Chapter 2

작가: Saucy
“A little won’t kill you. We have a family doctor.”

I stared at the shrimp ball for two seconds, then picked it up and ate it.

A few minutes later, my neck started to itch.

Red hives spread across my skin.

Chloe let out a startled little cry, then tears started spilling down her face.

“I didn’t know she was really allergic... I thought she just didn’t like me...”

Mrs. Bennett immediately pulled her into her arms and patted her back, soothing her. Then she turned and glared at me.

“Hey you—if it was a real allergy, why didn’t you say so earlier? Were you trying to make Chloe cry?”

I touched the rash on my neck and answered softly,

“I did say so. You just didn’t believe me.”

Then I stood up. Without looking at anyone else, I turned and went back to my room.

The door had barely been shut for thirty seconds before Ethan pushed it open and came in after me. His face was cold as ice, and when he spoke, he kept his voice low.

“Watch what you say. Don’t mention a single word about what happened between us.

“We were just chatting online to pass the time. You know that. Chloe is the only one fit to be my wife.”

I looked up at him.

No tears. No argument. Not a trace of extra emotion on my face.

“Ethan, we’re done.”

He froze.

I didn’t bother saying anything else. I turned and shut the door.

I found my allergy pills and swallowed one with cold water.

The fine, prickling itch at my neck slowly started to ease.

Then I sat down at my desk and opened my laptop.

My WhatsApp icon was flashing nonstop.

It was from Summer Shaw.

Her profile picture was an orange tabby with a spicy snack stick in its mouth, and I’d saved her under Emergency Contact.

She was my only close friend—and my agent. She handled all my copyrights, schedules, everything.

Messages kept popping up one after another:

[Oh holy one!! Submissions are now open for the Aurora Prize, a key Nobel bellwether! Did you finish Darkwater yet? Ready for another gold award?]

I replied:

[Winning the same prize once was enough.]

[Darkwater is for the Nobel.]

I had barely sent it when someone knocked twice and pushed open my door.

Chloe walked in holding a plate of mango crepes. Her eyes were still red.

“Sorry about what just happened, Nina. I made dessert for you to apologize.”

Then her gaze swept across my laptop screen—and she froze.

I only had two people on my WhatsApp friends list.

One of them was Ethan.

His profile picture was still that mountain photo he’d used for six years.

Crash.

The plate hit the floor. Mango filling splattered everywhere.

Her voice shot up so sharply the whole floor could probably hear it.

“How come you have Ethan’s WhatsApp?

“If you really like Ethan, then I-I’ll step aside... but how could you—”

Footsteps thundered in from the hallway.

Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett, and Ethan all came at once.

Mr. Bennett charged in first, his face dark with fury. Without a word, he slapped me across the face.

Half my face went numb instantly. I tasted blood at the corner of my mouth.

“You shameless little thing! Trying to seduce your sister’s fiancé? You’ve humiliated this family enough!”

Ethan stood behind the others, anger blazing in his eyes.

He probably thought I’d exposed his contact on purpose to force his hand.

He took two steps forward and reached toward me. “Give me your phone.”

I didn’t move.

So he took it himself. His thumb found the fingerprint unlock spot with practiced ease.

Click.

The screen unlocked.

He went straight to my contacts, opened the chat under his mountain photo, deleted himself, and blocked the account.

The floating comments were flying so fast they were almost unreadable.

[Holy crap! Look how pale she is! She’s definitely about to expose the chat logs now, right?]

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and looked at every person in front of me, one by one.

My voice was quiet, but it didn’t shake.

“Anything else? If not, I’d like to rest.”

The comments stalled.

Chloe’s sobbing hitched. Even Mr. Bennett seemed to choke on whatever he’d been about to say.

Ethan stared at me for several long seconds. His expression was unreadable. His lips moved slightly, but in the end, he said nothing.

One by one, they all left.

The door shut.

The room was finally quiet.

I opened WhatsApp again.

Now there was only one person left on my friends list.

Summer.

I stared at the empty screen for a few seconds.

Back when I first met Ethan, the pen name I’d used for ten years had just been forcibly bought out by the platform. After that, I used Summer’s ID to register a new author account and started over from scratch.

