HELENA

The silence after his words felt heavier than anything he had said before. I didn’t speak again; there was nothing left to argue with. He had already decided I was something still unfinished and that was somehow worse than being worthless. I needed to leave, get the hell out of there. with that, I looked at the fire as it cracked softly between us.

For the first time, I become aware of how small the cabin really was. How easily he fille it without trying. How little space there was for me to exist without being observed. That was about the only thing I missed about the palace. it was big enough for me to go unnoticed for hours.

He stood first, not rushed, now slow. Certain. He picked up a small bundle near the fire. Wrapped cloth, supplies, something prepared long before I woke. “You are leaving” I said before I could stop myself. it wasn’t a question. He stopped, didn’t answer immediately. That alone was an answer.

Finally, he looked at me. “You can stay.” He said. “But not here.” my chest tightened. that wasn’t safety. That was removal. He wanted me gone before trouble found him because of me. “Where am I supposed to go?” I asked, he paused. Then reached for something, a paper, a scrap, a mark drawn quickly in charcoal.

He stepped closer and dropped it beside me. Not gently, not harshly, just final. “Follow this path.” He said. I started at it. A direction, not a destination. Just enough. Well, I knew where my destination was. I looked up at him. “And you?” I asked quietly. He didn’t look at me when he answered.

“I have other things to deal with.” Of course he did. people like him always did. he moved toward the door. For a moment, I thought he would leave without another word. But then he stopped. Not turning, just paused. “If you survive the next stretch” he said. “You will reach places where you stop needing help from strangers.”

A beat, “That is where you will find out what you actually are.” And then he left. What did he mean by that? confused, I wondered. But I already knew what I was. I was a maid who escaped from the palace. a fugitive whose life was in danger should she be discovered.

I sat there, not moving for a long time. even after the door closed. Even after his footsteps faded. Even after the cabin settle back into silence. It was ridiculous, really. I didn’t move for a long time. what was I expecting, him to take care of me and nurse me back to health. Wishful thinking.

He was gone and yet the space still felt like he was there. I stared at the mark he had left behind. A direction. Not comfort, not protection. Just instruction. My fingers hovered over it for a moment before I pulled back. I didn’t trust it. I didn’t trust him, what if he was sending me to my death. But I also didn’t have anything else.

A bitter laugh almost left my throat, but it died before it could form. Of course this was my life now. following the directions from strangers who decided whether I lived or died. I pushed myself up slowly. Pain answered immediately. Every muscle protested. Every breath felt heavier than it should.

The fire was still warm, but it no longer felt like shelter. Just temporary survival. I glanced around the cabin one last time. it didn’t belong to me, nothing there did. I took a careful step toward the door.

Then another, each movement slower than the last. when I finally stepped outside, the cold hit differently this time.

Not like danger, like reality returning. The forest stretched ahead of me. endless. Indifferent. No footsteps waited for me anymore. No voice and not decisions being made of my behalf. Just me. I looked down at the path he had marked. It didn’t look like safety. It looked like uncertainty that had been given shape.

Something given to me instead of something I chose. My hand tightened slightly at my side. “Fine,” I whispered to no one. Not agreement, not trust, just movement. Because standing still, was no longer an option. And so, I started walking.

For a moment, I wondered what would have happened if I had not met him. if I had stayed on the road, if I had just let everything end when it almost did. the thought didn’t bring peace. It brought nothing at all. Maybe that was worse. I exhaled slowly. The forest didn’t wait for me to be ready, it never had.

Neither had anything else. So, I kept moving, one step, then another. Each one heavier than the last but mine. The cabin disappeared behind me without ceremony. No goodbye, no safety, no answers. Just silence swallowing what little certainly I had left. I didn’t look back, because if I did, I might stop walking and I couldn’t afford that anymore.

HELENA I had heard the truth about my mother before, but never like this. Never from the mouth of the woman who helped destroy her. I stood there surrounded by the dead, watching the king cry like the boy he once had been and for the first time. I understood something. He had lost his father, and I had lost my mother. But our families had not suffered separately. They had been connected from the beginning. The Queen Dowager looked at me, and I looked back at her. “I don’t regret anything, I still believe my action kept this kingdom safe.” She averted her gaze and looked at her son kneeling in front of her. “You might wish I was never your mother. But I don’t regret having you.” she looked at him for a moment before continuing.“It took me two years to find out who killed my husband. During that time, I dealt with the sudden deaths in the palace. but I never stopped looking for the person responsible.”She extended her hand as if she wanted to touch him. the king recoiled as if her v

