Chapter 2

Autor: Pretty Handsome
I froze in place, glaring at Isaac. I never imagined he knew all along and had joined everyone else in keeping it from me.

Isaac glanced at me, a flicker of guilt flashing in his eyes. But just as quickly, he broke into a smile. He then took a piece of gummy from his bag and handed it to Douglas before turning to me.

"Agnes, Douglas is the most well-behaved child I've ever met. Lana has better genes than you, so you should be grateful to have a godson like Douglas."

Grateful? I let out a cold laugh.

I was only 15 years old when our parents passed away, but I gritted my teeth and did everything I could to raise Isaac. He was the only family I had left, so I devoted myself to giving him the best of everything.

I put him through school, supported him until he graduated, and even got him a job. Yet now, he was telling me to put up with Patrick's infidelity and be grateful for having a godson like Douglas.

My phone buzzed. Professor Massey had just sent me a message.

"I've arranged jobs for you both overseas after the wedding. Send me your personal details again. Do you have any family members?"

I replied, "No. I'm an orphan."

After sending the message, I glanced at Isaac again.

I was done with him. He was no longer my brother.

I got to my feet, intending to leave. But the moment I stood up, Patrick stepped in front of me.

"What are you doing?" he muttered unhappily. "Is this really worth getting so worked up over? Dad has always thought you were sensible and understanding—do you really want to upset him by acting like this? He has a heart condition, so you'd better not cause a scene at Thanksgiving dinner."

I shot Patrick a puzzled look. "I'm the one making a scene?"

He furrowed his brows and let out a sigh. "Fine, I admit I handled this badly. I should've told you beforehand. I'm sorry, okay? I know this might be hard for you to accept.

"But we're registering our marriage in three days, and then I'll be entirely yours. Do you really have to hold it against Lana, who doesn't even believe in marriage, just because of a child?"

I looked around the table at everyone present—my fiancé of six years, the future parents-in-law I had treated like my own parents, and the younger brother I had raised.

Every single one of them had kept Douglas from me. And now that the truth was out, they looked at me not with guilt, but irritation. They were annoyed that I couldn't accept the situation as happily as they did.

I took a deep breath and looked at the big, happy family gathered around me. Suddenly, I felt too exhausted to even pretend I wanted to be part of them.

I smiled and said, "Douglas is indeed a lovely child, but he isn't mine. You all enjoy being a family. I'll be taking my leave."

The moment I turned around, Patrick shouted after me, "Agnes, stop right there!"

Mr. Underwood slammed his hand against the table. "Let her go. She's getting far too full of herself. How dare she make a scene at our Thanksgiving dinner?"

Patrick chased after me anyway. He grabbed me by the wrist, but I yanked my hand free.

Suddenly, Douglas came charging at me from behind.

"Don't touch my daddy, you meanie!" he screamed through his tears as he pounded his little fists against my legs.

I instinctively shifted to the side. Douglas lost his balance and landed hard on his bottom.

In an instant, the room erupted into chaos.

Patrick glared at me and roared, "Agnes, have you no shame? How could you hurt a three-year-old child?"

Lana scooped Douglas up from the floor and shot me a venomous glare.

"If you have a problem, take it up with me! Leave Douglas out of it!"

Mr. Underwood was shaking with rage as he jabbed a finger at my face and bellowed, "Get out! Get out right now! I was blind to ever consider letting Patrick marry you!"

Even Isaac joined in. "Agnes, what you did was downright cruel!"

"I didn't hit him." I merely tried to defend myself, but Lana immediately slapped me across the face.

She hit me so hard that I tasted blood in my mouth.

"How dare you keep making excuses?" she screamed. "If you didn't hit Douglas, are you seriously telling me he just fell on his own?"

