Chapter 3

작가: Saucy
Every day, I got thousands of private messages through the backend. Most of them I couldn’t be bothered to read.

Ethan’s was different.

He wrote: “Your style sounds exactly like Midnight Lantern.”

What he didn’t know was that I was Midnight Lantern.

Later, he told me he was the CEO of Starlight Media. He complained that Midnight Lantern’s adaptation fees were outrageously expensive, then asked whether the film and TV rights to the novel on my author page were available.

That was how we ended up adding each other on WhatsApp.

Online, I was nothing like I was in person.

Behind a screen, I was bold, fast-talking, and impossible to stump. I could volley jokes, memes, and sarcasm all day long. Ethan used to say that after a long day at work, talking to me for a few minutes was enough to help him unwind.

And I liked the version of myself I could be with him.

Later, he bought the rights to one of my short stories and invited me to help adapt it for the screen.

That was the first time we met in person.

He stared at my bright red ears and laughed for what felt like forever.

“How come you look like a completely different person offline? You’re so shy you can barely raise your voice. But... it’s kind of cute.”

I’d been socially anxious since I was a kid. He was the only person I could be around without feeling drained.

On my twenty-seventh birthday, he confessed he had feelings for me.

When I said yes, Summer immediately threw cold water on the whole thing.

“A family like the Pierces? Their future daughter-in-law has to be polished, charming, good with everyone. You’re the kind of person who won’t even open the door for a delivery driver. You really think you can handle that?”

I didn’t believe her.

I signed up for confidence classes. I forced myself to go to small book signings. I stood in front of a mirror and practiced toasts hundreds of times.

I broke myself apart and rebuilt myself piece by piece, all so I could squeeze my way into his world.

And then he turned around and took someone else’s hand.

Chloe’s laughter drifted in from outside the window.

I glanced over.

Ethan had obviously managed to cheer her up. He was rubbing the top of her head as he walked her toward the garage, probably taking her out shopping.

I looked away and opened my email box.

An admissions application to the Ovest Institute of Letters had been sitting in my draft folder for six months.

I hit Send.

The floating comments appeared again.

[What is she typing now? Why is that all in French?]

[She’s definitely plotting something. No way she’s given up.]

I couldn’t care less about the comments and their wild guesses.

I closed my email and opened the document for Darkwater.

Three chapters left.

My fingers settled on the keyboard, and I started typing.

Two days before the family recognition banquet, Chloe knocked on my door.

She handed me a dress covered in rhinestones and sequins, bright pink to the point of being blinding.

The fabric was expensive—good quality, no question.

But it was nothing like the understated clothes I usually wore. On me, it would look awkward and wrong.

I didn’t take it.

“I already have a dress.”

I’d said before that I didn’t want a banquet at all. They insisted on holding one anyway.

Chloe’s eyes reddened on cue.

“Don’t you like it, Nina? I just wanted everyone to see how much the family cares about you.”

From the sofa, Mr. Bennett threw down the magazine in his hand.

“Chloe skipped the Aurora Prize prep seminar just to pick out a dress for you. Whether you like it or not, you’re wearing it. It’s from her heart.”

I glanced at Chloe.

She wrote web novels too, and she had a big following.

But I’d skimmed a few of her books before. They were mediocre at best—nothing that matched the level of hype around her.

Then at some point, the quality of her work had suddenly improved. But the writing style had changed several times too, so much that it felt like different people had written them.

I said nothing.

I took the dress and nodded.

Then I turned around and sent Summer a message:

[Get me a dress for the banquet.]

The day of the banquet, I crouched near the entrance of the hotel, one hand pressed to my stomach, my face pale.

“My stomach hurts. You guys go in first. I just need a minute.”

Mr. Bennett muttered, “Always something with you,” and went inside with Mrs. Bennett, Chloe, and Ethan.

The second they were gone, I straightened up.

The dress Summer had sent that morning was already waiting in the car.

A silk gown in smoky gray.

A one-of-a-kind couture piece once worn on the Cannes red carpet by award-winning actress Ivy Lindsay. Silver-thread night-blooming flowers were embroidered along the waist. It was from Ivy’s private collection—something money alone couldn’t buy.

I changed and walked into the ballroom.

The entire room fell silent, as if someone had cut the sound.

Ethan was standing beside the head table. His champagne glass froze halfway to his lips.

Chloe’s fingers tightened around her own glass until her knuckles turned white.

Someone nearby recognized the gown and whispered in amazement,

“Isn’t that the custom piece Ivy Lindsay wore on the red carpet? It was a limited one-off. You couldn’t buy that even if you tried.”

