Sneaking Around

I must have fallen asleep on Caleb, because the next thing I knew, he was jostling me awake. I blinked blearily at him, then made a sound of protest when he scooped me off of his lap and onto the chair next to him. “Caleb!”

Caleb pointed out the window, and, sure enough, my father’s Suburban was pulling up. I quickly put another prudent chair between us before my father and Jeanie walked into the main building.

My father zeroed in on Caleb automatically. “I ought to take my belt to you, boy.”

“I’d like to see you try,” Caleb shot back.

And just like that, things were back to normal. Caleb and my father staring each other down, and Jeanie putting her hand on my father&rsq
