Two days have passed. Chris is already bothered because he can't contact both his parents. He’s been trying to message them but he got no response after his mother said that they have an emergency meeting so they will come home late. It’s not the first time that it happened, but he’s feeling odd this time. He has to make sure that they are okay.
“You look so scared. They always do this, aren’t you used to it yet?” The demon taunted him like it always does but there’s something about the demon’s tone today that worries Chris more. He didn’t stop dialing his mother’s number but all he receives are system generated response.
He sighed and sat back on his bed after getting tired of pacing back and forth.
“Maybe they are in an important meeting? But they usually call or text when they can’t go home…” Chris immediately picked up his phone after he heard a message notification.
The demon laughed at Chris’ upset face, the one who texted is Kurt.
“Hey, I’m coming over. Help me with the Physics assignment, I bear tribute.” Chris scratched his head. He really thought it was his parents.
He replied, “That better be good or I’ll sending you home.” Chris is obviously joking. He knows that Kurt would barge in if he doesn’t agree anyway. Chris heard the demon clicked its tongue.
“That kid is coming over again…” it murmured before disappearing. Chris doesn’t know why it always leaves when Kurt is around. He wouldn’t see the demon anyway, only Chris could see the demon.
“I’m almost there.” Kurt replied after five minutes. Chris went downstairs to wait for Kurt.
Kurt smiled widely while showing the box of pizza and chicken he brought. Chris couldn’t help but chuckle, he really knows how to make him smile.
“Come in already before I change my mind.” Kurt dashed his way inside the house like a child excited to enter an amusement park.
“Let’s play on your Playstation, the loser will clean up.” Kurt offered, still wearing his goofy smile. Chris grinned, “I thought we’re supposed to do the physics assignment?”
Kurt’s eyes widened, “you mean you haven’t done it yet? I was hoping I could copy your homework…” he mumbled the last words.
“I couldn’t. I was busy trying to contact my parents.” Chris said as he stares at his phone, still waiting for any of his parents’ reply.
“Why, did something happen?” Kurt asked. Kurt wanted to smack himself for being insensitive. There he was talking about playing, he didn’t even notice Chris’ worried face.
“I have no idea. They usually contact me when they can’t go home…” Chris answered. Kurt tapped Chris’ shoulder, “maybe they simply forgot because they are busy. Try not to worry too much, okay?” Kurt tried to console Chris.
“Let’s just do the assignment, so we could play later.” Chris dismissed the topic, maybe Kurt is right that he is just overthinking.
Kurt’s smile is back after hearing the word play, “The loser will clean up, deal?” he repeated his challenge.
“Fine, before you beat me let’s do the homework first.”
--
“What, how could I lose again?!” Chris laughed, Kurt’s reactions whenever he loses never fails to make him laugh.
"I told you, you'll never beat me into this. Make sure to tidy everything later." Chris ate the last slice of pizza while Kurt is still trying to move on the fact that he lost for the nth time. Kurt is about to ask for another round but his phone rang before he could speak. He immediately picks up the phone after seeing that it's his mom.
"I'm in Chris' home. I asked him to help me with homework." Kurt answered, phone on one hand and the other is busy cleaning the table. Chris is still busy eating his pizza. He picked up his phone to see if his mother replied to his messages but there's still no response, nor his father. He sighed and put back his phone on his pocket.
"He's so lucky..." Chris mumbled as he watches Kurt talk to his mom over the phone.
"Hey, my mom asked me to go home early today..." Kurt couldn't continue his sentence. “I'll clean up. Go home already.” Chris answered casually.
"I’ll make it up to you next time.” Kurt said as he picks up his things.
“Bye!” Kurt waved his hand without looking back.
The house is quiet once again. Chris smiled, but it doesn't reach his eyes. He realized that ever since they moved to their new house, it's only lively when Kurt is around. Chris has other friends too but only Kurt would bother talking to him all day especially with his personality.
"Hmm, you looked sad." Chris is already used with the demon appearing announced so he wasn't surprised anymore.
"Maybe I am." he answered while wiping the table. The demon didn't respond so Chris focused on cleaning. He was about to throw out the trash when his phone rang. He immediately took his phone out, expecting that it will be his mother but an unknown number is calling.
He felt odd once again, he answered the call and waited for the other line to speak, "Hello, is this the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dillon?" Chris felt his heart skip a beat.