“Ethan.”“Yeah.”“I’m never getting married.”“Yeah.”“And especially not to you.”He closed his hand around the ring and smiled a little. His eyes were damp, but he didn’t cry.“I figured.”Then he stepped back and cleared the way.“Go on. Be safe.”I walked past him, and my steps felt much lighter than I’d expected. The wind blew my hair across my face, and I lifted a hand to brush it away.By the time I was far down the street, I still hadn’t looked back. But I knew he was standing there. And I never heard footsteps following me.Back at my apartment, I stood on the balcony and let the wind hit my face. The lights on the tower came on layer by layer. My phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.[What do you want to eat tomorrow? I’ll bring something.]I replied:[Anything’s fine.]The Paris night wind slipped down the collar of my coat, and I pulled it tighter around myself. The tip of the tower gleamed against the dark blue sky like a fallen star.Leaning against the railing, I t

Summer and Ivy were seated one row behind me, gripping each other’s hands so tightly they looked even more nervous than I was.Onstage, the presenter said a long string of words in Swedish.I didn’t understand most of it.But I heard my name. When I stood, the hem of my gown brushed against the chair. I took a deep breath. My palms were slick with sweat. The walk to the stage felt endless. The camera flashes were so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.I stopped in front of the microphone. The room quieted.Hundreds of eyes were on me.My social anxiety had never really gone away.My heart was pounding so hard it made my chest ache. But I spoke anyway.“This book is called Darkwater.”My voice carried through the microphone with the slightest tremor.“It means a river flowing quietly underground. You can’t see it, but it never stops moving.”The hall stayed silent.“When I wrote it, I had no family and no one beside me. Just a computer.”No one moved.“I want to say this to everyon

The official Nobel Prize in Literature longlist had been released.Darkwater was on it.I stared at the English text on the screen for a long time. The library was quiet, filled only with the soft rustle of turning pages and the low hum of a copier somewhere in the distance.I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside, Paris was blanketed in gray. The clouds hung heavy, but light still managed to break through.I thought of that dawn three years ago.The kitchen in my rental apartment had been leaking, dripping all night long. I’d been huddled in a chair in my winter coat, typing out the words Chapter One one character at a time.Ethan had messaged me on Whatsapp and told me he wanted to be the first person to read it when it was done. The corner of my mouth lifted.I didn’t let myself cry.My phone buzzed.Summer had sent over twenty screaming emojis, with one message buried in the middle:[DO YOU FREAKING SEE THIS]I replied:[Yeah.]She immediately called. “Nina, I—”“Go home.”I stepped around him and headed for the building entrance. As I passed him, I paused for a second.“Ethan, you never loved me. You loved Midnight Lantern—the version of me on the other side of a screen, the one who could make you laugh. The one who built you dreams at a keyboard.“You couldn’t even be bothered to really see what I was like in real life.”I didn’t wait for his answer. I swiped my key card and went inside. As the door shut behind me, I heard a quiet “I’m sorry” from outside.I went upstairs and looked out the window once.Ethan was still standing under that plane tree, head lowered, shoulders slightly slumped.I pulled the curtains closed.7He came back the next day. This time with a bouquet of red roses, left on the ground outside the building.I saw them when I went downstairs.I walked right past.On the third day, it was white roses, with a card that said "I’m sorry."I bent down, picked up the card, folded it in half, then folded it again and

“They let her steal for five years without catching it? The web fiction world must be blind.”“She once got asked in an interview who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and couldn’t answer. I should’ve known.”“I feel so bad for Midnight Lantern. Her work got stolen and she got hit on top of it.”Summer sent another message.[Every single one of Chloe’s partners has terminated their contracts. The penalties alone add up to over eleven million dollars. She can’t pay it.]Then Ivy sent a voice note in the group chat.“Her platform is suing her for fraud, and several production companies have filed a joint lawsuit too. Conservatively? Add another million. The pre-sold screen rights on those earlier books of hers are dead. Investors want their money back.”6I replied with a simple [Mm.]Summer wrote back:[You’re not happy?]I replied:[I am. 5I stood in front of the airport’s floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the patch of sky where my plane had just disappeared. My phone buzzed in my pocket for the thirty-fourth time.Ethan’s name glowed on the screen.I powered it off.Overhead, announcements alternated between French and English as I moved with the crowd toward the exit. The air in Paris was cooler than back home, carrying the mixed scent of fresh bread and coffee.I flagged down a cab and, in halting English, gave the driver the name of the hotel near the school. He was a heavyset middle-aged man who asked, in thickly accented English, whether I was here to study.I said yes.He smiled and said, “Bienvenue.”Welcome.I leaned against the window and watched streets and buildings I’d never seen before slide past me like scenes from a foreign film. After checking into the hotel, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.My phone was completely quiet. No one was looking for me.I turned over and slept
