# Mia

By the time I returned home, I felt lighter, calmer—almost cleansed. Bashing heads had a way of doing that for me. Yes, that was my secret side hustle. I helped the helpless in my own twisted way. Violence was my language.

I ran an anonymous site where women trapped in abusive relationships could reach out. Their oppressors always ended up learning the same lesson: pain humbles. Clara and Diane were just part of the list tonight.

After changing out of my bloodied clothes, I scrolled through my phone. It buzzed endlessly with office messages—I ignored them all. My thumb froze on Ariella's name. She'd been spamming me honeymoon pictures, glowing and carefree. I stopped replying when she turned the conversation to my love life.

Speaking of the devil, her name flashed across my screen.

"Hey, Mia," Ariella's face beamed on the caller ID, bright and annoyingly happy. "You've been ignoring my messages again."

"That's because you've been asking questions I don't want to hear," I mutte

    # MatthewThis was the second time I was losing control in front of Mia. Though I craved the comfort of her arms around me, I still needed to get my shit together. I gently lifted her hands off me. "I'm fine now," I whispered, my voice hoarse though both of us knew I was not. The concern in her blue eyes only deepened, so I added with a weak attempt at humor, "I wouldn't mind sleeping in your arms though." I winced when she did not buy it. I had not thought she cared this much."What did my mother tell you?" I asked."She said you lost your baby girl, the one you loved so much, and that she's sorry she was so cruel."I swallowed hard. My mom rarely apologized. "She can tell me that herself."A small smile curved Mia's lips. "That's what I told her.""Evelyn was the best thing that ever happened to me," I said, my chest tightening as her name left my lips. I rarely spoke about her, but now the words spilled unbidden. "She had my eyes, my smile, even my laugh. Every morning she would

    # Mia So there was a secret child. I sighed as I dropped onto the bed, the mattress sinking beneath me like it wanted to swallow me whole. My mind would not stop racing. Did he send the child away because I was coming? Or was the child hidden in one of the many rooms of this mansion? And what about the mother? Where was she in all of this? I turned restlessly, pulling at the sheets, unable to settle. On one hand I had no right to ask questions. Not if I was sticking with my claim that there was nothing between us. That was the safest excuse to hold onto. That way I could pretend not to care. Pretend it did not matter. Pretend he did not matter. But the truth was harder to ignore than I liked. That kiss had not been nothing. The way his hands lingered, the way his eyes searched me, the way my body betrayed me, it all screamed of something that was not nothing. And now with this revelation I had an opening, a reason to keep my walls up. He was just like the rest. A liar. A man

    # MatthewShe moaned into my mouth, making little attempt to push me away. So this was the language my Mia understood best. Did she really think I would just let her walk out after seeing her in my shirt? Mine. The thought of her bare beneath it drove me insane. My hand cupped her breast through the fabric, her gasp opening the way for me to deepen the kiss. I teased and pinched, determined she would be just as restless through dinner as I was. Pulling her flush against me, I gripped her ass, squeezing hard, already imagining the sounds she would make when I finally spanked her. When I felt her trembling, I forced myself to let go. Her lips were swollen, her eyes hazy. Perfect. Mission accomplished."Dinner is ready baby girl," I whispered in her ear and pulled her with me giving her no chance to compose herself.I should have known my mother would use this chance to scrutinize Mia. She sat across from us, that patient, amused look on her face as if she were peeling Mia apart with her

    # MiaFuck. Fuck. Fuck. The word pounded through my skull the moment I laid eyes on her. Lady G. A fucking legend. And she was Matthew's mother? Oh shit.I almost gawked when I caught it, the ink curling at the base of her neck. An S, dark against her pale skin, identical to the one etched on my back. My mark. My secret.I didn't know whether to feel awe, fear, or jealousy. Lady G. Grace Foster. The woman I had worshiped from the shadows, the ghost whose reputation had shaped me. And now she was smiling at me like some polished socialite, all warmth and grace, but her eyes… her eyes told me she recognized me.Trailing behind the butler, I forced myself to stay calm, though inside I was screaming. I didn't breathe properly until I shut the door to my room. Only then did I let myself collapse against the wall, my chest heaving, my legs trembling.Lady G. Here. Alive. In front of me.---The memories hit like a punch.I had been nineteen. Trapped. Angry. Helpless. That morning had starte

    # MatthewIt was obvious from the frown on her face that she and her mother weren't on good terms, and yet she would rather stay with her than with me. That stung more than I cared to admit. I sighed. Clearly, I needed to work on my approach. She hung up with a wince, crossed her arms, and turned to the window, shutting me out as neatly as closing a door. I swallowed hard. The motion pushed her arms higher against her chest, lifting the curves I'd once tasted, and just like that, the memory of her soft moans threatened to undo me. Damn it. My lust was spiraling out of control, and she wasn't even trying.I kept my hands tight on the wheel and let the silence stretch, hoping she might mistake it for me being upset and compromise a little. But knowing Mia… I wasn't holding my breath. To distract myself, I turned my thoughts to Renson and how to get him off Mia's back. Knowing Renson, it didn't matter if Mia was innocent or not—someone had to take the blame. And instead of blaming his us

    # Mia"I am not exploring anything with you," I exclaimed, though even to my own ears it did not sound convincing. My voice cracked at the edges, trembling with something I refused to name.He looked at me then, really looked, as though he could peel me open with those dark eyes and expose every flicker of doubt I was trying so hard to bury. The corner of his mouth twitched, not quite a smile, not quite a sneer, but something that told me he had heard the weakness in my protest.Heat crept up my neck, shame and anger battling inside me. I hated that he could pull reactions out of me so easily, hated that he made me feel… seen. And yet my pulse betrayed me, beating a frantic rhythm that only grew louder in the silence that stretched between us."I said no," I repeated, softer this time, almost whispering, but the words lacked the steel I wanted them to carry. His fingers drummed lightly against the steering wheel, deliberate, unhurried, the gesture of a man who believed he could bend t
