The second Ethan saw me, something in his eyes flickered—panic, brief but unmistakable.

He buried it almost instantly. A polite, distant smile appeared on his face as he extended his hand.

“Hello, Miss Bennett. I’m Chloe Bennett’s fiancé, Ethan Pierce.”

Then he stepped to the side, lifted a hand, and gently ruffled Chloe’s hair. His voice was warm, steady, and decisive.

“Don’t say things like that, Chloe. This engagement was always between you and me. The only woman I’ll ever marry is you.”

The floating comments exploded.

[Here we go! The evil side character’s about to whip out the chat logs and lose it!]

[I bet fifty cents she starts crying in three seconds.]

I clenched the hem of my shirt, my fingertips icy cold.

I forced a faint smile at Ethan. My voice was soft, but steady.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Pierce.”

The comments froze for a beat.

[...That’s it? She’s not making a scene?]

[She’s pretending. Just wait. The real move’s coming later. Classic playing hard to get.]

Ethan looked thrown too. He glanced at me, his gaze edged with warning and suspicion.

Chloe tilted her head. Her eyes were still red, and her voice came out gentle and innocent.

“So, Nina... you really don’t want the engagement?”

My eyes dropped to the cufflink at Ethan’s wrist.

I’d given it to him for our third anniversary.

He put it on with a smile and told me he’d wear it to every important occasion from then on.

I looked away, my tone even.

“I don’t.”

The comments started flying again.

[What an act. Keep acting. She’s definitely going to corner him in private and cry.]

Mrs. Bennett hurried to smooth things over. She rose from her seat with a bright, practiced smile and came over to take my arm.

“All right, all right, let’s not stand around. Dinner first.”

At the table, Mrs. Bennett placed a piece of golden fried chicken onto Chloe’s plate, then turned to me with a smile.

“Nina, you said you have a boyfriend, right? What does he do? Bring him by sometime so your father and I can meet him.”

Every eye at the table landed on me.

Ethan’s fingers tightened around his fork hard enough that his knuckles turned white. His expression had gone tense.

I glanced at him once, then lowered my eyes and picked up some food.

“We met online. But we’re probably breaking up.”

The comments instantly went wild.

[See?! There it is—the passive-aggressive routine starts now.]

[Watch. Next step, she pulls up the chat history and plays the victim.]

Mrs. Bennett paused. “Why break up out of nowhere?”

I chewed my vegetables, swallowed, and answered quietly.

“Because he got engaged to someone else.”

The room went so still one could hear forks tapping plates.

Chloe reacted fast. She immediately placed a shrimp ball onto my plate and smiled sweetly.

“Don’t be sad, Nina. Try this. It’s my favorite.”

Ethan’s hand lifted, like he was about to stop her, but he pulled it back at the last second.

I looked at the round shrimp ball on my plate and frowned.

“I’m allergic to shrimp.”

Chloe’s face went pale at once. Her eyes filled immediately.

“Do you... hate me that much, Nina?”

Mrs. Bennett’s expression darkened too. “Your sister is offering you food for the first time. Don’t ruin the moment.”

Mr. Bennett set down his fork and knife, annoyance plain in his voice.

“How serious can an allergy be? If you eat a little at a time, you’ll get used to it. Eat it. Don’t embarrass Chloe.”

Everyone at the table looked at me coldly.

As if I were the difficult one.

Ethan raised his eyes to me, his voice low and pressuring.

“Ethan.”“Yeah.”“I’m never getting married.”“Yeah.”“And especially not to you.”He closed his hand around the ring and smiled a little. His eyes were damp, but he didn’t cry.“I figured.”Then he stepped back and cleared the way.“Go on. Be safe.”I walked past him, and my steps felt much lighter than I’d expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I lifted a hand to brush it away.By the time I was far down the street, I still hadn’t looked back. But I knew he was standing there. And I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind hit my face. The lights on the tower came on layer by layer. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll bring something.]I replied:[Anything’s fine.]The Paris night wind slipped down the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The tip of the tower gleamed against the dark blue sky like a fallen star.Leaning against the railing, I t

Summer and Ivy were seated one row behind me, gripping each other’s hands so tightly they looked even more nervous than I was.Onstage, the presenter said a long string of words in Swedish.I didn’t understand most of it.But I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my gown brushed against the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were slick with sweat. The walk to the stage felt endless. The camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room quieted.Hundreds of eyes were on me.My social anxiety had never really gone away.My heart was pounding so hard it made my chest ache. But I spoke anyway.“This book is called Darkwater.”My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor.“It means a river flowing quietly underground. You can’t see it, but it never stops moving.”The hall stayed silent.“When I wrote it, I had no family and no one beside me. Just a computer.”No one moved.“I want to say this to everyon

The official Nobel Prize in Literature longlist had been released.Darkwater was on it.I stared at the English text on the screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the soft rustle of turning pages and the low hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside, Paris was blanketed in gray. The clouds hung heavy, but light still managed to break through.I thought of that dawn three years ago.The kitchen in my rental apartment had been leaking, dripping all night long. I’d been huddled in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the words Chapter One one character at a time.Ethan had messaged me on Whatsapp and told me he wanted to be the first person to read it when it was done. The corner of my mouth lifted.I didn’t let myself cry.My phone buzzed.Summer had sent over twenty screaming emojis, with one message buried in the middle:[DO YOU FREAKING SEE THIS]I replied:[Yeah.]She immediately called. The sec

“Nina, I—”“Go home.”I stepped around him and headed for the building entrance. As I passed him, I paused for a second.“Ethan, you never loved me. You loved Midnight Lantern—the version of me on the other side of a screen, the one who could make you laugh. The one who built you dreams at a keyboard.“You couldn’t even be bothered to really see what I was like in real life.”I didn’t wait for his answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door shut behind me, I heard a quiet “I’m sorry” from outside.I went upstairs and looked out the window once.Ethan was still standing under that plane tree, head lowered, shoulders slightly slumped.I pulled the curtains closed.7He came back the next day. This time with a bouquet of red roses, left on the ground outside the building.I saw them when I went downstairs.I walked right past.On the third day, it was white roses, with a card that said "I’m sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it in half, then folded it again and

“They let her steal for five years without catching it? The web fiction world must be blind.”“She once got asked in an interview who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and couldn’t answer. I should’ve known.”“I feel so bad for Midnight Lantern. Her work got stolen and she got hit on top of it.”Summer sent another message.[Every single one of Chloe’s partners has terminated their contracts. The penalties alone add up to over eleven million dollars. She can’t pay it.]Then Ivy sent a voice note in the group chat.“Her platform is suing her for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit too. Conservatively? Add another million. The pre-sold screen rights on those earlier books of hers are dead. Investors want their money back.”6I replied with a simple [Mm.]Summer wrote back:[You’re not happy?]I replied:[I am. Just not as happy as I thought I’d be.]She sent a question mark.I thought for a moment, then added:[Maybe because there’s nothing left in me for

5I stood in front of the airport’s floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the patch of sky where my plane had just disappeared. My phone buzzed in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time.Ethan’s name glowed on the screen.I powered it off.Overhead, announcements alternated between French and English as I moved with the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was cooler than back home, carrying the mixed scent of fresh bread and coffee.I flagged down a cab and, in halting English, gave the driver the name of the hotel near the school. He was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked, in thickly accented English, whether I was here to study.I said yes.He smiled and said, “Bienvenue.”Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched streets and buildings I’d never seen before slide past me like scenes from a foreign film. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was completely quiet. No one was looking for me.I turned over and slept
