Chapter 4

Penulis: Pearly Dream
In the blink of an eye, I turned two years old.

For the last two years, the Fairchild residence had been absolute chaos.

On this particular day, I was sitting in my stroller, sunbathing by the pool.

Natalie dragged my seventh-oldest brother, Elias Fairchild, over to the pool. "Eli, you spend way too much time typing away at your keyboard every day; you need to get some sun!"

When she turned her head and spotted me, a nasty look flashed across her eyes before she adopted an innocent expression. "You're out here soaking up the sun, too, Nev? Shall I push you over to the edge of the pool so you can look at the little goldfish?"

I sneered. [Goldfish, my ass. Who on earth raises goldfish in a swimming pool? If you're going to try to murder me, at least put some effort into the cover story. Honestly, she's got more water in her brain than there is in this damn pool.]

Natalie walked up behind my stroller, gripping the handlebars. Right at that moment, Damian stepped forward and stopped her. "Mrs. Fairchild has given strict instructions that you are not allowed near Ms. Nevaeh, Ms. Natalie."

Natalie pouted before turning to look at Elias and turning on the waterworks instantly. "Eli, look at them. I don't even have the right to go near Nev anymore…"

Elias' brows knitted, and his fingers flew across his keyboard. "Damian, you're just a bodyguard. Don't abuse your authority."

Damian stood his ground, unfazed. "This is stipulated in the agreement."

Elias scoffed. "What a load of bull. It's nothing but a bunch of broken systems!"

He slammed his finger down on the Enter key. "I just breached your security network. As of now, your communications are cut off, and your surveillance is fried. I'd love to see how you enforce the agreement without your precious system backing you up!"

Damian's expression changed slightly. The moment his hand went to his earpiece, Elias ambushed him with a stun pen, sending him crashing to the ground.

Natalie's eyes lit up when she saw that. She abruptly grabbed my stroller and shoved it toward the pool. "Nev, go look at the little goldfish!"

The wheels rolled rapidly, bringing me closer and closer to the edge. In the nick of time, a figure darted out from the side. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

A redheaded teenager grabbed my stroller and yanked it back. It was my eighth brother, Everett Fairchild, who had just returned from abroad. "Natalie, are you fucking insane? Are you trying to murder my younger sister?"

A murderous glint flashed in Natalie's eyes. Instead of backing off, she threw her entire body weight against the stroller.

With a loud splash, both my stroller and I were pushed into the deep end. Then, she collapsed to the ground, burying her face in her hands and sobbing loudly. "Why'd you push me, Ever? I was just trying to hold onto the stroller, but you pushed Nev in!"

Everett was just about to dive in to save me when Natalie tackled his legs, clinging to him for dear life while bawling her eyes out. "You bullied me the second you came back. What did I do to deserve this?"

Elias couldn't remain indifferent, after all. He had just rushed to the edge of the pool when Natalie clutched his pant leg. "Don't go over there, Eli! Ever has lost his mind. He'll push you in, too!"

Elias immediately shielded her behind his back. "You've gone too far, Everett! Nat was just keeping Nev company. Why'd you push her?"

Ethan and Elliot, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, also joined in to condemn Everett. "Everett, you cause trouble the second you set foot back home. Apologize to Nat right now!"

"You've seriously let us down. How did our family raise such a malicious creature like you?"

Stripped of any way to defend himself, Everett trembled with pure rage. "Are you guys fucking blind? She was the one who pushed the stroller! Where's the surveillance camera? Let's pull up the security footage!"

Elias stared at him blankly. "Save your breath. The security system just went down; it didn't catch a single thing."

Everett was beside himself with rage and panic. "What the hell are you all waiting for? Save her!"

Ethan and Elliot looked utterly confused. "Save who?"

Natalie immediately beat him to the punch, pointing at the pool and wailing, "Everett lost his mind. He pushed Nev into the pool. He almost pushed me in, too! Nev is probably... dead by now!"

While Ethan and Elliot forced Everett back into a corner until his eyes welled with frustrated tears, I sighed and crawled out of the pool on all fours. "You're all so noisy."

I looked coldly at these intellectually challenged brothers of mine. "Who said… the surveillance cameras… were down?"

