“There’s no need to threaten me. I’ll do my best to find her even if it’s not for your sake,” I replied in a flat voice.

Back then, I had no idea what he had in mind when he told me that I would have to take responsibility if I couldn’t find my sister.

**The next day**

Despite telling my parents that I would try my best to find my sister, I still didn’t have any solid idea where I would find Diana or why she had suddenly decided to disappear. The timing was just too perfect because it was so close to her upcoming wedding. The only source of comfort for me was my gut feeling that told me that she was doing fine wherever she was. If she was truly distressed or if she needed help, I was sure that she would have tried to get in contact with me by now.

After making my escape from my parents and out into the long hallway of the mansion, I ran into one of our oldest housekeepers. The way her eyes lit up told me that she was pleasantly surprised to see that I had returned. Lauren must have worked in our household for way more than ten years now because she started since I was still a child at that time.

“Miss Dahlia…” she whispered my name before smiling a little my way.

Her nervous reaction as her eyes darted up and down the hallway to check if anyone would witness our interaction told me that she was stepping out of her boundaries to greet me. Sometimes the harshness of the life that I’ve led made me forget that I was fortunate to have met and interacted with many kind souls and this woman standing in front of me was one of them.

“Lauren, have you been well?” I asked before showing her a genuine smile.

“Yes, thank you, Miss Dahlia…” she replied softly.

I could tell that despite her fear of being spotted conversing with me, she was glad that she was able to greet me. A sudden idea sparked up in my mind and although it was a risky move, I didn’t have that many cards left up my sleeves and my parents were right that time wasn’t at all on our side.

“Can we talk for a bit? Perhaps, outside in the garden?” I suggested before smiling sweetly at her.

“Umm…yes…” she replied hesitantly.

Lauren seemed more relaxed now that we were together in the garden. The vast garden surrounding the mansion hadn’t changed at all from the last time that I had been there. The various statues of mythical creatures that I found so interesting when I was a child were still there although they had failed to capture my interest this time around.

“Miss Dahlia…what is it that you would like to talk about?” Lauren asked and I could tell that she was more scared than curious.

I turned toward her and offered her a smile before I slowly reached for her hands. The housekeeper’s eyes widened in surprise at my action, but she did not pull her hands away. I still remembered vividly the various times that she had helped me out in the past whenever my parents got mad at me. I may not have that many allies in this house, but I wouldn’t hesitate to count her as one of them.

“Actually, I was just wondering if…you know…any male staff of this mansion had suddenly resigned or disappeared recently?” I asked while focusing my eyes on her face to read her reaction.

“Well…” she murmured before her eyes darted away to the side.

Her reaction gave me the answer that I was looking for. She may not know something directly, but my guess must have been spot on.

“Can you tell me who he is?” I asked softly before applying a little pressure to her hands that I still held in mine.

“I’m sorry but…” she began apologizing.

“There’s nothing for you to be sorry about. A male staff of this mansion suddenly decided to quit his job, how can that be your fault? Right?” I continued pressing further.

I could see a few emotions raging war on poor Lauren’s face as she hesitated. After a short moment of struggling with her own fears, Lauren let out a long sigh of resignation. She turned to face me again before showing me a sad smile.

“His name is Gordon and he suddenly resigned not so long ago. He was working as one of the drivers here,” she whispered as if it was a guilty confession.

Gordon…a driver…

“Thank you. You have no idea just how big of a help you were. Also, I’ll make sure to keep this little chat that we had a secret. Ok?” I said before smiling reassuringly at her.

“Thank you, Miss Dahlia…” she whispered before letting out another sigh.

As if she had just lifted a huge mountain range off of her chest, Lauren looked more at peace and relaxed than before. She smiled at me and nodded.

“Please just call me Leya like you used to…” I told her warmly.

“Miss Leya…I am so sorry that there was nothing that I could do for you and because of that…that happened…you couldn’t come home…” she said in a broken voice, and I could see tears well up in her eyes as she stared up into my face.

“It’s not your fault. If you’ve been feeling any sense of guilt, it has to stop. You shouldn’t feel guilty. What happened…was the way that things should be,” I replied before braving a smile.

In a sense, it wasn’t at all a lie. Instead of my words comforting her, a few tear drops rolled down Lauren’s cheeks and then she started sobbing before her hands flew to cover her face. I wished that I could comfort her properly, but I had bigger problems on my plate to deal with. A slightly bitter taste filled my mouth as I was forced to recognize the start of a very similar pattern that I had seen countless times before.

Dina, what have you done this time?

