The heavy concrete blast doors of Site Beta sealed behind me with a muffled, pneumatic click, isolating me inside the airlock chamber.

Through the thick, bulletproof observation glass of the mountain crest outpost, the world outside was a hellscape of swirling grey ash and dark violet sky. The ambient temperature out on the ridge had surged past 120 degrees. Without my sealed environmental suit and tactical respirator, the sulfur-laden air would have scorched my lungs in seconds.

I adjusted the grip on my heavy composite crossbow, checking the tension line. A quiver of twenty carbon-steel bolts sat strapped to my thigh, their sharp tips glinting under the dim red emergency lights of the airlock.

【Target Distance: 150 yards. The two pickup trucks have halted near the rocky outcrop. Six hostiles dismounting. They have detected the fresh heavy tire treads left by Titan Construction’s vehicles.】

System Syndicate’s voice resonated in my helmet comms, crisp and tactical, mapping out six bright red thermal signatures on my heads-up display.

"Zoom in on the lead hostile," I commanded silently, keeping my back pressed against the cold granite wall.

The visual display magnified. The leader was a broad, scar-faced man wearing a faded military jacket and a modified industrial gas mask. He carried a high-caliber hunting rifle slung over his shoulder, but what caught my attention was the heavy iron crowbar in his hand and the tactical radio strapped to his chest.

These weren't desperate refugees looking for a bottle of water. They were organized scavengers—scouts for a larger regional gang operating out of the lower valley.

"He's checking the granite face," I observed, watching the scar-faced man run his gloved hand over the hidden seam of the primary blast door.

【Scavenger Leader identified via facial recognition data: Vance 'Grizzly' Miller. Former municipal contractor, currently leader of the 'Valley Iron' raiding faction. Threat Level: Moderate-High. He possesses basic engineering knowledge and understands subterranean bunker entry points.】

"If he goes back to his crew and calls in their main convoy, Site Beta's location is compromised," I said, my voice dropping into a flat, icy register. "We eliminate them here. Quietly."

【A ruthlessly efficient choice, Chairman. Automated defense turrets Alpha and Beta are pre-aimed at the vehicle engines. Shall I trigger the perimeter micro-claymores, or do you prefer hands-on target practice?】

"Keep the turrets on silent backup," I murmured, stepping into the narrow firing position behind the concealed sniper slit carved into the cliffside. "If we blow up their trucks with turrets, the noise will echo across the valley. I'll take out the leader first."

I raised the crossbow, resting the heavy carbon frame against the reinforced sill. The optical sight zoomed in, red reticle centering directly on Grizzly’s neck, right where his gas mask strap met his jacket collar.

The hot, ash-laden wind howled outside, shaking the pines. I took a deep, steady breath, holding it in my chest. My heart rate dropped to a steady sixty beats per minute. In my past life, the sight of a gun would have made me tremble. Now, my fingers were steady as cold iron.

THWIP!

The high-tension string released with a sharp, mechanical snap.

The carbon-steel bolt tore through the swirling curtain of ash, traveling at four hundred feet per second. Before Grizzly could even turn his head, the steel tip punched straight through his throat, pinning him backward against the granite rock face.

He didn't even have time to scream. His boots kicked violently twice against the gravel before his body went completely limp, blood spurting onto the white ash beneath him.

"One down," I whispered, smoothly racking a second bolt into the chamber.

【Hostile Leader eliminated. Hostiles 2 through 6 are experiencing extreme confusion. They have not identified the origin point of the projectile due to ash density.】

Outside, the remaining five scavengers froze in sheer terror.

"Grizzly!" one of them yelled, his voice muffled behind a cheap plastic respirator as he lunged toward the fallen body. "Sniper! Down! Get behind the trucks!"

Panic erupted among them. Two men scrambled behind the hood of the lead pickup, raising their rifles and firing blind bursts into the dark pine trees, their gunshots echoing loudly off the canyon walls.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Muzzle flashes cut through the purple gloom, but their bullets slammed harmlessly into empty tree trunks fifty yards away from my concealed bunker position.

"Fools," I muttered. "System, scramble their tactical radio frequency so they can't broadcast a distress signal."

【Radio frequency jammed. Local transmission blocked within a two-mile radius. They are completely dark, Chairman.】

I shifted my sight to the second hostile—a tall man in a leather vest trying to drag Grizzly's rifle toward the truck bed.

THWIP!

The second bolt struck him dead center in the chest, the kinetic force slamming him backward against the front bumper. He collapsed into the dirt, clutching at his ribs as dark blood pooled around him.

"Target two down," I reported, already pulling the third bolt from my thigh quiver.

The remaining three scavengers completely lost their nerve.

"It's not a sniper in the trees! It's coming from the wall!" one of them screamed, pointing a shaking finger toward the granite cliff. "Fall back! Get in the truck!"

They scrambled for the doors of the second pickup, abandoning their dead leader. The driver threw the vehicle into reverse, tires spinning wildly on the loose gravel as he tried to back down the narrow logging trail.

"They're escaping," I said, my brow furrowing as the truck gained speed.

【Not on my watch,】 System Syndicate interjected, its voice carrying a sudden, vicious spark of dark excitement. 【Deploying Kinetic Spike Traps on lower trail segment.】

CLACK-CLACK-CLACK!

A set of concealed, pneumatic steel spikes burst upward from beneath the gravel trail fifty yards down the mountain. The pickup truck’s rear tires slammed over the spikes at forty miles an hour.

EXPLOSION OF RUBBER!