“Ethan.”“Yeah.”“I’m never getting married.”“Yeah.”“And especially not to you.”He closed his hand around the ring and smiled a little. His eyes were damp, but he didn’t cry.“I figured.”Then he stepped back and cleared the way.“Go on. Be safe.”I walked past him, and my steps felt much lighter than I’d expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I lifted a hand to brush it away.By the time I was far down the street, I still hadn’t looked back. But I knew he was standing there. And I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind hit my face. The lights on the tower came on layer by layer. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll bring something.]I replied:[Anything’s fine.]The Paris night wind slipped down the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The tip of the tower gleamed against the dark blue sky like a fallen star.Leaning against the railing, I t

Summer and Ivy were seated one row behind me, gripping each other’s hands so tightly they looked even more nervous than I was.Onstage, the presenter said a long string of words in Swedish.I didn’t understand most of it.But I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my gown brushed against the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were slick with sweat. The walk to the stage felt endless. The camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room quieted.Hundreds of eyes were on me.My social anxiety had never really gone away.My heart was pounding so hard it made my chest ache. But I spoke anyway.“This book is called Darkwater.”My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor.“It means a river flowing quietly underground. You can’t see it, but it never stops moving.”The hall stayed silent.“When I wrote it, I had no family and no one beside me. Just a computer.”No one moved.“I want to say this to everyon

The official Nobel Prize in Literature longlist had been released.Darkwater was on it.I stared at the English text on the screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the soft rustle of turning pages and the low hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside, Paris was blanketed in gray. The clouds hung heavy, but light still managed to break through.I thought of that dawn three years ago.The kitchen in my rental apartment had been leaking, dripping all night long. I’d been huddled in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the words Chapter One one character at a time.Ethan had messaged me on Whatsapp and told me he wanted to be the first person to read it when it was done. The corner of my mouth lifted.I didn’t let myself cry.My phone buzzed.Summer had sent over twenty screaming emojis, with one message buried in the middle:[DO YOU FREAKING SEE THIS]I replied:[Yeah.]She immediately called. “Nina, I—”“Go home.”I stepped around him and headed for the building entrance. As I passed him, I paused for a second.“Ethan, you never loved me. You loved Midnight Lantern—the version of me on the other side of a screen, the one who could make you laugh. The one who built you dreams at a keyboard.“You couldn’t even be bothered to really see what I was like in real life.”I didn’t wait for his answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door shut behind me, I heard a quiet “I’m sorry” from outside.I went upstairs and looked out the window once.Ethan was still standing under that plane tree, head lowered, shoulders slightly slumped.I pulled the curtains closed.7He came back the next day. This time with a bouquet of red roses, left on the ground outside the building.I saw them when I went downstairs.I walked right past.On the third day, it was white roses, with a card that said "I’m sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it in half, then folded it again and

“They let her steal for five years without catching it? The web fiction world must be blind.”“She once got asked in an interview who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and couldn’t answer. I should’ve known.”“I feel so bad for Midnight Lantern. Her work got stolen and she got hit on top of it.”Summer sent another message.[Every single one of Chloe’s partners has terminated their contracts. The penalties alone add up to over eleven million dollars. She can’t pay it.]Then Ivy sent a voice note in the group chat.“Her platform is suing her for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit too. Conservatively? Add another million. The pre-sold screen rights on those earlier books of hers are dead. Investors want their money back.”6I replied with a simple [Mm.]Summer wrote back:[You’re not happy?]I replied:[I am. 5I stood in front of the airport’s floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the patch of sky where my plane had just disappeared. My phone buzzed in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time.Ethan’s name glowed on the screen.I powered it off.Overhead, announcements alternated between French and English as I moved with the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was cooler than back home, carrying the mixed scent of fresh bread and coffee.I flagged down a cab and, in halting English, gave the driver the name of the hotel near the school. He was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked, in thickly accented English, whether I was here to study.I said yes.He smiled and said, “Bienvenue.”Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched streets and buildings I’d never seen before slide past me like scenes from a foreign film. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was completely quiet. No one was looking for me.I turned over and slept
