The shipment report was late. The last file arrived incomplete, so I left the window open on the screen while I waited for the corrected version. Cameron expected it by end of day. If I missed the deadline, he would assume I was too distracted by whoever poisoned Lisa. My coffee had gone cold. I drank it anyway and took a bite of the cake someone left on my desk. The sugar hit my throat the wrong way, so I spit the mouthful into a napkin.

The updated file finally appeared in my inbox.

Cameron POV I woke up with my head feeling off. It wasn't a sharp pain, but a slow pull that made the room feel slightly out of place. I sat up and reached for the arm of the chair beside the bed to lower myself into it, then leaned back and closed my eyes.It didn’t pass. The air felt thick in my chest and my senses dragged behind my movements. I opened my eyes to stare ahead while I waited for the sensation to settle. It refused to line up properly. I had never felt this way before and my body wasn't responding the way it should. Maybe it was just the way I slept. Evangeline had insisted I stay last night because she said she wouldn't sleep if I left. I gave in. Now I sat there trying to steady myself while the walls seemed to shift.I pushed up and walked to the sink. The floor felt uneven. I turned on the tap to let the water run over my hands before splashing it onto my face. The cold hit my skin with a sharp reality, but it didn't fix the delay behind my eyes. I gripped the ed

Lisa POVThe discharge papers were ready, and I couldn't wait to go home. The doctor in charge of my case introduced me to a younger doctor, Harry, who walked into the ward with a breeziness that was not expected of a doctor. He was young enough that it showed in how he moved and how quickly he spoke.“I’ll be taking over your case now that you’re being discharged,” he said. “We’ll keep everything tight from here.”I nodded, but my eyes stayed on him. He didn’t look like the kind of doctor who had seen things go wrong and knew how to carry it. I almost requested my former doctor back.He walked us through the plan.“The baby is stable. That’s the priority. Your vitals are back within range, but we don’t relax yet. You’ll come in again in three days. And if something changes before then, you call me directly or come to me. No delays.”He looked at me after checking my vitals.“How have you been sleeping?”“Fine.”“Any stress spikes? Anxiety, discomfort, anything that feels different fr

Franklin POVNadia sighed when I cupped her face. My thumb brushed the purple mark under her eye.“He doesn't deserve you. He’ll pay for this.”“And I don't deserve you.”The words didn’t sit right. I pulled my hands back.“Don’t say something you’ll take back later.”“I know I've been foolish to think it was about rank. About who stands higher and who doesn’t. I told you I wouldn’t lower myself and I meant it at the time, but look at me now. An alpha did this.”She stepped closer to close the space.“If I’m going to regret anything, it won’t be this. Kiss me.”I pressed a kiss beside the bruise. Our lips met and the softness of hers made me hard. I held the kiss long enough to let the tension leave her shoulders.“My room or yours?"“Mine. My bed is sturdier."I laughed. I didn't plan on taking her rough today.Back in her room, our hands tore at each other's clothes. I peeled her dress off first and stopped to kiss the skin I uncovered. Her bra came next. I kissed the curve of her s

I went through it line by line to fix a mismatch and then checked the data from the top again. I refused to send out work with errors. While I finished the last row of figures, my phone lit up with a hospital notification. I read the preview on the lock screen before completing my sentence. Then I picked up the device to open the message. The update said the baby was stable for now. They were going to keep monitoring Lisa. I scoffed.A stable baby should have been good news, but it felt empty. I
