Isabella POV

The room seemed to shrink around me, and the sight of Desmond standing there brought back everything I had spent years trying to bury. The fear wasn't only for myself anymore. Maverick was in my arms, and I could feel the way his body had gone stiff against mine.

Desmond noticed and chuckled, a sound that carried the satisfaction of a man who enjoyed being feared. He lifted his hands as though trying to soothe a frightened animal.

"You don't have to be afraid of me. It's still me,

Isabella POVThe trial chamber was full. I suspected it was because the Alpha's family was involved. There was no endless arguing over words nobody cared about, no tedious procession of legal formalities. The evidence was presented, and witnesses were heard.I sat beside Wesley and his parents, along with Grandma Cassidy and the others, while witnesses waited behind the designated line.Across the chamber, my father sat with his wife. I barely recognized them. They had both lost weight since the chaos began. Whatever happened to Barbara would leave them without a child, and perhaps that was finally beginning to settle into them.Marcus had already received his sentence. He wasn't a Meridian member, but his connection to the organization and his illegal trade in Meridian substances had been established through the evidence recovered during the investigation. The council sentenced him to thirty years of confinement, along with the stripping of his commercial and pack privileges. Three m

Wesley POVI woke to the sound of my own breathing. For a moment, I didn't understand what felt different. The grass was cold beneath me, damp with morning dew, and the scent of earth filled my lungs. Isabella was curled against me in her wolf form, still asleep. Then I heard him.Our mate is so perfect.I froze. The voice had come from inside me.My wolf.My heart slammed against my ribs.I had spent years reaching for him and finding nothing but silence. Years of feeling him as something distant and broken, something trapped behind a wall I could never cross. Now he was there. We are whole enough to hear each other.I swallowed."Yes. Yes she is."I stared at the ground beneath my paws, stunned by the simplicity of it. I could hear him. He was simply there.I shifted. The change came without pain, without effort. My body reformed into its human shape, and I stared at my hands before shifting again.Wolf.Human.Wolf.Human.I laughed under my breath.I could do it.I could actually

Isabella POVMaverick rushed forward the moment he saw me, his arms reaching for me before he even reached the room. I dropped down and caught him against my chest, holding him so tightly that he squirmed and laughed, the sound nearly bringing me to tears.I buried my face in his hair and breathed him in, letting the warmth of my son settle the part of me that had refused to believe he was truly safe until I had him in my arms."I missed you, Mommy.""I missed you too, baby."I wasn't directly responsible for his kidnapping, but the guilt lingered anyway. Some part of me still whispered that I should have been there.Luna Lisa seemed to read it on my face."You can't carry this as though you caused it, Isabella," she said gently. "The boy was taken because someone chose to hurt you. That wasn't your choice."I looked down at my son as he played with the edge of my sleeve."He might remember.""He might. And we shouldn't pretend what happened wasn't frightening. Children notice more th

Isabella POVWe reached the chapter house at 8:55, five minutes before Barbara was scheduled to be brought in. I spotted her mother near the main hall. She stopped when she saw me.For all the years she had looked at me like a stain her family had been forced to tolerate, she couldn't meet my eyes now. Shame had finally found her face. She looked away, and I did the same, feeling no pity for her.Whatever guilt she carried belonged to her. She had watched what Barbara did to me, allowed it, and found explanations for every cruelty. Gwen had probably never killed anyone herself, but I wouldn't be surprised if she had. I knew enough about that family to stop assuming the worst thing I knew was the worst thing they had done.Shouting came from the corridor before Barbara appeared, daughters escorting her into the field.Barbara fought them every step of the way. Her hair had come loose, her clothes were disordered, and rage twisted her face as she struggled against their grip."You can't

Isabella POVLuna Lisa kept wiping at her face, laughing through the tears as she stared at me, then at Wesley, as though she couldn't decide whether to celebrate or fall apart."Oh, goodness," she whispered. "Oh, my goodness."My limbs had lost their strength, and my head felt light. I could hear people speaking, but their voices seemed to come from somewhere far away. The daughters helped me toward the chapter house while Luna Lisa stayed close, still wiping her tears, and I barely managed to keep my eyes open."I feel strange," I murmured.Grandma Cassidy glanced at me. "You'll be fine."By the time they got me upstairs, I could barely stand. The daughters helped me into a warm bath. Water moved around me, carrying away the dirt and traces of the clearing, but the strange feeling remained."Did I take something from him?" I asked, my voice thick with sleep. "When I marked him?"Grandma Cassidy touched my forehead, then exchanged a look with Luna Lisa."Your body is reacting to the

Isabella POVThe sound that tore through the clearing was nothing like a wolf. It was the sound of something buried alive, finally breaking free.Wesley's wolf stood where Wesley had been, and my mind struggled to make sense of it. This creature was massive, its shoulders rising above every wolf around it. Even from where I stood, I could feel the power rolling off him.My heart jerked with fear.I loved Wesley, but that didn't erase what stood before me.Nothing had prepared me for the sight of his wolf standing free.Desmond shifted too. His wolf was powerful, but beside Wesley, he looked small. Desmond still carried an Alpha's confidence, certain he could win. When he lowered his head and opened his jaws, I knew he meant to attack."Wesley! Fight!"Luna Lisa's voice disappeared beneath the roar.Desmond lunged and Wesley's wolf moved.Wesley had Desmond's wolf pinned beneath him before Desmond could land a single blow. His jaws closed around Desmond's neck. Desmond's body struck th

The wooden floor of the community center felt cold beneath my sandals.“I’ll volunteer.”A girl in the back row let out a loud snort. Beside me, Sasha’s hand clamped onto my wrist, her fingers digging into my skin to pull me back down. I did not look at her. I knew that if I met her eyes, the logic

My father was screwing his secretary when I pushed his office door open. Wet slaps and grunts filled the room as he drove into her against the desk.My mother had spent three hours over the stove, squinting at a recipe she had memorized years ago. LISA POVThe digital numbers on my alarm clock glowed a steady red. I watched them tick by from 5:59 to 6:00. My skin felt cold, and a dull ache rested at the back of my eyes after spending the night awake. I could hear the muffled sound of the television.I headed for the door. The living room was
