LOGINEmily’s POV
Ever since my twin sister lost consciousness, a part of me had lost consciousness too. I was like a dissected laboratory specimen waiting to be discarded.
I had taken a few days off in my work place and the board understood my predicament even they sympathized with me, and sent their condolences and cards. This was more than a trying moment for me, and I felt more pained as the days passed by.
How would I surge on without Imelda, my twiny, my soul sister, who often told me , we would die the same day since we shared the same umbilical cord.
It was as if I was mourning and each time such thought got registered in my sub consciousness I waved it off and rebuked it, only for it to recur.
“Imelda, you have to wake up. You can’t remain like this,”
Those words had gone a long way to petrify me and reshape my fear into optimism. I didn’t get tired dropping cards and flower at her bedside, also raising in prayers.
Holding her cold fingers and squeezing them a little just to see if she could blink an eye lash. I relived memoires each time I saw some of her video recordings which covered past tournaments she had won. Her smiles had remained in my head and the promises she made to me had replayed several times in my mind.
Oh ill fate! Why now! To what end would this be? What should I expect?
“My superstar, please, wake up. You have a wedding to plan in one week,” I often said with her pictures in my hands, before going to bed, and these days past I had made it a routine to pass the night in her ward.
I had dreamed of her; how we strolled down the field with her kit. The wonderful emotional moments we lifted the trophies; the awards she had gathered and ambassadorial endorsements her fame had attracted. She had written her name in the sand of time.
But each time I woke up reality dawned on me that Imelda Peterson was still helplessly lying in a coma in the hospital, I was broken.
Indeed things had fallen apart and my center couldn’t hold.
When I finally resumed work, I couldn’t count how many times I mentioned Imelda, when I was supposed to mention a staff’s name.
The board had noticed this emotional pitfall and wrote me immediately to take some more days off until my mind got healed.
But would my mind ever get healed? My twin sister was still in a coma and she had my heart with her.
If they had asked me, I would have loved to resign and dedicate the remaining declining days of my life to Imelda. Yes, I was ready to do even more for my twin sister.
In the heat of all this, I never knew the twist of fate that was about to befall me.
Mom had visited the Wales’ palace, leaving me at the brick of anxiety and uncertainty. They left very early and return late.
As I perched at the window, watching them alight from the car and trudge toward our house I was locked into the shades of unimaginable thoughts about Imelda’s wedding with Prince Reuben.
I knew the queen had nullified the wedding. It was obvious this was the most highlighted decisions she was going to take.
Prince Reuben was her only son and child and the ill fate that befell Imelda had shut the door to royalty being traced to my family. It was obvious the queen had briefed them about the Wales royalty calling it a quit.
Uncle Charles was blue in the face, his grey mustache had lost its glory in just a short while of getting the news from the queen, I thought.
My mom’s hair was still scraggly tied into an empty ponytail that assumed how empty her heart was for Imelda
“How did it go?” I asked once they got in looking stolen and exhausted, “Uncle Charles? Mom? Have they finally nullified the wedding?”
My curiosity kept nudging me to ask more questions that may not yield prompt answer.
Mom slumped in the chair and snorted before gazing at me.
Uncle Charles was already at the shelf, a tequila handy, as he poured shots into the mug for a gulp.
Usually whenever mom hesitated to give me a reply concerning anything, I knew it was a lost cause; I waited at bated breath for either of them to give me a reply.
Uncle Charles kept taking gulps upon gulps of tequila as if he was forcefully getting himself drunk to forget what the queen had told them.
“Uncle,” I called emphatically, sat up and narrowed my throbbing brow at them, “Can someone please talk to me. What is the queen’s decision concerning my twin sister’s wedding with the prince?”
Seeing that my tone was almost becoming a mewl, mom grinned and said , “On the contrary they are still interested in the wedding.
Once I heard that I didn’t know whether to chortle or to squall. My face didn’t lose its luster because if indeed they were still interested in the wedding it certainly meant Prince Reuben would marry Imelda in her comatose stage.
“What do you mean, mom?” I queried and perceived a contrary approach even though I wasn’t good at guessing. “Will the wedding still hold as planned?”
Mom gave a faltered look and then reassured me, “Yes, definitely it will hold, but between a substitute wife and the Prince.”
“Substitute what!” I almost blubbered and stood up, “What do you mean? Who is going to substitute my sister? Why will the Wales royalty bring up such an idea? My twin sister is irreplaceable. She has no substitute. That is obsolete and disrespectful to our family,” I retorted.
Uncle Charles beseeched me with the shake of his head and then gave one striking statement, “Emily you have been chosen as the substitute wife for Prince Reuben.”
