Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Ann Tenner
When Silas pushed the door open, I quickly shut my laptop.

He frowned. "Why are you so flustered?"

I shook my head. "It's nothing."

Silas walked over and planted a light kiss on my forehead. "I'm going to take Cady home first. If there's anything we need to talk about, we'll talk when I get back."

Before I could even get a word in, he was already striding out of the bedroom.

By the time I chased out after him, he was already helping Cassidy out the front door.

So I went back to the room and started packing my things.

After five years together, I found that I couldn't even fill a single suitcase with my belongings. Most of the things in the house belonged to Silas, and they were mostly things I had bought for him. When it came to myself, I had been excessively thrifty.

I took the debit card for our joint account where we kept our wedding fund out of my wallet and set it on the nightstand. The account had been opened under Silas' name, so it was time to return it to its rightful owner.

I waited at home all evening, but Silas never returned. However, I figured some things needed to be said in person, so I texted him. "When are you coming back? I need to talk to you."

It took over ten minutes for him to reply. "Cady's foot is hurting badly and she can't walk, so I'll be staying the night to take care of her. Don't worry, I'll be sleeping on the couch."

A sudden chill settled over my heart, and I no longer felt like replying.

The next day, I went to my usual shift at the cafe. It was my last day on the job. Once my shift ended, I wrapped up my handover.

That was when my phone rang with a call from Silas' father, Patrick Culburn. Silas' parents had come to Elmsworth, but they couldn't reach him, so Patrick had called me instead.

"Whitney, Flora's sick. We're at Elmsworth General Hospital. Tell that rascal to get over here right away."

After ending the call, I tried calling Silas' phone, but it went unanswered. I tried calling Cassidy as well and got the same result. In the end, I took a cab straight to Cassidy's place.

I used the spare key to let myself in, only to find the living room empty. The only sounds came from the bathroom.

"Silas, can you be gentler? You're going to scratch my scalp raw!"

Silas' carefree laughter echoed through the house. "Got it. I'll try to be gentler."

"Are you doing this on purpose? Do you use this much force when you wash Whitney's hair too?"

"Whitney is nowhere as spoiled as you are. She can wash her own hair just fine."

Standing at the doorway, I felt my heart aching fiercely. Even the tips of my fingers trembled as I reached out to push the bathroom door open. "Silas, your parents are trying to reach you."

My sudden appearance made Silas freeze.

Cassidy, who was sitting on a stool, avoided my gaze.

"Just a minute. Let me rinse the shampoo out of Cady's hair first," Silas said, picking up the showerhead and rinsing out Cady's hair.

I walked out and sat on the couch after mumbling a quick, "Okay."

The bathroom fell silent, and I heard no more laughter or teasing coming from inside.

Five minutes later, Silas and Cassidy came out. He grabbed a hairdryer and began drying her hair first.

I just sat there quietly, waiting. It brought back memories of how things used to be between Silas and me.

Every time after I was done washing my hair, Silas would drop whatever he was doing, whether it was gaming or work, and blow-dry my hair for me without hesitation.

Eventually, I heard the news from Mom. She said Cassidy filed a police report, and Silas was detained for 15 days on assault charges. After he was released, he lost his job and had to start over. But Cassidy clung to him like a ghost, following him everywhere. In the end, Silas had no choice but to sublet the house and leave Elmsworth altogether. As for where he went, no one knew, because he was afraid that if he divulged anything, Cassidy would track him down again.Cassidy, with no one left to support her, still refused to find a job. Her parents, drowning in debt, hastily found someone and married her off.Mom couldn't stop laughing when she told me this. "Talk about karma! You made the right call to leave them when you did, Whitney!"I just smiled and said nothing.…One day, I received a message from Silas. "I'm coming to meet you."He actually showed up outside my office building that afternoon. Looking at him, he must have traveled a long way. His hair was a mess, he had

