Bexley’s POV “Both tests were positive,” I told Justin when he answered my call two mornings later. He went quiet, and I pressed my fingers into the edge of the mattress while I waited. “I have an appointment this morning,” I added. “I wanted to ask you something.” “Have you been able to tell Blake?” “No. I still can’t reach him.” “Are you okay?” “I think so. A nurse asked what happened while another cut through his shirt. When we reached another set of doors, a doctor stepped in front of me. “You need to wait here.” “He stopped answering me in the car,” I said. “He hit his head too.” “We’re checking everything. Please let us work.” I let go of the stretcher. Getting him to the hospital was the only thing I could think about in the car. Now he was here, and I had to stand outside while strangers tried to keep him alive. A nurse led me to a desk and asked for his details. Blake’s POV Earlier that same day, Italy Ali’s office still had his jacket hanging behind the door. I stopped beside it on my way out. Someone cleared the papers from his desk, but his reading glasses remained beside the keyboard. I remembered him taking them off during our last video call and rubbing his eyes while he complained about an inventory report. I should have asked him to leave when Lorenzo started making threats. Israel waited in the doorway while I looked at the glasses, then cleared his throat. “The men are ready.” “Has his family been taken care of?” “The arrangements are in place.” I nodded, though there was nothing satisfying about the answer. Chapter 53 Bexley's POV When the timer sounded, I let it ring for a few seconds before I reached for my phone. Then I stood and looked down at the test. There were two lines. I picked up the instructions, though I already knew what they said. I checked the picture beside the positive result, looked at the test again, and pressed my free hand over my mouth. I was pregnant. For a moment, all I could hear was the bathroom fan. I sat down because my legs felt unsteady, holding the test carefully between my fingers. I was going to have Blake’s baby. I looked toward my bedroom, almost expecting someone to be there. The room was empty, my graduation gown still lying across the chair, my diploma folder on the desk. Nothing changed while I waited for the result, but I couldn’t imagine walking back into that room and thinking about my life the same way.
