JOANA'S POV

A sigh of relief relaxed my shoulders. His manner was odd, yet it didn’t require strength to create an effect on me.

“How long do you intend to stay?” I asked.

“If you’d like, I can leave you alone.”

I said, “No,” hoping I wouldn’t give it too much thought. “It’s fine. I’m not against having someone around.”

He slowly nodded and sat back in his chair. We had a relaxed conversation about work, he didn’t come close and he didn’t say anything really personal. Even so, he was calm. Listening. Offering space.

I didn’t know how much I needed it until I had it.

Another moment later, another knock was heard.

I hadn’t even looked up when the door opened and Caleb walked inside.

I froze.

He was holding a bouquet when he reached me. I love the look of a bouquet that combines white peonies and blue irises. He looked guilty, but he stopped smiling when he caught sight of Clinton sitting right across from me.

Silence.

Tense. Thick. Awkward.

Clinton stood

170 JOANA'S POV The continuous humming of the 3D printer gave me a soothing feeling as I worked on making the final version of my design on my screen. The translucent rendering of the prototype slowly came to life—every curve, every line carefully calculated. The late nights and brainstorming were finally paying off as I watched my vision emerge, and I felt quietly elated. All that peace went away in an instant when my phone gave out its sharp ring. I reached for it absentmindedly, eyes still on the screen. The caller ID read—School Line. My stomach dropped. That was never a good sign. “Hello?” I answered, instantly alert. “Mrs. Joana…” The person's voice sounded strained, urgent. “It’s Mirabel. She fainted at school. An ambulance already took her to Memorial Central Hospital. They said it might be related to a gas leak. Multiple students are affected.” The world around me spun. “What? What gas leak? What are you talking about—” “We don’t have all the details yet.

169 JOANA'S POV It looked like healing, maybe. But it didn’t feel like it. “It’s saying I’m scared,” I whispered. He moved to the side so he could see my face, his voice gentler now. “Of what?” My heart kept beating faster at his closeness. “Of getting this wrong,” I admitted. “This piece… It feels like a reflection of everything I haven’t figured out. About myself. About us. About Caleb.” I expected him to flinch and squeeze his face, but nothing happened. He gave no expression whatsoever. He gave me an open look. He treated me as though I was something he needed to figure out. “You are not going to mess up, Jo.” I moved my head from side to side. “I’m not sure how to finish this piece. For me, it’s... I need to borrow from a deeper place, and I’m not sure I’m there yet. I've never had a creator's block in my entire life.” It was a long time before he said a word. “What if we can give yourselves more time before you finish it?” I stared at him with surprise. “

168 JOANA'S POV Peter and the kids got home from their weekend with Grandma, and nervous butterflies rushed through me. He reached across and gave me his hand in reassurance. “They will get it,” he murmured. I believed him and thus hoped we were safe. The triplets were all gathered in the living room. They were as talkative as ever, with plenty of funny stories and laughter. “Is there a chance that we could talk for a bit?” They settled comfortably, and their alert eyes kept watching me and Caleb. It’s really hard for me to explain this, yet my children need to understand the facts. “We need to tell you something,” Caleb said initially. I inhaled. “So… the thing is, me and your Uncle Caleb were planning to get married, but we've put it on hold.” Mirabel had this funny look on her face. “Wait, you and Uncle Caleb were getting married? “Yes, but not for now, my dear. We’re trying to move slowly so that all decisions are right for you and for us.” Jake moved his

167 JOANA'S POV He stood slowly and walked to where I sat. “Can I… sit beside you?” I nodded, and we stayed quiet for a moment, and then he continued speaking. Do you continue to love him now? He didn’t make it an accusation. Threats can be ruled out. Honest. Wounded. Curious. I paused. I answered in the same honest way. “I find myself not knowing my own feelings from time to time. Yet, I know that living only in the past is not what I want either. I’m at peace with it to a big extent, and I want to keep making progress—with you. Nonetheless, I have to ask that you trust me.” He nodded. “I will put more effort in.” We settled down there together, not speaking, just next to each other. It seemed as if the bouquet was gently separating us much like a delicate treaty. Nothing was expected of them to be perfect or magical. Things can’t be fixed instantly. However, there was a real sincerity. This was enough to go on for him at that moment. --- The next day seemed

165 Joana’s POV Clinton went quietly out of the room, but we didn’t prevent him. After getting up, Caleb sat heavily down again and covered his face with his hands for a little while. I saw the man I loved before—the man, now, that was almost a stranger to me. “I’ve been putting in effort, Joana,” he said quietly. I’ve done my best, but I haven’t managed to escape. A switch inside me broke. I didn’t want our relationship to continue as my arena for emotions. I really cared about him. I did, too. What happens if that love just isn’t strong enough? I began, “We might want to just take a moment and breathe.” I saw him looking up at me, filled with defeat. He didn’t say anything. I walked out of the room, using the side of the chair to help me keep my balance. I felt pain in my head, and my chest was tight. All I could imagine doing was to breathe, to run, to scream. So I walked out. Not one more word was spoken. The hall outside felt dim, yet sunlight came in through