Cassidy's voice shot up instantly. "You don't have any money? How could you not? Your family's rich! Just ask your parents for some! Your mom likes me well enough anyway.""I'm saving my money up for my wedding with Whitney!" Silas exclaimed. "I can't give you any more!"Cassidy laughed like she'd heard the funniest joke. "Are you kidding me? Whitney doesn't even want you anymore! Who are you marrying? A ghost?"Silas' expression darkened even more. "Cassidy, watch your mouth! My business with Whitney is none of your concern."Cassidy raised her voice right back. "I want no part in your mess at all! I just want the money! You promised to be my knight! You can't go back on your word!"Silas rubbed his temples, frustrated. "Cassidy, why can't you learn from Whitney and stand on your own two feet?"Cassidy stared at him in disbelief. "Since when does a princess need to earn money? Isn't that your job? You promised Whitney you'd take care of me! If it weren't for you, Whitney wouldn'

Ever since I left, Silas felt like the entire house was empty. It was only just a few pieces of clothing missing, but somehow the place felt hollow and desolate. The flowers in the living room vase had been wilted for days. In the past, I would replace them with fresh ones every other day.Silas sat on the couch, staring out at the balcony. At this time of day, I would usually be sitting there quietly reading.Regret burned in his eyes. He had asked every friend he knew, but no one had any idea where I was. He missed me so much it was driving him crazy. But I'd vanished without a trace, as if I'd never existed. He'd sent me countless messages and made countless calls from new numbers, but I never answered any of them.At first, he thought that I had left because I was just throwing a tantrum, and that I would cool off after a few days. He believed that after five years together, it would be impossible for me to just walk away so easily. But I had truly left.Just then, the doorbe

I suddenly found it a little funny. Silas had mentioned "the three of us". That meant he still included Cassidy in his plans."No, Silas," I said. "You can go ahead and keep being her knight. I'm done chasing after you."Silas was silent for a while before slowly speaking. "Are you still angry? Because I took care of Cassidy? I'm only doing it because she twisted her ankle. There's really nothing else to it. Whitney, Cady is your best friend. Can't you be a little more considerate?""Silas, won't you try to understand where I'm coming from, then?" I asked softly. "I don't want to be caught between the two of you. Love and marriage are matters between two people, not three. Anyway, just transfer me my money, and we'll call it even."His breathing grew heavier. "Whitney, you even left the card behind. Are you really abandoning me too? We've been together for five years! You can't break up with me just because I prioritized Cassidy over you this one time—""It's not just this one tim

I turned off my phone once I boarded the plane. Outside the window, the sky was pitch black. I put on my headphones, played some music, and slowly drifted off to sleep. After landing, I turned my phone back on to find over 20 missed calls and messages, all from an unknown number."Whitney, what do you mean by this? Who said anything about breaking up? I'm not breaking up with you!"I'll deposit the 6,000 dollars back into our wedding fund. Don't worry about it."I still need to take care of Cady tonight. I'll come back tomorrow and explain everything."I didn't send him a single reply. It was already the early hours of the next morning when I arrived in Briarwood. The dry air stung my face.I dragged my suitcase out of the airport and, following the navigation, took a cab to the area near my new workplace. Then, I left my luggage at the front desk of the company and started looking for housing nearby. As it was graduation season, vacancies were scarce. I looked at several pl

I had even recorded a video of Silas drying my hair for me and posted it on my social media to show off how much he cared about me.Cassidy had left a comment on that post. "Come on, he's just putting on an act. You could spend 20-odd bucks at a salon, and it'd even come with a head massage!"I'd laughed and replied, "He's my personal hairstylist. No one else compares."But now, his attention was no longer reserved for me alone."My parents are in Elmsworth?" Silas' voice pulled me back to the present."Flora's sick," I said. "She's at Elmsworth General Hospital. Patrick called you, but he couldn't reach you."Silas' expression instantly turned tense. He checked his phone and saw several missed calls. "I must have missed it because I was helping Cady wash her hair. Come on, let's go to the hospital now."He reached out to take my hand, but I stepped aside and avoided him. His hand froze in midair before he awkwardly pulled it back. "You're always getting upset over nothing," h
