"Ma'am would you like some sugar." The maid asked with a smile.
"Yeah, I_"
"No, she doesn't." Christian cut in, glaring at me. "You've put on so much weight already Lucia. You're supposed to start cutting down on sugars and food in general."
Heat climbed up my face at his words.
"I heard being overweight is the major cause of infertility." My mother in law piped up from the other end of the table, shooting me a derisive glance.
I grabbed a glass of water, gulping it down quickly to swallow my bitterness.
"Lucia, dear, did you go to meet doctor Singh?" She continued. "He works wonders for older women who can't get pregnant."
My fingers tightened around the fork, and I suddenly envisioned flying out of my seat and stabbing her. I took a deep breath to tamp down the rage.
I turned to look at my husband, fixing a smile on my face. "I want to go and visit my father today."
He doesn't even spare me a glance. "No."
"What do you mean, no? You know he only has two visiting days a month and I couldn't make it to the last one. Please, Christian, I need to_"
His fists came down on the table, fury etched into the lines of his face. "Enough, Lucia. What you need to do is to be getting ready for the event we have this afternoon."
"But the visit won't take time," I insisted.
"What kind of image do you think it presents hunh? What would everybody think of me if you continued running off to visit the man who scammed me of three billion dollars?" He snarled. "What kind of wife chooses her fraudster father over her husband? Do you just have to embarrass me."
"Christian_"
He doesn't let me speak, his gaze narrowing to slits. "I don't want to hear one more word out of you about that thieving rat. We had a deal, Lucia. Or have you forgotten?"
Bile climbed up my throat at the look on his face.
"Have you? Answer me."
"No. I haven't."
"Then shut the fuck up and eat your food." He snapped. "I'm beginning to think ive gotten the short end of the stick here. After all, I promised to let your father get out of jail after only ten years, even though he was supposed to get a life sentence, and in return, you had to take your place as my perfect wife."
"I'm sorry for bringing my father up." I said.
"I hope that's not what she plans to wear for the opening of the new restaurant." His mother hissed. "That color is awful."
"You heard her, Lucia, go and change. Wear something brighter. It's not a fucking funeral." My husband waved me away, going back to his breakfast.
Rising to my feet with a serene smile, I nodded. "Excuse me then."
As soon as I was out of the room, my smile withered. I hurried up the staircase and to my room, barely making it to the bathroom before the contents of my stomach rise up my throat.
I brushed my mouth and rinsed it out with mouthwash afterward, feeling tears stinging the back of my eyes. There were only fifty days left for my father to come out of prison, which meant, fifty more days of me keeping up this act.
I couldn't wait to be free from Christian. He had forced me into this life, promising glamour and Diamonds, but what I'd gotten was a gilded cage.
Changing my Navy blue dress to a maroon silk one, I reapplied my make up and turned to make my way downstairs. At that moment, something caught my eye in the closet. I moved over to where my husband's coat hung and dipped my hand into the pocket where I spotted a flash of red.
Disgust washed through me as I pulled out the red, lace panties. I knew who it belonged to. My husband's mistress, Juliana. He had done a good job keeping her secret, but I wasn't a fool.
Tossing the underwear into the trash, I made my way downstairs.
"Remember, you have to play by my rules now." I heard my husband saying. "If you dare to go against me, I'll destroy you. You're no longer a fucking kid. If you want a share of the empire, you better be ready to do whatever I say."
I stepped into the room and saw Christian speaking to another man who had his back to me. The man was tall, and had on a tailored suit that moulded across his muscled frame.
"Christian." I said, drawing my husband's attention to me. His gaze swept over me.
"Good." He nodded in approval, making me feel like a child who needed a grown ups help to get dressed. Humiliation swept through me.
At that moment, the visitor turned, blue eyes locking on mine. I felt all the air leave my lungs as familiar gaze swept over me, slower and more appreciatively. While Christian's gaze had made me feel cold, this one set me on fire.
"What are you doing here?" I blurted out in shock. Had my husband set me up? Terror shot up my spine.
"I forgot to mention that Hunter was coming home." My husband said.
Hunter? Did he mean that_ no, it couldn't be. This couldn't be my step son.
