Chapter 1

I stared at my son Caleb Sheridan's upturned little face, and my heart sank.

He had a point there. Bryan Hunter couldn't eat celery. I remembered that very clearly.

On the day Bryan first started kindergarten, his mother, Annette Morris, grabbed the teacher's hand and repeatedly reminded her anxiously, "Please, you have to remember this. Bryan can't have celery. Even the tiniest amount will make it impossible for him to breathe."

Some time later, the kindergarten organized a salad-making activity for the kids. Bryan's classmates didn't know about his celery allergy, and one of them insisted on putting celery in his bowl.

Bryan took one bite and immediately started gasping for breath. It scared all the children in the class into tears, including Caleb.

Annette was furious and immediately called out the other child's parents in the parents' group chat.

"What if something happened to Bryan? Who would have been responsible for that? Why wasn't the teacher watching them?"

The child's parents thought Annette was making a big deal out of nothing and swiftly fired back at her. As a result, the two families got into a heated argument in the group chat.

In the end, the principal had to step in and mediate before things finally calmed down.

The incident had caused such a huge uproar in the group chat that I still remembered it vividly.

I crouched down and looked at Caleb. "Cal, I need you to think carefully now. Are you really sure you saw Bryan being taken away by a teacher?"

I remembered a video I had seen before. Children often mistook their imaginations for reality. They weren't necessarily lying, but they could say all sorts of things that weren't true.

However, Caleb's expression was unusually serious. His little brows were furrowed, and he didn't look like he was lying.

"It's true, Mommy. Bryan fell asleep during class that day, so a teacher came and took him away. The teacher was wearing a hat, so I couldn't see who it was. But I saw Bryan turn around and call for me. He was crying and saying he didn't want to go. His face was completely pale, and he looked really scared."

"And what is the punishment room you mentioned?" I pressed for more information, feeling my heart clench.

"After class, I went to look for Bryan. I heard something near the stairs, so I secretly went over and saw the teacher shove Bryan into the little room at the very end. It had a black door. Then I heard Bryan cry for a while before suddenly going quiet. I couldn't hear anything after that."

My head was buzzing.

Caleb never lied. The last time we were at the supermarket, he took a piece of candy and forgot to pay for it. After we walked out, he pulled me back inside to pay.

How could a child like him make up a story about a punishment room?

Forcing down my rising panic, I sent Annette a message.

Then I took Caleb by the hand and headed toward the activity room, where we happened to run into his teacher, Vera Jones, handing out stickers to the children.

I took a deep breath and walked over. Doing my best to make my voice sound casual, I commented, "Ms. Jones, I haven't seen Bryan today. Is he feeling unwell?"

Ms. Jones handed a sticker to the child beside her before turning to me.

"Oh, Mrs. Hunter said he was going to the hospital for a checkup today, so he's off for the day."

Just then, my phone vibrated with a message from Annette.

During the police interrogation, Vera confessed to all of her crimes. She admitted that the first time she saw Bryan pick the celery out of his bowl and toss it aside, she was instantly reminded of her son. In his final days, he'd been so hungry that he had to dig out moldy food scraps from the trash.Vera believed Bryan's wastefulness was a sign of his disregard for the importance of food and the value of life, so she started hypnotizing him every day during nap time.During the hypnosis sessions, Vera learned that Bryan wasn't actually allergic to celery. When he was little, he had eaten celery once and disliked the taste. He deliberately spat it out, but he did it in such an extreme manner that he even had trouble breathing afterward. His parents had assumed that it was an allergic reaction and told everyone that he was allergic to celery.Vera was furious about that. To her, Bryan's picky eating was practically a sin. She forced him to eat large amounts of celery at home every