I watched the farce coldly. My tender, childish face was completely devoid of emotion. [And here I thought she might have come up with some brilliant scheme after lying low for three years. Turns out, it's just another run-of-the-mill stunt.]Mom didn't even bother to spare her another glance. "Damian, hold her down and hand her directly to the cops. She's guilty of attempted murder-for-hire, conspiring with a criminal syndicate, and grand theft of major trade secrets. Those three charges together are more than enough to make sure she rots in prison for the rest of her life!""No! Don't call the cops! Save me, Dad! "Help me, Ev, Ez! I'm your most beloved baby sister, Nat!" Natalie shrieked. However, this time, Evan and Ezra gritted their teeth and looked away.Realizing her damsel-in-distress act wouldn't save her, Natalie's mask finally cracked. "What gives any of you the right to judge me with those nauseating looks? Everything this family owns should have been mine! Why is it t

Scarface sneered, "Don't worry. We get paid to make problems disappear. Let's go, fellas!"The group stealthily approached the villa, jimmied the door lock, and glided inside undetected. "The Fairchild residence's defense is a joke!" Scarface snorted. However, right after Natalie left, a distinct click echoed. The ground gave way beneath him, and he dropped straight down. Immediately following his scream was the harsh clanking sound of metal snapping shut. "Boss!" The lackeys behind him went pale from shock and were just about to rush forward to check when the ceiling above them suddenly split open. More than a dozen massive nets soaked in heavy-duty adhesive came crashing down over them. "Shit! It's an ambush!" The men in black were stuck to the nets, and the more they struggled, the tighter they were glued. In no time, they quickly rolled into a tangled heap Natalie emerged from the study. Realizing that things were going south, she turned around to flee. Yet, she had onl

Everett scooped me up in his arms, his eyes red from the adrenaline and relief. "Way to go, kiddo! You sure are full of surprises. I can't believe you actually know how to swim! You almost gave your older brother a heart attack just now!"He patted his chest and grinned. "From now on, just stick with me. I'll protect you!"I used my chubby little hand to push away his face with pure disdain. "Everett… dumb. I have… bodyguards!"I rolled my eyes inside my head. [You want me to stick with you? With that simple, smooth brain of yours, who knows who'll be looking out for whom down the road?Exhausted and completely drained, Ethan and Elliot headed upstairs. Evan and Ezra, despite simmering with resentment, could only slink back to their rooms under Mom's scathing glare. Elias, on the other hand, sat in despair inside his utterly hollowed-out bedroom, staring blankly at a dead wall outlet. After Natalie was sent away, the Fairchild residence finally quieted down. Still, I kept my wits

"Hold it right there!" Natalie was about to be dragged out of the courtyard when a furious roar boomed like a sudden clap of thunder. My father, Elijah Fairchild, stormed into the courtyard. His expression was hardened as he shoved away the bodyguards, who were holding Natalie, and shielded her behind him. Mom's gaze darkened. "What's the meaning of this, Elijah? Are you trying to cover up for a murderer?"Dad looked at me, who was completely drenched from head to toe, and a flicker of guilt flashed through his eyes. Ultimately, though, he gritted out, "I'm aware that Nat made a mistake, but we absolutely cannot call the cops. She cannot end up with a criminal record!""Are you out of your mind?" Mom stared at him in utter disbelief. Dad let out a heavy sigh and closed his eyes. His voice was thick with sorrow as he admitted, "Nat... Her father, Caleb, is my childhood friend and, even more so, my brother-in-arms. If he hadn't thrown himself in front of that rogue truck to save

I sneered inwardly, "This sucker's about to be fooled again."As expected, Ethan looked down at Natalie, who was crying like she was about to pass out, and a conflicted look flashed across his eyes. In the face of ironclad evidence, his belief in Natalie being "pure and harmless" had completely collapsed; all that remained was disappointment. Yet, he still reached out and grasped Damian's hand, stopping him from using his phone. "Hold on… If you call the cops, the scandal of our family's heiress attempting to murder Nev will make headlines. The company's stock price will crash…"Emerson also frowned, analyzing the situation rationally. "Ethan's right. This concerns our family's reputation. Don't act rashly." But the way they looked at Natalie had already gone cold. Still, there were always a few who seemed to be missing a brain stem. Evan and Ezra, who had just returned, rushed over at that moment. Evan immediately shielded Natalie behind him, tenderly wiping away her tears bef

Dead silence fell over the courtyard. The wind blew over the pool, creating ripples on the water, but it did nothing to mask the collective gasp that echoed through the air. Everyone looked as if they had been turned to stone, their eyes glued to my dripping-wet figure as I stood there, utterly unfazed, by the edge of the pool. Natalie's wailing ground to a screeching halt, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "Y-You're okay?" Ethan pointed at me with a trembling finger.I wrung out the dripping hem of my dress in disgust. "Damian, stop playing dead. Get up and get to work!" Damian, who had been lying on the ground unconscious just moments ago, slowly rose to his feet. He pulled out a digital tablet and handed it to me. I accepted it and clumsily jabbed at the screen, forcing out a taunt. "Pushing me… into this little bit of water... won't drown me!"However, deep down, I had already rolled my eyes all the way to the back of my head. [I can't believe she tried to drown me in
