POV BRIAR

The climb toward Drakor’s heights was a journey wrapped in mist and untouched snow. Behind me lay the fertile, tamed valleys of Silvercrest, where I had grown up believing submission was the same as peace. Up here, the air cut like blades of solid ice, yet I barely felt the wind’s bite. Malakar’s broad back stood as an unbreachable shield against the gale tearing through the pass, and his heat — that steady, living furnace of pure lycan blood — folded around me in a warm bubble that felt as safe as it was addictive.

My hands curled into the edges of his bear-lined cloak, seeking steady purchase with every jolt. Each time his great warhorse cleared a jagged crack in the rock, the King’s chest pressed firm against my shoulder blades, and a low, thrumming vibration rumbled deep within him. It was his wolf, awake, watchful, standing guard over me with a quiet possessiveness that raised gooseflesh along my skin.

"Stop holding your shoulders so tight," Malakar said suddenly, his warm breath brushing the curve of my ear beneath the wind’s roar. "Your body is heavy with exhaustion, Briar. If you force yourself alert every step of the way, you will collapse before we cross the first moat."

"I have never learned to lower my guard," I answered, fighting the urge to rest my head against his back even as every muscle in my neck begged to let go. "Least of all in lands I was raised to fear as enemy ground."

Malakar rumbled a low, rough laugh that shook through his ribs and straight into mine.

"This is not enemy ground for you," he said, firm and sure. "Not since the moment my fangs knew your scent and my beast recognized what is his. This is your home now. And you would do well to start walking as one who holds this land, not one who flees it."

Before I could frame a reply, the narrow rocky path opened onto a colossal plateau, and the sight stole my breath away.

Rising from the heart of a mountain split apart in some ancient cataclysm stood the Obsidian Fortress. It was not built upon rock, it was carved from the mountain itself — angular towers of black volcanic stone reaching skyward like the fangs of a sleeping giant. Thousands of blue-flamed torches burned along its cyclopean walls, defying the blizzard and gilding the snow with ghostly light. Warwolves the size of horses patrolled the drawbridges in silence, their armor gleaming beneath the thin glow of the moon breaking through cloud.

A deep horn sounded once from the highest tower — one resonant note that announced the King’s return.

Great iron gates groaned upward, the metal screech echoing down surrounding chasms. Malakar guided his stallion into the courtyard, where hundreds of warriors, armored officers, and servants stood in perfect, disciplined rows. Every last one of them dropped to one knee in slush and snow as we passed, heads bowed low in absolute submission.

Yet as we rode forward, I felt the weight of sidelong glances — quick, uncertain, curious. To them I was something out of place, a stranger soaked and mud-streaked, face still bruised, riding behind a King who had never shared his mount with anyone.

Malakar reined to a halt at the palace’s main staircase. He dismounted with effortless, imposing grace, and before I could try to climb down alone, gloved hands settled firm around my waist. He lifted me clear of the ground as easily as lifting a feather and set me gently upon the stone flags.

My legs, numb from the ride, wavered beneath me. I stumbled, but his arm caught me before I could fall, bracing steady around my side, holding me close.

"Hold your head high," he murmured against my temple, his tone threaded with fierce, unyielding pride. "You are the Queen of Drakor. No one here has the right to look down on you."

I swallowed, straightened my spine, and kept my gaze forward.

Waiting at the top of the steps stood a stern welcoming party. At their head was a woman with silver hair braided into a crown, dressed in long crimson velvet that barely concealed the hilts of twin daggers at her waist. She had sharp, aristocratic features and grey eyes that locked onto me cold as glacial ice. Beside her stood a stooped elder robed in ceremonial white wool, holding a gnarled wooden staff, his brow deeply furrowed as though something troubled him greatly.

"I see the expedition to Silvercrest was… productive, Your Majesty," the woman in scarlet said. Her voice was polished silk, courteous on the surface yet dripping with quiet disdain. "Though the Clan Council expected wagons heavy with gold tribute and grain, not a common female plucked from border mud."

Silence crashed over the courtyard instantly, heavy and lethal. Soldiers held their breath.

I felt Malakar’s arm tense beneath his cloak. He stepped forward, keeping me close at his side, not yielding an inch.

"Lady Vane," the King said — his voice did not rise, yet his presence settled over her like an avalanche. "If you ever again refer to my mate as 'common,' I will have your tongue cut out and nailed above this gate so the crows may feed upon your insolence."

The woman blanched, her haughty composure shattering. She stumbled back a step, head bowing, teeth clenched in forced humiliation.

"F-forgive me, my Lord… I did not mean to question the Crown’s judgment," she stammered, swallowing her venom.

"There will be no second warnings," Malakar declared, his golden gaze sweeping the assembly with such heat none dared blink. "Briar is your Queen. Whoever doubts her authority answers to me in the blood pit."

At that, the elder with the staff shuffled trembling toward us. He stopped several paces away, breathing deeply, nostrils flaring, milky eyes fixed intently upon my throat.

"Master Elian," Malakar rumbled, tone restrained yet no less dangerous. "What do you seek?"

The healer did not answer at once. He raised a gnarled hand, asking silence with reverent gesture, and closed his eyes as though listening to currents unseen. When he opened them again, his expression held awe bordering on alarm.

"Your Majesty… bring her into the torchlight," the old man entreated, voice trembling. "Please, let me examine the lady’s life-flow. It is urgent."

Malakar guided me beneath the flickering blue flame. The healer extended thin, bony fingers toward the left side of my neck, brushing skin just above the pulse. At his touch, cold needles of silver fire lanced through me, and I gasped.

