~ Avelyn ~

The maids weren’t joking when they said “master only sees the best.” Because why else would I be squeezed into a black laced dress just to have dinner.

Frankly speaking, I doubt I’d do much eating with his goddamn corset twisting my intestines. I mean, this isn’t the medieval era for Christ sake!

Still, I didn’t dare groan. On the outside I was as cool as a cucumber watching the kitchen staff set the table while I sat across from him. At the very least, this table wasn’t like the tea setting in the greenhouse. This was more elaborate, which meant farther distance from him. Great.

Soon after the staffs disappeared, leaving me in the suffocating tension. I bet even my breathing could be heard. But he didn’t speak and began eating.

The sound of cutlery against ceramic subtly reached my ears. But I couldn’t eat, and it wasn’t because of the dress, no, I fondled with my knife while I spiraled in my thoughts.

I wanted to ask what they talked about. Kyle wasn’t gonna tell me,

~ Avelyn ~The descent to the bowl of water came next. It was deliberate. The technicians lowered me slowly so that when I released the pole I entered the air like something sliding off a blade. The water bowl waited like a stage prop enlarged into reality revealing a transparent, semi-circular basin large enough for a person to be entirely submerged beneath and yet visible from every seat. The lights under it glowed faintly, and a murmur moved through the crowd as my dress hit the water and the red began to bleed and smear into the clear.Underwater, everything was muffled and strange. Sound turned to a pressure I couldn’t parse. My lashes fanned like small black wings. The red clouded up around me, but then, because of the choreography and because of the precise temperature and density of the liquid they had used, the color sank fast. I moved slowly, floating, body loose and limber and completely under control. Time dilated. In that silence, the panic pressed against my ribcage li

~ Avelyn ~For a second I honestly thought my knees were going to give out. My brain kept trying to rearrange her words into something less horrific, something that didn’t make me feel like I’d been walking around stupid and blind this entire time. Xander set up Kyle? Ari? The club? The dancer? My “rescue”??No. No, she was lying. She had to be lying. This was Veronica. This was what she did.But the denial didn’t settle. It just sat there, thin and flimsy, like tissue paper in a fire.I couldn’t breathe right. My chest felt tight, like there wasn’t enough air in the room anymore. And the worst part? My body kept moving anyway. I grabbed the rail backstage. I stepped toward the curtains. I adjusted my outfit. All normal, all routine.Meanwhile my mind was… nowhere. It was jammed, static. Just one long, buzzing panic that made my hands shake even though I kept curling them into fists behind my back.“Five minutes, Mistress Avelyn,” someone said.Mistress.God. The word almost made me

~ Avelyn ~The way she said it wasn’t even loud—just casual, like talking about the weather.“Tell me, how was it like being fucked by Xander?”My brain lagged. That wasn’t curiosity, this was a knife disguised as a compliment.I didn’t rise to the bait. My voice came out low, flat.“What do you want?”She didn’t answer immediately. Veronica circled the chair like she was inspecting a product she’d already decided to return. She didn’t even bother to look at me. She looked at my reflection, at the crystals, at the hair, at the body they’d polished until I looked like a diamond someone was preparing to auction again. Then she laughed under her breath, that smug little half-giggle she always did when she thought she’d found a flaw in your armor.“You must think you won. It’s adorable, really… watching you parade around like you’re untouchable.”She tilted her head, lips curling.“A mere pawn who thinks she’s queen. Soon to be discarded like all the others.”I didn’t care. Not enou

~ Avelyn ~The long awaited event was now staring me in the face, it was time to get ready. I didn’t know where Xander sent me, but the location alone told me it wasn’t anywhere dancers normally went. The car stopped at a side entrance of the Mona Lisa I didn’t even know existed. No signs, no guards shouting names and no girls in glittering costumes swarming around like bees. Just a silent hallway that smelled clean and expensive. The attendant at the door bowed, then pressed a palm to a glass panel. It scanned his hand and a door slid open.“Master Sterling booked the suite,” he said.I followed him because I didn’t have much of a choice. Every step reminded me my thighs were still sore. The bruises on my neck throbbed like someone wrapped fingers there and squeezed until their impression stamped itself permanently on my skin.My body was a walking confession of last night, and still, the world was suddenly treating me like I needed satin gloves and gold forks. The elevator they led

~ Avelyn ~Laura’s laugh was the kind of sound that made my palms itch. Not loud, not sincere—just sharp and loud enough so nearby people would notice.I stared at her in silence for a second, mostly to confirm that yes, she actually had the audacity to be here. She looked exactly the same as she always did at the academy: perfect curls, shiny lips, nose slightly tilted like she was sniffing something unpleasant. Except now she had a man attached to her arm. He was tall, dressed in an expensive suit, and had the bored expression of someone who only existed to pay her bills and stand there like a trophy.Funny how people like her somehow always managed to upgrade their leashes.I gave her a thin smile. “Laura.”“Oh, you remember my name,” she said sweetly, even though her eyes told me she wished I’d died on that auction stage. “I’m surprised. You usually avoid eye contact with people above you.”Wow. We were starting with the insults early. The receptionist shifted awkwardly behind h

The agent was still talking when I walked away. She called after me once, politely at first, then louder—“Miss Avelyn!”—but I didn’t stop. Her words bounced around the foyer like loose marbles, but I didn’t care. The only thing in my head was Xander.Three penthouses.Three.In my name.It wasn’t a gift.It was an insult dressed in luxury. The hallways of the mansion felt deliberately long, like the house was trying to intimidate me. Dark wood, gold trim, art pieces I didn’t recognize. The maids glanced up every time I passed, but no one dared say a word. They had the stiff posture of soldiers guarding a tyrant.I found the study by following the sound of low classical music. Of course he’d be listening to something elegant, something expensive. I raised my knuckles and knocked, once, sharply. No answer. So I opened the door. The sight of him hit me like a slap.He was standing by the window, sunlight cutting across his shoulders, making his shirt look darker, his presence heavier.