Both rear tires shredded instantly. The heavy truck swerved violently out of control, its back end swinging off the narrow trail and crashing hard into a massive granite boulder. The engine died with a sickening crunch of twisted metal and hissing radiator steam.

The three surviving men stumbled out of the wrecked cab, dazed, bleeding, and coughing violently as the toxic ash air flooded their broken respirators.

I stepped out from the concealed airlock door into the open storm, my heavy boots crunching on the ash-covered gravel. The extreme heat pressed against my tactical suit like a wall, but the internal cooling unit kept my core temperature stable.

I walked down the trail toward the wrecked truck, the heavy crossbow raised and aimed.

The driver, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, looked up through the haze. Through his cracked mask, his eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated terror as he saw me—a sleek, armored figure stepping out of the burning dust storm like a phantom.

"P-please..." he choked out, raising his bloody hands in surrender. "We... we didn't know anyone lived here! Spare us!"

I stopped ten feet away from him, the steel bolt centered on his chest.

"You brought weapons to my mountain," I said, my voice cold, calm, and amplified through my suit's external speaker. "You came to kill and steal."

"We were just scouting!" he sobbed, sliding down the side of the wrecked truck. "Our main camp... they have three hundred people in the valley! If we don't return, they'll send the heavy armored units!"

【Analysis: Target is telling the truth,】 System Syndicate confirmed in my ear. 【'Valley Iron' faction possesses three hundred members, two armed transport vehicles, and a fortified depot at the regional oil refinery. They pose a long-term threat to Site Beta's operational perimeter.】

"Then they'll come searching for a ghost," I murmured.

THWIP!

I pulled the trigger.

Ten minutes later, the mountain ridge was quiet again.

I stood beside the two idling pickup trucks, holding a remote siphon hose connected to my auxiliary fuel storage. System Syndicate expanded the stasis grid, sweeping over the scavengers' vehicles, siphoning eighty gallons of usable gasoline, three hunting rifles, two crates of ammunition, and four high-capacity radios directly into my spatial inventory.

【Assets secured. Total weapons gained: 3x 7.62mm rifles, 140 rounds ammunition, 80 gal fuel. Scavenger unit completely neutralized. Zero damage to Site Beta perimeter.】

"Clean up the trail," I commanded, turning my back on the wreckage and walking back toward the granite entrance. "Use the automated scraper to bury the tire tracks under fresh ash."

【Understood, Chairman Claire. Flawless tactical victory. I must say, your marksmanship under extreme environmental stress is improving rapidly. I might actually have to start taking you seriously as a warlord.】

I let out a low, breathy laugh beneath my respirator as the heavy blast doors slid open to receive me.

"I'm not a warlord, Syndicate," I said, stepping back inside the pristine, air-conditioned sanctuary of Site Beta. "I'm the Chairman. And this valley belongs to me."

The granite walls of Site Beta hummed with a low, steady vibration as the closed-loop geothermal turbines drew energy from deep within the earth’s crust. Inside the command hub, the air was pristine, chilled to a crisp sixty-five degrees, smelling faintly of clean ozone and pine.I stood in front of the central tactical display, a warm cup of black coffee held between my hands. The dark liquid reflected the ambient blue glow of the monitors. On the main display, three satellite streams—relayed through a high-altitude, hardened receiver dish mounted on the mountain's crest—showed the world above crumbling in real-time.A massive fissure had opened thirty miles south, along the coastal fault line. Columns of superheated magma spewed thousands of feet into the sky, lighting up the darkness in blinding curtains of liquid fire. A colossal wall of dark crimson volcanic ash and pulverized metallic dust was rolling across the state at eighty miles an hour, swallowing highway overpasses, comme

The highway leading out of the city was a graveyard of abandoned vehicles and blinding red taillights. As my clunking hatchback climbed higher into the black-stone hills, the air grew noticeably colder, but the sky above was a terrifying shade of bruised purple and burnt orange. Microscopic grey ash danced across my windshield like dry salt, settling into the cracks of the glass.Behind me, the skyline of the city looked like a dying ember. Power transformers blue-sparked and died in distant neighborhoods, plunging entire blocks into darkness. Emergency sirens wailed continuously, a shrill, helpless chorus echoing off the valley walls.【Environmental Monitor: Atmospheric sulfur density elevated to Stage-2. The air outside tasted like sulfur and dry rust. By three o’clock in the afternoon, the sun was no longer a golden sphere—it was a dull, angry ember bleeding behind a sheet of dark purple smog. Streetlights flickered on early along the industrial bypass, casting long, sickly yellow shadows across the asphalt.People were beginning to panic. On the drive toward my family’s suburban estate, traffic was choked at every intersection. Gas stations had queues stretching three blocks long, drivers blaring their horns and screaming at attendants as rumors of an "offshore volcanic chain eruption" swept through radio broadcasts. They thought it was a temporary environmental disruption. They thought if they filled their tanks and bought a case of bottled water, Monday would come back like normal.I gripped the faded steering wheel of my hatchback, my knuckles white, watching a fight break out between two men near a convenience store entrance over a sack of ice.【Environmental Monitor: Surface am

The morning sun was a pale, sickly yellow disc behind a layer of high-altitude, slate-gray haze. "Barometer's dropping faster than a lead weight, though. My knee's aching like crazy. Something ain't right with the air today."I didn't answer him. I knew what wasn't right.【Environmental Sensor Active: Tropospheric sulfur dioxide levels up by 1.8%.