As I stood at the entrance, every second felt like an eternity. The wind whipped against my face, yet I couldn't feel it. It felt as though my heart was being roasted over a fire pit, while a scalding stone seemed lodged in my throat. Even breathing hurt.I stared at the kindergarten building, unable to look away. My mind kept going over all the dangers Caleb might have encountered. Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. Finally, the security guard emerged from the building holding Caleb's hand.I hurriedly wiped away my tears, my body shaking from the emotional distress. I watched as Caleb came out with the security guard. The moment he saw me, he threw himself into my arms like a frightened little bird.I held him tightly, feeling the warmth of his body against mine. The ax that had been hanging over my heart finally lifted, and my eyes instantly burned with tears.Just then, the sound of police sirens came from the distance. I took Caleb by the hand and hurried toward the

Goosebumps broke out all over my body.It was terrifying enough for an adult to hear something like that, let alone a child. Just listening to it had sent chills down my spine.Later on, the parents noticed something was wrong with the children, and Vera was fired from her previous kindergarten. It so happened that Caleb's kindergarten had an opening for a teacher at the same time, so she applied and got the job.At last, I had the complete picture. This explained why Vera reacted so strongly to Bryan's picky eating and Samuel's strained relationship with his little sister.I took a deep breath, doing my best to stay calm."Leon, are you sure this information is accurate? Is there any chance you got something wrong?""Kate, I had three different people look into it, and I even found a neighbor who lived in the same complex as Vera back then. The information couldn't be truer."Vera has basically directed her hatred for her son's stepbrother, the boy who was never properly discip

Ms. Jones never explicitly told Samuel to give up his chicken, but her implication couldn't be clearer.Samuel's hand paused, still gripping the spoon tightly. His brows furrowed slightly. In a small but firm voice, he protested, "But Ms. Jones, Mrs. Potts served the chicken, and there's plenty left. If Evan wants more, he can ask her for more. I like chicken, too, and Evan isn't my little brother. I don't want to give him my chicken."That was how a child should react. He should be able to express his preferences openly, rather than sacrifice his own wishes just to be a thoughtful and sensible child. However, the moment Ms. Jones heard this, the smile vanished from her face. The corners of her lips straightened, and her gaze turned cold. She said nothing more. She simply straightened up and stared down at Samuel, the look in her eyes seemingly emanating a kind of pressure that made Samuel's head slowly droop down.I was still observing them through the binoculars, my heart clench

The next morning, I took Caleb to kindergarten. As soon as we arrived at the entrance, I saw Ms. Jones. She had faint dark circles under her eyes, making her seem a little haggard. I figured she wouldn't have gotten much sleep after Annette's outburst."Ms. Jones, don't take what Annette said too much to heart. She's just grieving right now," I said.Ms. Jones' lips twitched into a strained smile, and she said softly, "I know. Thank you for your concern."Without saying anything else to me, she turned to the side to receive the other children. Though I didn't catch anything unusual from her expression, I still felt a little unsettled.Just then, Samuel and Maureen arrived. The moment Samuel saw Ms. Jones, he stopped in his tracks.Clutching the hem of Maureen's blouse tightly, he said in a timid voice, "Ms. Jones, I got along really well with my little sister yesterday. I even let her have my drawing book all to herself."He kept his head lowered as he spoke, his voice barely aud

The police told Annette the results of their investigation and said that, for the time being, they had found no connection between Caleb and Bryan's death.Unexpectedly, Annette turned her anger toward Ms. Jones instead. She sent several voice messages in the parents' group chat, her voice furious and tearful."If Ms. Jones hadn't failed to keep an eye on the children during nap time, how could Bryan have gotten out and fallen into the pond? She was negligent! She needs to be held accountable for this!"However, Maureen Carter, whose son, Samuel Lewis, was one of Caleb's classmates as well, spoke up in defense of Ms. Jones."Annette, you need to calm down. Ms. Jones has been a very responsible teacher all along. My son used to fight with his little sister over toys every day, but now, whenever he gets home, he volunteers to let her have anything she wants. He even lets her pick her toys first. I've been meaning to thank Ms. Jones properly for that!"Another parent chimed in, "That