"Yes, this is Chris Dillon. May I know who’s speaking?” He asked the woman on the other line.
Silence.
The long pause made Chris more anxious than he already is, "This is from St. Michael Hospital. I'm very sorry, your parents got into an incident. According to the report, their car was hijacked. Your father is already dead upon arriving the hospital your mother fought hard but she died an hour after she was brought to the hospital..." Chris blanked out after hearing the news. He couldn't understand the woman's words anymore. He dropped the call, he didn't mean to but everything is hard to absorb.
Tears started trickling down his face, his whole body felt numb. All he could do is focus on one emotion; anger. He felt intense rage for the first time. All he could think of is avenging his parents.
Chris heard a familiar laugh, the demon is laughing beside him.
Finally!
The demon watched with anticipation, it watched how a pure soul collapsed and succumbed by pure hate. Divine white is quickly tinted by black. The demon felt its mouth water because of the unhinged soul's scent.
"Are you going to kill me?" Chris asked. His voice is already broken from crying. He is aware that it is the only reason why the demon never left him, because it wanted to feed on him. The demon remained quiet, still enticed with the scent of the newly corrupted soul.
"You said demons can make contract with humans, for the price of their soul." Chris spoke again.
"And?" the demon responded this time. It definitely likes the direction of their conversation. Chris wiped away his tears. The pain he should be feeling is overpowered by his desire for revenge, "I want my revenge, I’ll do the contract. I don't care if you take my soul."
"The rules are simple," The demon started, "I will be on your side, fulfilling your wishes until you served your revenge. In exchange, I will feed on your soul, until nothing is left."
Chris didn't budge, "Like I said, I don't care. I have to find the people behind my parents' death. They will pay. They will pay for everything."
Chris flinched as he suddenly felt intense pain on his left wrist. He checked his wrist and an image started to etch on his skin. It felt like his skin is being seared, it continued for over a minute but Chris bore the pain. The pain stopped as soon as the image is completed.
Image of a crown.
"The contract has been completed." The demon gladly announced.
Chris stared at the demon, "State your name demon." The demon laughed, completely delighted and amused with what is happening.
“My name is Damien.”
‘So this is how it feels…’Random thoughts kept lingering on Chris’ mind, as if someone else is controlling it. He sees several memories, some happy, and most are the saddest moments of his life. He closed his eyes. He could almost feel every moment again, like it is currently happening.Chris is being embraced by the demon or at least, that’s how Chris perceives it. He was being enveloped by the demon’s darkness. He doesn’t feel any physical pain, only the utter silence and coldness which he unusually feels refuge. He thinks it was ridiculous, he really thought that the demon would bite him or anything similar to feed on him.His mind starts to wander, he wanted to see them more. Even though he is well aware that it was all in the past. He simply wanted to see them again; alive and smiling at each other like all other “head-over-heels to each other” couples. He missed it, how long has it been since
“I’ll kill them.” Chris muttered, purely out of blind anger. He checked the documents once again. He couldn’t grasp the entirety of his parents’ work but he is certain that they are killed because of it.“Heh, you should see them first before you do that.” Damien materialized beside him and handed over his phone, “Someone called you earlier when you are all frantic searching for the truth. The man over the phone told me that he's a close friend of your parents, from the company they are working from.” The demon grinned after seeing Chris’ reaction. There is obvious distrust in his eyes, he now sees everyone as an adversary.“You talked to them? What did you tell them about you?” Chris had to ask, he simply can’t explain Damien’s existence to people. The demon rolled his eyes, “I told them the simplest lie, that I’m your friend. What, do you really think I would go aro
“Please take your seats.” The man inside said. Chris politely sat, he’s not nervous as he was earlier but he still can’t do eye contact to any of them. He is afraid that he would reveal every weakness he has the moment he meets their eyes. “Welcome to Fantasia, Chris. It’s your first time going here, am I right?” The man greeted. He only sees the man in internet pictures, the CEO and founder of Fantasia Co., Henry Davis. Chris estimated that the man is already in his early 60’s. From the articles that he had read in the past, he is known to be a generous man. The company always does numerous charity events, environmental campaigns and all sorts. But it’s a lot different now that he’s facing the CEO. He looks very intimidating even with the old age. “My mother brought me here once, but it was for a short time. It was back when they just got employed.” Chris answered in detail. He remembered being introduced to other employees but he can’t recall their faces an