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Eventual Declaration

"I love you, Dahlia. I really mean it," Anthony whispered to me passionately. "No..." I managed to say in a breathless whisper. I knew that I needed help because there was no way that I could overpower Anthony. His lips were already so close to mine that we were on the verge of kissing. My entire body froze, and for once in a very long while, I was at a loss about what to do. I felt bad for Anthony, and I didn't want to hurt him. However, I also did not want to betray Bradon and my own feelings. I felt the urge to cry my eyes out and wail like a baby, yet I had to hold it in. Once again, I found myself thinking of Bradon and wishing for him to be by my side. If we were together, I believe that there is nothing that we cannot fix and solve. Bradon...Just like my call was answered straight from heaven, suddenly the door to Anthony's hospital room opened. The loud noise drew both of our attention to the man that had hurriedly entered the room. Bradon stormed into the room with an ag

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Beyond Control

"Listen, maybe we should wait until you're discharged from the hospital to talk about this," I told him.I had no idea why Anthony was fervently pushing this issue when he had been quiet before. Perhaps the fact that he was being discharged soon brought about this conversation faster than I was prepared for. I shifted my weight uncomfortably on the chair that I was sitting on beside his hospital bed."I don't think I can wait that long," Anthony said as if he was talking to himself.Suddenly, Anthony sat up in bed before turning his attention to me. It was hard for me to hide my surprise at his sudden and swift movement. I was further surprised when Anthony suddenly swung both his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. I stared up at him as he stared down at me. It never occurred to me that Anthony would make such a swift recovery over such a short period of time and that he was no longer a man bound to the hospital bed."I see that you're recovering very fast," I said rather tha

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Making His Move

I truly meant it when I told him that Anthony had not made any move on me while we were spending time together at the hospital. "Are you sure?" Bradon asked with his brows raised as if he was surprised. "I'm sure. We just talk about random things. He tells me about what happened in his life while I was away and all that. It just feels like we're just keeping each other company," I explained honestly. "I see..." Bradon replied without saying anymore. ...**The day after**"I was supposed to come here with Bradon today but it seems like his work is holding him up, so he told me to head here first. He'll be joining us later for sure," I told Anthony apologetically. "Don't worry about it. I'm more than to blame for that, I think. After all, he's also doing my work and then he's also got his businesses to deal with. Honestly, I don't know how he can manage all that," Anthony said.I could sense the admiration that Anthony had for his brother. Even I thought that it was frankly amazin

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Internal Struggles

Even so, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do about us, and now there was also that complicated and sensitive issue of how I should deal with Anthony."I'm sorry, but I just don't know how I should be feeling right now. I just feel so bad for Anthony and what he had to go through..." I replied quite honestly."You don't have to feel bad for him or for anybody. Just do what you think is best for yourself, or just leave it to me. Anthony will be fine, trust me," Bradon told me with clear certainty in his voice, as if he could foresee the future."I want to help him, but I don't know how I can do that. I think it would make me feel less guilty," I confessed softly."I'm sorry if I played a part in making you feel guilty. There's honestly no need for you to feel that way, and I did not mention your involvement in Anthony's accident to make you feel that you are to blame," Bradon explained."But still..." I mumbled as I felt tears sting the back of my eyes. Not so long ago, hearing Anthony co

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Confession

"I mean, why did you want to pick me up? Did Diana ask you to do it?" I offered the first explanation that I could think of."Diana? This has nothing to do with her," Anthony replied."Then... why?" I asked as confusion flooded every cell of my mind."Because I want to. It's a real shame that I have to tell you like this and in this state, but I'm in love with you, Dahlia," Anthony said as he reached for my hand.At first, I was convinced that I did not hear him right because there was no way that Anthony was in love with me. For a moment, I didn't quite know how to react. I felt Bradon stiffen by my side, but my attention was focused on the look of hope that shone brightly in Anthony's beautiful eyes. It felt like he was waiting for me to acknowledge and accept his feelings for me. However, his confession only spelled out the word 'doom' in my mind."I..." I murmured before I closed my mouth again. My mind kept telling me that it was impossible for Anthony to be in love with me. I ju

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   That Day

During our time away, his parents must have filled him in on what happened while he was still locked up in his deep and long slumber."Don't worry about it. I'll always have your back," Bradon replied without missing a beat."And I promise that I'll always have yours," Anthony replied before he beamed a smile at his brother.I could feel the love between the two brothers, and it brought a smile to my lips to think that the love that they shared closely resembled the bond that I shared with my sister. It suddenly felt like I didn't belong in the room, but just as I was wondering if I should leave to give the two of them some private time and space to catch up, Anthony turned and focused his eyes on my face."I heard that you married Diana in my place..." Anthony said to Bradon, although his eyes were still glued to my face."I did. It had to be done," Bradon replied matter-of-factly."But it seemed like Diana chickened out and ran away before the wedding, so Dahlia ended up taking her