"That is enough!" Malakar snapped, striking the elder’s hand away. "You hurt her."

"It is not my touch that pains her, my King," Elian said, voice breaking with shock. "It is the poison in her blood. The reports from Silvercrest lied — her wolf is not weak, she is not flawed. Her spirit core is chained."

A cold knot tightened in my stomach. I stepped forward, ignoring the lingering ache.

"Chained?" My voice came hoarse, barely audible. "What does that mean?"

Master Elian looked at me with compassion and reverence tangled together.

"For years, she has been given belladonna root and silver aconite ash, meted out in small, steady doses," he said gently. "And over her lunar gland… a seal of dark submission has been carved into her very flesh. Whoever held her as Alpha sought to silence her wolf, to hollow her out, to strip her of will and leave her nothing but a servant. They were unmaking her, slowly, from the marrow outward."

The world seemed to still around me.

Memories flooded in sharp and cruel — the bitter tea my mother pressed upon me every morning, saying it calmed my nerves; the oils Garrick rubbed into my neck, claiming it was an Alpha’s care for his future mate; the way my own inner voice had grown fainter, quieter, until I thought it was gone forever.

They were not caring for me. They were destroying me. They were terrified of what I might become.

Malakar’s arm locked around my waist with desperate, unyielding force. His eyes burned not golden, but pure living fire. The fury pouring from him was so immense the blue torches sputtered, flickering as if the air itself shook with his rage.

"Can the seal be broken?" he asked, his tone cold as frost, promising rivers of blood.

"It can, Sire," Elian nodded, grave and urgent. "But the ritual within the Fire Sanctuary will be agony. To shatter years of binding requires you pour your own power into her, to sustain her through the shock lest it tear her apart."

Malakar turned to me, cupping my face between gloved hands with infinite tenderness, contrasting sharply with the storm raging within him.

"Prepare the sacred baths at once," he commanded, never breaking eye contact. "Tonight, Briar, we set your true wolf free. And I swear upon the bones of my ancestors — Garrick, your mother, every soul who fed you poison — they will pay for every drop with oceans of their own blood."

  • Swapping My Cheating Alpha for the Lycan King   The Coward's Letter

POV BRIARThere are men who would sooner burn an entire kingdom to the ground than admit a woman walked out on them and left them looking foolish. Garrick was exactly that kind of man.The tense murmur of guards in the outer courtyard drifted softly through the north tower windows. I did not need to look outside to know who waited below. I could smell him. The stench of false courtesy and cheap Silvercrest cologne hung on the night breeze, sharp and unmistakable. For the first time in years, my senses were clear — no fog, no dullness, no poison clouding what I knew deep down. What I smelled was pathetic desperation.Malakar stood by the fireplace, fastening the leather straps of his combat bracers with a calm that sent shivers down my spine. He wore only a loose dark linen shirt, yet the heat rolling off him filled the room, steady and grounding."Stay here," he said without turning around, pulling the last buckle tight. "He is nothing but a cheap messenger. I will cut off his hands,

POV BRIARTo tear poison rooted deep in the soul hurts a thousand times worse than taking a silver bullet to the chest. It is not a pain that fades with a scream, it feels as though you are being unmade from the inside, layer by layer, never quite knowing where the wound ends and your own essence begins. The sacred baths within the fortress were no luxury spa, they were a ceremonial basin carved straight from volcanic rock, where water bubbled hot, thick with sulfur, crushed quartz, and the earth’s own deep warmth. Pillars of thick steam twisted toward the vaulted ceiling, lit only by the glowing embers of four wrought-iron braziers set in a ring. The air smelled of minerals and something ancient, thrumming, that made the very atmosphere hum.Master Elian poured the contents of three dark glass vials into the pool. The clear water turned murky violet and began to hiss, tiny sparks of static electricity dancing across the surface."Strip away your clothing, my Queen," the old healer sa

POV BRIARThat word was not spoken, it was torn from the very depths of a beast that had walked in shadows for centuries. It was no human sound, nor even the growl of an ordinary wolf, it was the voice of ancient authority itself, resonating in every bone within me like a decree carved in stone since the beginning of time."MINE."The soaked earth beneath my car tires shook in perfect time with that roar. The shockwave did not just rattle the rain-fogged glass, it struck me full in the chest, shattering the shell of ice I had built to shield myself barely an hour before, when I fled the manor leaving my veil and the betrayal behind. That armor I had forged to keep from falling apart broke all at once, and in its place something stirred I had thought lost forever. The wolf inside me, that part of myself everyone — including me — had given up for dead, broken, unable to raise its voice, twisted in my ribs with frantic urgency. It was not trembling with fear. It was not shrinking into th

  • Swapping My Cheating Alpha for the Lycan King   The Scent in My Sheets

POV BRIARThey say a wolf’s sense of smell never lies, "that it can track a trail days after it was left, distinguish fear from desire, loyalty from deceit, all in a single breath of air." But no teaching, "no pack law," nothing prepares you for the moment your own home — the place where you thought you were safe, where you dreamed of waking every morning — greets you with the thick, "sickening scent of betrayal."I walked beneath a downpour that seemed meant to wash the whole world clean, pressing the ivory satin box to my chest as if it were my own heart. I took care that not a single drop of water touched the edge of the lace. Inside lay my veil, "sixty hours of hand stitching, thread by thread, every pattern chosen with hope, designed for the ceremony where, just three days from now, I would become the companion, the Luna, to the future Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack." The dressmaker had finished early, "and in a foolish burst of joy, eager to share it with him," I drove back to th