“Chris.” Kurt immediately approached his friend. Chris stood and welcomed the newcomers. He could see his other classmates arriving one by one. Chris figured that they came here as soon as the class dismissal since they are still wearing their uniform. It was his parents’ wake which is organized by Henry, just like what he promised. The same man that escorted him arrived to his house again, fetched him then brought him in the funeral parlor. It’s been hours but he didn’t dare looking at his parents from the casket. He knew that he would cry again so he chose not to. He still had to accept visitors. He haven’t seen the demon today, he assumes that Damien sees this event as boring. He is thankful too, because he wouldn’t have to deal with his daily dose of taunting. “Our condolences, Chris. Our adviser also said that she will come later.” One of his classmates, their class president spoke. Chris smiled, it didn’t reach his eyes but he’s trying to be as
The demon that Damien called as Linus is smiling arrogantly. Linus is still busy feeding from Joaqin who’s obviously flustered. Everyone could see how his face is flushing, from embarrassment or anger, Chris can’t really tell. Joaqin pushed Linus away after regaining his composure. The demon laughed merrily, “You’re blushing!” “Shut up demon.” Chris knows that it is wrong to judge people from their first meeting, but Linus is getting on his nerves. He’s more arrogant than Damien! Linus didn’t mind Joaqin’s burst out, “Miss me?” Linus said with a playful smile. Damien snorted, “As if. It’s been a while though. I really thought you were killed somewhere.” Linus pursed his lips like a child sulking to his parents. “What’s with the cold treatment? Here I am so excited to meet you again after…5 years? Or was it 7?” Both Chris and Joaqin totally felt out of place, both are asking why they in their current situation. Joaqin cl
Chris fixed his tie as they prepare for the funeral. The wake is over and the funeral is quickly held. Some of Chris’s classmates are present and most are his parents’ colleagues. He tried hard to memorize each faces that came to his parents wake so he would know if there are new faces that would attend the funeral. He saw Fidel approaching with 3 other people he’s not familiar with. Chris is sure that they didn’t attend the wake. “Hello. It’s probably your first time seeing us but your parents told many good things about you, especially Melissa. She’s so proud of you.” The only woman in the group spoke, “we’re in the same team as your parents and Fidel.” Chris’ attention is quickly piqued by her words. He immediately observed each person in the group. The woman who approached him looks a bit younger than her mother. Her short hair made her look more sophisticated and her smile is quite intimidating. “I’m Leila Forbes,” the woman extended her hands fo
“What’s with that outfit?” Chris grimaced. Damien is wearing an oversized sweater, and large eyeglasses. Damien placed the laptop bag he’s holding at Chris’ study table and quickly retaliated, “You don’t have any fashion sense in you so don’t you dare critique my outfit.” Chris rolled his eyes but he’s curious to what is up. Damien pulled the laptop out and casually sat beside Chris on the bed. Chris crossed his legs and waited for the demon to settle. He still wonders where the demon gets all of his things but Chris knows that the demon wouldn’t answer decently so he won’t bother asking. He doesn't want to induce more stress to himself. “What are you doing?” Chris asked as Damien opens the laptop. He is too curious to wait patiently. Damien pulled out the flash drive he stole from Fantasia, “We’ll check the flash drive now.” Damien answered and plugged the flash drive. “I have my own laptop you know.” Chris answered and pointed his laptop placed on t
Leila stared at Chris’ face, she could almost see Melissa in him. Chris, without a doubt, is her son. Melissa always says that they should protect Chris if ever something happened to her and Christopher. Leila would often dismiss their conversation by saying that all of them would surely live a long life. She even remember saying a week before they died that Melissa would still see her grand children’s children. She didn’t expect that they would really depart early. She immediately broke down after hearing the news. They are her good friends, she treats Melissa as her older sister more than her own kin. She couldn’t imagine how it feels for Chris. He’s still young to be an orphan. “Melissa saved my life.” She said as a response to Chris’ question. “I used to have a trashy life back when I haven’t arrived at Fantasia. My family already abandoned me, I’m in a very toxic romantic relationship and I do all sorts of illegal things to survive. I knew that I don’t h