We moved to a small seaside town overseas. Our house had a little courtyard with a lemon tree growing in the middle. Bradley liked to sit beneath it and read while I made him coffee nearby. The coffee came from Dad. He'd sent it to us, saying it was grown by the family of one of his students in Fulaware. Whenever I brought Bradley his coffee, he would look up at me with a bright, sunny smile that crinkled his eyes.I started my own company here, earning a steady income without having to work around the clock like I used to. Meanwhile, Bradley taught at a nearby college. Our life was incredibly simple, but we were happy and at peace. One evening, while we were out for a walk, we saw an elderly couple taking pictures by the sea.The old man held up his phone while his wife posed for him, and the two of them dissolved into laughter."Do you think we'll be like that someday?" Bradley suddenly asked me.I squeezed his hand. "Definitely.""Agnes, do you ever regret leaving?"I tho

People around us stopped in their tracks to watch.Bradley frowned and started to step forward, but I gently pressed a hand against his arm. Then, I pulled free of Patrick's grip and took half a step back. When Patrick saw that I wasn't reacting, he began shouting at the top of his lungs, "Everyone, come and look! This woman was with me for three years, and now that she's found a rich man to latch onto, she's running off overseas!"I have a seriously ill father at home and a three-year-old son, and she can't even be bothered to ask how they're doing! Tell me, everyone, how can someone be this heartless?"More and more travelers gathered around us.A middle-aged woman planted her hands on her hips. "She's so obsessed with money that she'd even abandon her own child! What kind of person does that?""Exactly! She already has a child and she still wants to run away? Someone should expose her!"Bradley stepped forward and raised his voice."Everyone, don't just take Patrick's word f

"When Dad passed away, I promised him I would take good care of you, and I kept that promise. But from now on, you're on your own."Isaac started to panic. "Agnes, don't do this! I was wrong! I really know I messed up! Please just forgive me this once—I'll do whatever you say from now on!"I shook my head, even though he couldn't see me. "It's too late, Isaac. When you handed Douglas a gummy at Thanksgiving dinner, did it ever cross your mind that I was your sister?"I hung up and blocked his number too.Bradley hadn't said a word the entire time. He sat quietly beside me, peeling an apple. When he finished, he handed it to me."Have a bite—it's really sweet. Tomorrow, we'll go to the supermarket to pick up some essentials. The day after that, we'll fly overseas to see our new home."I nodded, then took the apple and bit into it. He was right—it was really sweet. As I chewed, my throat tightened with emotion.Bradley didn't ask if I was sad. Instead, he simply leaned over and re

I stared at Patrick's name on the screen but didn't answer.Bradley glanced at me. "You can pick up and clear things up with him if you want."I shook my head. "I don't want to take his calls because there's nothing to say."I declined his call, but Patrick refused to give up. He called seven times in a row before I finally had no choice but to answer.Patrick immediately shouted, "Agnes, where's Dad's medication? You haven't delivered this month's supply yet. What the hell are you playing at?"I held my phone, saying nothing. My silence only made Patrick angrier."Cat got your tongue? Listen, if you come over right now with the medication and pay for the next round of treatment, I'll pretend none of this ever happened. Do you hear me?"I took a deep breath and replied, "Patrick, I'm already married. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, so I have no reason to be responsible for your father's medication."There was a brief silence on the other end before Patrick explo

Bradley draped an arm around my shoulders, then looked Patrick and Lana up and down."Who are you, people? What gives you the right to tell my wife to get lost?" he asked with a frown."Wife?" Patrick repeated, then turned to me, shocked and furious. "Agnes, who is he?"Before I could answer, Bradley pulled out our marriage certificate and held it up to Patrick."I'm her husband. We just registered our marriage today."Patrick's face drained of color instantly, while Lana stood frozen in shock.More and more onlookers gathered around us, eager to see what would happen next."Agnes, y-you got married?" Patrick asked in disbelief. "We haven't even broken up yet, and you've already gone and registered your marriage to another man? Have you no shame?"Lana quickly chimed in, "Agnes, you're still with Patrick, yet you've already married another man? If that's not cheating, then what is? Everyone, look at this shameless woman! She's married another man without even breaking off her e

Patrick looked surprised."You really have no objections? You're not angry?" he asked."Not at all," I replied. "No one wants their own child to be called a bastard."He nodded in relief. "I'm glad you can see reason. We can still have the wedding ceremony. In everyone else's eyes, you and I will still be husband and wife. It doesn't matter whose name is on the marriage certificate."I nodded without saying a word.Patrick continued, "There's one more thing. Raising a child is incredibly demanding these days, and I'm already exhausted just taking care of Douglas. So, after we get married, let's not have any children of our own."Instead, you'll raise Douglas as if he were your own son. He's smart and has great potential. We'll leave all our assets to him, and I'm sure he'll take care of you when you're old."Without the slightest hesitation, I nodded and said, "Okay."Patrick paused, his brows drawing together slightly as a flicker of unease crossed his eyes."Why are you bein