I was left gaping at them…
Emily’s Point Of ViewThe State Visit and Banquet had a formal aura of honor and orderliness. The heads of States that visited were greeted with a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honor and gun salutes, which was done on a horse guards parade.Imelda and I were adorned in our bedgown, and expensive jewelry, and the queen didn’t know I heard her say to Imelda to return to her closet and change into a unique attire. She told her she shouldn’t share attire with me and she had a role to play as a princess.“You are royalty. Emily is not, so get going,” she affirmed through clenched teeth when Imelda protested. In a jiffy Imelda left and stepped out in a tea-length dress which had polka dots. Points upon facts had proven the queen had never liked me. It was obvious how much the queen despised me. Once she stepped to the queen she tossed her head and smiled heartily.I dared to force out a smile, but I couldn’t. I just wanted to give her the impression I was fine with the queen’s de
Emily’s Point Of View“I want us to look elegant and adorable and of course inseparable in today’s State Visits and Banquets,” that was the voice of Imelda to me as I inspected the bedgown she bought for me. she kept smiling from cheek to cheek as I gaped at the splendor of the gown.“This is beautiful, sis. Oh my god! Oh my god!” I kept covering my mouth as I inspected the formal attire, “Oh this must have cost you so much, sister. Why are you spending so much on me. I am not even a princess yet you are making me feel like one…”“Oh stop bluffing Emily. You are a princess. When I was in a coma I guess the maids and guards must have referred to you as Princess Emily.” She reached for the sack in the bed and took out some silver stilettos and a box I perceived to be jewelry, “You are not just my sister but my only sister and my twin for that matter. If I don’t take care of you then who will. I wish I could even convince the queen to crown you a princess…”We burst into a huge laughter
Emily’s Point of viewI couldn’t stop appreciating Doctor Bill for keeping his side of the secret. Thus far he had acted professionally and never revealed what I intended to leave in the dark forever. Just like everyone he was fascinated to know the whereabouts of Jaden. But this time, I didn’t reveal anything about the murder to him. I had to keep him in the dark where I kept others. I had promised Uncle Charles nobody must not know about the murder.“Oh, I just pray he is safe wherever he is,” Doctor Bill sounded, his eyes rolling behind his glasses, “You know, I was relieved when I saw a man had come into your life to father those babies. But I heard he is a gangster. Is he really one?” he asked gently.I lowered my gaze, feeling like overshadowing anything about Jaden so I could discuss my reason for coming. I had to shake my head without uttering a word. His face grew a bit gravy. I knew he may be putting me in the box of women that had poor choices when it came to men.“Doctor,
Emily’s Point of ViewThe well toned hand squeezed her belly softly before she stared in the mirror. It was Imelda. Her gaze came on the calendar and she widened her gaze to contemplate deeply. Time was fast spent.Today marked one year in marriage, and she had never felt anything close to pregnancy. When she woke up this morning, she had made up her mind to visit Doctor Bill for a pregnancy test.“Oh God I need a miracle,” she mumbled within herself and kept rubbing her stomach, hoping her first child was in there by now. When she rose this morning, she felt a bit weak and fragile. She dimmed her eyes once she noticed that today was the hosting of a crucial royal event.State visits and banquets. The Welsh palace often hosted this event with foreign dignitaries and investitures.“I thought I would surprise my prince-charming with the news of pregnancy today,” she sounded in a teary tone, her face getting meshed in tears and hurt as she stared in the mirror and kept rubbing her stomac
Imeda’s Point of ViewWe had barely thrown a few steps into the palace when one of the maids approached us with a bow and told me Queen Theresa would want to break words with me. At the time I saw the mixed reaction on the face of Emily, and I could tell she was already suspecting it was about her and missing Jaden.I gave her a smile and she struggled to return the complement. With a whisper of assurance to her, I left with the maid.Queen Theresa was admiring one of the most expensive works of art in the history of Welsh royalty. She had her back at me when I stepped in and I had barely settled when she told me to make myself comfortable, and ordered her guards and maids to leave.I was restless like a mouse. Whenever she had something vital or disturbing to tell me she often invited me to her private ball room. And right now appearing in this exquisite room, gave me no aura than that of a troubled soul. These days, two things hung on my mind whenever I saw the queen. Her quest for
Emily’s Point of ViewAll through the time we spent on the carriage riding back to the palace, Imelda kept at her silence but never stopped screwing her face at me as if she was suspecting me of something. I would have been engaged inwardly with my secret sins and the fate that awaited me.But I needed to talk to someone, and I didn’t know if she was in the right mood. I knew the scene that turned out at the station had rattled her cage in one way or the other, and to that I needed to know what she was thinking of me and what action she would take when we got to the palace.I held her arms, and she gently turned to lock gaze with me, “Apologies for stressing you, sis,” my mumbling ended in whistling, as if I wasn’t sure of my next words, “I…I shouldn’t have dated a gangster in the first place,” my stuttering was intentional. Her eyes sprouted exhaustion but not really a sign of doubt. We had never doubted each other and we believed we were the most righteous souls on earth. Our loyalt
