"Yannie? Are you okay? Did you chat with them?" Veron bombarded me with questions, but before she could glance at my phone, I quickly backed away.

"Uhm... he messaged me," I struggled to tell Veron.

"Huh? Really? Where is he?" Veron asked me again.

"Uhm... he said he won't be able to make it. There's some... emergency at home, that's why... and since it's an emergency, he only had time now to make a call and chat with me." I tried hard to keep my voice steady and sound normal.

"Why? What kind of emergency is that? Is he okay?" Veron asked with disappointment.

"He mentioned there's a... family emergency, that's all... and he's okay now," I forced myself to swallow the lies to cover up for Josh with my friend.