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 127 – THE FIRST TRUTH

KING Hearing that old ghost talking about my father got my insides cold. My father didn’t die the way the kingdom believed he did. I had spent most of my life convincing myself that I had buried that truth a long time ago. Apparently, I was wrong. Again. I shook my head with a mocking smile playing on my lips.My head hanging low in shame. I always blamed mother for everything that went wrong in my life. because of her personality and the kind of person she was. It was easy to shift the blame on her. Now I realized that I was only a coward hiding behind his mother’s skirts. I was no better than her.I was only better at pretending to be good. The old ghost stood in front of me, his dead eyes fixed on mine and for the first time in decades, I felt like the frightened boy I had been on the night of my father’s death. Nobody spoke, not Julian, not Mark or even Helena. They were all waiting for me to answer. But I needed something before answering, a nod, a step forward, anything from ei

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 126 – THE DEAD

MARK I have never seen so many dead people standing on one place. I was close to pissing my pants just standing there. Everyone else seemed unbothered to be standing with dead people but I was scared out of my mind. The living and the dead should not mix. It was unheard of and I was done acting like I wasn’t affected. My brother had seen the battlefield and many dead people, but I doubted he had seen so many at once. But I understood why he wasn’t affected. My sister-in-law, well, she was connected to them. they were there because of her. not that I blamed her, but I wished she could just give them what they want and send them off. If I weren’t the one who promised safety a few hours ago, I would have disappeared from that crowd a long time ago. But now I couldn’t. I was forced to stand there with dead people a few feet away from me. if that wasn’t torture, I didn’t know what was. Somehow though, them seeing there didn’t seem like the worst part of this thing. It felt like only the

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 125 – ROYAL SHAME

JULIAN I was so ashamed I wanted to hide. Our shame was too great and our crimes even greater. Most importantly. I wondered if I even deserved my wife. Earning her forgiveness was something I felt I had no right to anymore. It pained me to see how she got hurt while I was away. But what broke me was the fact that my family destroyed hers. From her mother and now her. What we owed her; we wouldn’t be able to repay in this lifetime. The Queen Dowager stepped forward. She was not innocent in all of this but today, she stood in front like a spoke’s person for the innocent. Didn’t death exempt her from her crimes? The moment she stepped forward. Everyone moved away from her. She looked at Helena and then as me. “She is right.” The courtyard fell silent. The Queen Dowager looked toward the dead. “They are here because the kingdom must remember.” It sounded ironic coming from her. Did she remember what she did to her mother. To her. I looked at my wife. “What happens now?” Father asked a

KINGThe bells had stopped ringing. I stood at the palace entrance watching the guards running from one side of the courtyard to the other. Nobody knew what to do anymore. Orders were being shouted, but nobody seemed to know who to listen to. then the first scream came from outside. “They are here!”My heart stopped. I didn’t ask who, I didn’t need to, I knew the dead had reached the palace. father’s mess was not as great; mine was greater than anything in the history of this kingdom. My mess had brought the dead to my door.I stepped forward and the moment I saw them, my legs almost gave out.Hundreds of them with my mother leading. She just couldn’t stay dead, could she? They were walking through the palace gates. Not running, not attacking just walking. Somehow, that was even more terrifying. Their clothes were clean; they had not been buried. Their families had cleaned and dressed them

  • Surviving the World to Escape Him   CHAPTER 123 – EXPOSED

JULIANWhen Mark and I rushed to the gate, what we saw was not what I was expecting. I had expected to see the dead as the guard reported. That I saw but I never thought I would see my wife controlling them. The Queen Dowager said they were not her army, that she was not controlling them. But I heard seen them obey her word and stopped. The Dowager had said called them witnesses. But to what? I was curious to know but at the cost of my wife’s safety, I wanted to take her home. Currently, she was confused and needed safety more than the circus. “Witnesses to what?” Helena asked. “To what was done.”The words echoed through the darkness; I looked toward the palace. Helena’s fire grew around her, getting brighter. Suddenly an image appeared in the sky. Yan laughing as she was dragged by her air to the cold palace. The chains she had ordered. The empty bowl, the water she begged for only for it to be spilled on the ground. The cold concrete floor. Her body laying there, me carrying her

HELENAHe was back, panic flared. Should I run? stupid thought. Where would I go? How far could I get with a broken body and no strength? Begging? Maybe that would work. He was alone now. HELENA “Fire, everyone out! there is a fire.” Smoke choked me before I was fully awake. I coughed rushing out of the servants’ quarters.
