Chapter 2

Baba De Luna
"I can make way for Iris, but can I at least have some time to move out?"

Charles clearly hadn't expected me to relent so easily, so he took a while to process what I'd said. However, thinking that I was on death's door and that I was no threat to him, he nodded nonchalantly. "And take those rags out with you! It's going to take up space and delay me from stocking up on ice!"

Following the direction he pointed, I saw the bedding set, a gift from my mother when I got married, tossed haphazardly on the floor.

My parents had been divorced since I was young, and I grew up with my mother. Not long after I got married, however, she passed away from illness.

Even without Charles saying it, there was no way I was leaving something this precious to them! Besides, they'd know how important any bit of warmth was during the ice age.

"These quilts and thick clothes take up too much space! Throw them all away!"

After barking out those orders, Charles rushed out the front door, making a beeline for the supermarket. Meanwhile, Kate curled her lip mockingly. "If I got cancer, I'd just find a place to shrivel up and die instead of dragging others down!"

I scoffed inwardly. Would she be able to keep her word once she knew the truth?

And so, I brought all the thick clothes from the house with me. I packed Charles' and his parents' clothes and threw them straight into a used-clothing donation bin, while I had a delivery service move my belongings to a six-story self-built house on the outskirts of town.

That house was left by my maternal grandparents, and it was located on high ground. Before my mother passed away, she told me not to tell my husband about it, saying that if anything ever happened, that house would be my way out.

At that moment, I felt deeply grateful for my mother's foresight.

After that, I went to the bank and reported my bank card lost, so that Charles couldn't touch a single cent of my money. Later, I went to the hospital and did another round of tests, and sure enough, there had been a mistake.

Now, I was completely convinced by what the comments had revealed to me.

Placing Kate's diagnosis at the entrance of their house, I headed straight to the mall, but I received a call from Charles on the way there.

The moment I picked up, his furious voice came through, "Jennie, why can't I use your card?!"

I acted surprised, gasping softly, "I have no idea! Maybe the card's broken?"

He roared angrily, "What am I supposed to do now? I just bought 200,000 dollars' worth of supplies!"

I thought for a moment, then replied, "Doesn't Mom have that amount in her account? Go take it from her, and I'll transfer the amount back to her after I fix things at the bank."

With a cold huff, Charles hung up.

With my newly issued bank card, I went to a large supermarket and purchased all kinds of supplies—rice, flour, grains, oil, seasonings, bottled water, military rations, freeze-dried vegetables…

Tissues, sanitary pads, shampoo, skincare products, and other daily necessities, plus power banks, thermal blankets, heat packs, and down jackets...

Essential medicine, vitamins, candles, and generators were also must-haves.

According to the comments, the ice age would last about a year and a half, and what I'd stocked was enough to last me three whole years.

It took five full truckloads to transport everything.

After returning home, I checked in on the Dennings through the surveillance footage. The cameras had been installed not long ago, a last-ditch effort from me to show Charles how his parents treated me. I installed those hidden cameras in the living room, and the family had no idea. I didn't expect them to come in handy now.

Through the footage, I saw Charles directing people to move five refrigerators and five cooling units into the house. Then, he hired workers to build his ice house, with ice blocks, cold drinks and ice cream fully stocked, and more supplies being carried in non-stop.

Cramming all that into a 650-square-foot apartment really was quite the feat.

Charles sent me a video call request, and after some thought, I accepted. The moment the call connected, his frantic voice came through, "Jennie, look! I've killed Dad and Mom! They're the ones who came between us, spoke badly about you, and mistreated you while I wasn't around, so I've taken revenge for you!"Won't you forgive me and give me something to eat, Jennie?"Seeing him try and claim credit, a wave of disgust rose in my chest. How could I trust someone who could kill his own parents? All this time, he knew that his parents were tormenting me, yet he acted like he didn't know, staying conveniently silent. What a frighteningly selfish man.Not hearing a response from me, Charles started to play the emotional card, bursting into tears in front of the camera. "Please, Jennie, save me! I'm starving, freezing, and I'm about to die! I know I was wrong, I really do… If you save me, I'll treat you right from now on!"I swear I'll love you for the rest of my life. Don't you reme

I couldn't even begin to imagine how miserable my fate would have been, had I not found out about the future from the commenters. After all, I never thought that the man I was married to would be so cruel to me.I shook away the thoughts in my head, looking over to the rows filled with goods and supplies that filled me with peace. In this ice age, food was more important than anything else. After eating, I took a nice, long nap. When I woke up, I stretched lazily before the comments appeared in my vision again:[Whoa, talk about bloody! There's nothing scarier than human nature in the apocalypse!][Yeah, it really magnifies the darkness of humanity…][To think he could even do that to his own parents… what an animal!][What a selfish scum! He could do anything for a mouthful of food!]I turned on the surveillance and saw Charles and his parents fighting each other, bloodied and bruised, all over a single pack of instant noodles."You old hag! Why are you fighting me for this f

Charles blurted out in shock, "What? But didn't you get breast cancer?"I ate a mouthful of lettuce wrap, allowing the aroma to fill my mouth, and swallowing before I replied slowly, "Oh, the hospital made a mistake. I should've placed the correct diagnosis somewhere at the entrance, so go and take a look."Through the monitor, I saw Charles stumble his way to the entrance and find the diagnosis, his face filled with disbelief.Kate couldn't hold her temper. "Son, what's going on? Is that woman coming back or not?"Then, as if she thought of something, her expression became vicious. "Hmph, if she doesn't come back, she can die outside! No one would be there to collect her body anyway since her parents are dead. Besides, since she's gotten a dirty illness like that, she can die for all we care!"And so, Kate continued cursing, her vocabulary as colorful as the rainbow, yet she didn't notice Charles' strange expression.Arthur was the one who realized something was wrong, and he im

When I woke up the next day, the temperature had already dropped to -4°F. I quickly turned on the heating equipment and took out my phone to check the surveillance on Charles' house, as the entire house grew warm and cozy.Because of their ice house and cooling machines, the temperature there was bound to be even lower."It's so cold! Charles, take out the blankets!" Iris shivered, her teeth chattering. However, Charles was stubborn. "What are you afraid of? The temperature's going up soon!"Kate couldn't hold it anymore either, her voice trembling. "It's too cold, Charles… Go out and buy some blankets!"Charles didn't pay her any heed, continuing to loudly insist that the weather was going to become warm again, even if his face was already becoming bluish-purple from the cold. After stubbornly holding on for another day, Arthur was the one who couldn't take it first. He rushed outdoors, planning on buying a few blankets, only for the streets to be devoid of any activity, the sho

I hired people to reinforce the doors and windows of the building, replaced all the glass with bulletproof glass, and installed a fireplace and underfloor heating…The workers were clearly perplexed by my decision to install all this in such hot weather, but since I was paying enough, they didn't ask further. As for the ice age, I didn't widely publicize it or tell anyone. Putting aside whether people would believe it in the first place, even if they did, it might lead to complications further down the line.In a calamity, the most terrifying thing was human nature. I was only one person, and I could do nothing more than ensure my own survival. It only took one week for me to prepare everything, and I finally felt relieved. According to the comments, only seven days were left before the ice age, meaning that the heatwave was right on the horizon. As expected, the very next day, the temperature kept rising from 85°F, to 95°F, to 105°F, to 115°F...I stayed in my room the whole tim
