Chapter 1

After replying to my professor, Gary Massey, I looked up and realized everyone in the room was staring at me.

They were all waiting for my reaction, but I knew there was no point in continuing this dinner. Still, before I left, I needed one answer.

"When did you and Lana have a child?" I asked Patrick Underwood, my fiancé.

Patrick froze for a moment. After shooting Lana Rowe a quick glance, he replied coldly, "September 2023."

My heart sank. That was three years ago, in the fall.

Back then, Patrick's father, Alfred Underwood, developed a heart condition and needed surgery in the state capital.

Patrick couldn't get away, and the stress kept him up every night. He even told me he wished he could split himself in half just to be in two places at once.

I patted his shoulder. "You have me. I'll stay with Mr. Underwood through the surgery."

That very night, I took on a new online project at the company. It allowed me to work remotely, but I had to work at least 15 hours a day.

For over six months, I spent my days caring for Mr. Underwood in the hospital and my nights completing my online assignments. I handled everything myself, so much so that even the doctors assumed I was Mr. Underwood's daughter.

Every time I video-called Patrick, he told me he was too busy running the store to visit us. I always assured him that I had everything at the hospital under control.

Only today did I learn that, all that time, he had been caring for a pregnant Lana, the woman carrying his child.

I let out a bitter laugh and asked him, "So, while I was staying with Mr. Underwood through his surgery, you were having a child with another woman?"

The entire table fell silent for a moment.

Mr. Underwood slammed his fork onto the table. "Agnes Denton, watch your attitude! What gives you the right to question Patrick? As a younger member of the family, you were entrusted with taking care of me during my surgery.

"That was our family's way of acknowledging and testing you. It has absolutely nothing to do with Patrick having a child with Lana, so stop lumping the two together!

"Lana and Patrick grew up together, and Patrick only made this decision because he couldn't bear to see her grow old alone. You should consider yourself lucky to have such a kind-hearted husband.

"Besides, their son, Douglas Underwood, is an adorable little boy. Having such a godson is a blessing in itself. I've already sent someone to bring Douglas here for this Thanksgiving dinner. You can all get to know each other today."

No sooner had he finished speaking than the living room door swung open, and Patrick's mother, Caroline Berg, walked in with a three-year-old boy.

The moment the little boy entered, he ran straight toward Patrick and Lana.

"Daddy! Mommy!" he called out with a smile.

Patrick bent down and scooped him up. Standing beside them, Lana reached out and affectionately tapped his nose.

They truly looked like a loving, happy family.

I gritted my teeth and was about to turn to my younger brother, Isaac Denton, and tell him we were leaving when Douglas suddenly addressed him.

"Uncle Isaac, I've finished all the gummies you bought me last time. When are you taking me to get more?"

We moved to a small seaside town overseas. Our house had a little courtyard with a lemon tree growing in the middle. Bradley liked to sit beneath it and read while I made him coffee nearby. The coffee came from Dad. He'd sent it to us, saying it was grown by the family of one of his students in Fulaware. Whenever I brought Bradley his coffee, he would look up at me with a bright, sunny smile that crinkled his eyes.I started my own company here, earning a steady income without having to work around the clock like I used to. Meanwhile, Bradley taught at a nearby college. Our life was incredibly simple, but we were happy and at peace. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking pictures by the sea.The old man held up his phone while his wife posed for him, and the two of them dissolved into laughter."Do you think we'll be like that someday?" Bradley suddenly asked me.I squeezed his hand. "Definitely.""Agnes, do you ever regret leaving?"I tho

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Bradley frowned and started to step forward, but I gently pressed a hand against his arm. Then, I pulled free of Patrick's grip and took half a step back. When Patrick saw that I wasn't reacting, he began shouting at the top of his lungs, "Everyone, come and look! This woman was with me for three years, and now that she's found a rich man to latch onto, she's running off overseas!"I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old son, and she can't even be bothered to ask how they're doing! Tell me, everyone, how can someone be this heartless?"More and more travelers gathered around us.A middle-aged woman planted her hands on her hips. "She's so obsessed with money that she'd even abandon her own child! What kind of person does that?""Exactly! She already has a child and she still wants to run away? Someone should expose her!"Bradley stepped forward and raised his voice."Everyone, don't just take Patrick's word f

"When Dad passed away, I promised him I would take good care of you, and I kept that promise. But from now on, you're on your own."Isaac started to panic. "Agnes, don't do this! I was wrong! I really know I messed up! Please just forgive me this once—I'll do whatever you say from now on!"I shook my head, even though he couldn't see me. "It's too late, Isaac. When you handed Douglas a gummy at Thanksgiving dinner, did it ever cross your mind that I was your sister?"I hung up and blocked his number too.Bradley hadn't said a word the entire time. He sat quietly beside me, peeling an apple. When he finished, he handed it to me."Have a bite—it's really sweet. Tomorrow, we'll go to the supermarket to pick up some essentials. The day after that, we'll fly overseas to see our new home."I nodded, then took the apple and bit into it. He was right—it was really sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened with emotion.Bradley didn't ask if I was sad. Instead, he simply leaned over and re

I stared at Patrick's name on the screen but didn't answer.Bradley glanced at me. "You can pick up and clear things up with him if you want."I shook my head. "I don't want to take his calls because there's nothing to say."I declined his call, but Patrick refused to give up. He called seven times in a row before I finally had no choice but to answer.Patrick immediately shouted, "Agnes, where's Dad's medication? You haven't delivered this month's supply yet. What the hell are you playing at?"I held my phone, saying nothing. My silence only made Patrick angrier."Cat got your tongue? Listen, if you come over right now with the medication and pay for the next round of treatment, I'll pretend none of this ever happened. Do you hear me?"I took a deep breath and replied, "Patrick, I'm already married. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, so I have no reason to be responsible for your father's medication."There was a brief silence on the other end before Patrick explo

Bradley draped an arm around my shoulders, then looked Patrick and Lana up and down."Who are you, people? What gives you the right to tell my wife to get lost?" he asked with a frown."Wife?" Patrick repeated, then turned to me, shocked and furious. "Agnes, who is he?"Before I could answer, Bradley pulled out our marriage certificate and held it up to Patrick."I'm her husband. We just registered our marriage today."Patrick's face drained of color instantly, while Lana stood frozen in shock.More and more onlookers gathered around us, eager to see what would happen next."Agnes, y-you got married?" Patrick asked in disbelief. "We haven't even broken up yet, and you've already gone and registered your marriage to another man? Have you no shame?"Lana quickly chimed in, "Agnes, you're still with Patrick, yet you've already married another man? If that's not cheating, then what is? Everyone, look at this shameless woman! She's married another man without even breaking off her e

Patrick looked surprised."You really have no objections? You're not angry?" he asked."Not at all," I replied. "No one wants their own child to be called a bastard."He nodded in relief. "I'm glad you can see reason. We can still have the wedding ceremony. In everyone else's eyes, you and I will still be husband and wife. It doesn't matter whose name is on the marriage certificate."I nodded without saying a word.Patrick continued, "There's one more thing. Raising a child is incredibly demanding these days, and I'm already exhausted just taking care of Douglas. So, after we get married, let's not have any children of our own."Instead, you'll raise Douglas as if he were your own son. He's smart and has great potential. We'll leave all our assets to him, and I'm sure he'll take care of you when you're old."Without the slightest hesitation, I nodded and said, "Okay."Patrick paused, his brows drawing together slightly as a flicker of unease crossed his eyes."Why are you bein