I staggered back, but the taller man stepped forward, a smile curving his mouth. "Hello, Lucia."
Lucia.I woke up reaching for warmth that wasn’t there. My hand slid across the sheets to meet nothing but cold fabric, and my eyes opened instantly. The other side of the bed was empty. Neat and untouched. Like Hunter had never been there at all.My chest tightened.I sat up, pulling the sheets higher around myself as my eyes darted to the door like I expected him to be standing there. He wasn’t.“Of course,” I muttered to myself.I reached for my phone immediately and typed without thinking. 'When did you leave the bed?'The message sent and the silence in the room felt louder. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood, wrapping my robe around me as I paced slowly, my mind already spinning. For some reason, I felt anxious and unsettled. My phone buzzed a couple minutes later and I reached for it immediately to see a text from Hunter.Hunter: 'Early. Had to take care of some things. I’ll explain later when I get back. Are you okay?'I exhaled, dropping my shoulders just a li
Hunter."Fuck," I muttered, slamming the car door harder than I meant it to.I dropped into the driver’s seat, throwing my head back as I ran a hand through my hair in frustration.Asher got in on the passenger side and shut the door carefully, clearly much calmer than I was.I started the engine but didn't pull away yet, staring out the window.“That was a dead end,” I said flatly. “We were right there Asher, right there. And he shut the door in our faces.”Asher sighed and leaned back against the seat. “No. That wasn’t a dead end.”I shot him a look. “You heard him. He gave us nothing.”“He gave us the final confirmation we needed,” Asher replied calmly. “Fuck that. We already knew it, plus confirmation doesn’t save James,” I snapped. “Confirmation doesn’t put Christian behind bars.”Asher didn’t show any reaction. “Hunter, listen to me. That man is terrified, he's not pretending. He's genuinely terrified.”“I know,” I said flatly, "and that’s what makes this worse.”I pulled out o
Hunter.“What is it?” I asked, narrowing my eyes as I opened up the laptop. He tapped the screen, bringing up an old newspaper clipping. “Look at this. Former CFO of one of Christian’s paper companies– retired early. Completely disappears from public life after leaving. No interviews, no statements, nothing. He just… vanished.”I frowned. “Retired early? That sounds… convenient.”“That’s what I’m saying,” Asher said, leaning back. “People don’t just vanish like that. Not when they held that position. He knows something.”I scoffed. “Or he did. And Christian made sure no one ever hears from him again.”“Exactly,” Asher said. “Which is why this is important. If anyone can have any information or even evidence, it’s him. But he’s been hiding for years.”I slammed my fist lightly on the table. “Do we know where he is?"Asher smirked faintly, holding up a small piece of paper. "I wouldn't bring it up if I didn't.”I smiled and nodded, shutting the laptop. “Then what are we still waiting fo
Hunter.Lucia was still asleep on her stomach, breathing softly when I slipped out of the room before sunrise. For a second, I'd almost stayed as I watched her sleep, almost laid back down, pulled her into my chest, and let the world burn around us.But I couldn’t. I couldn’t risk Christian walking in or risk one guard seeing me in the wrong hallway. I couldn’t risk putting her in more danger than she was already drowning in.So I forced myself to move.By the time I stepped into the hallway, the house was still dead quiet. No footsteps. No guards. No Christian. Good. I took the back stairwell instead of the front one and slipped out through the exit door.I showered again in my own room then changed into fresh clothes and headed out before anyone else was up.By 6:15 a.m., I was on the road. And by 7:00, I pulled up in front of one of my safe houses I used for everything connected to Christian.Asher’s car was already parked out front.I sighed. “Of course he’s early.”I walked insi
LuciaFor a good thirty seconds, I just stared at him.Hailey Young. I'd heard the name so many many times I wasn't even fazed anymore. “Hunter… who is Hailey Young?”He didn’t look away from me, but something in his eyes shifted. “That’s the thing,” he said quietly, “I don’t know.”My jaw dropped. “Are you joking? How can you not know? You kept saying her name likeyoi knew who she was, like she was someone so relevant.”“She is,” he cut in, "I'm sure.”“But you don’t know who she is?”“No.” He shook his head. “I’ve tried finding her but nothing turns up. Not in any way that makes sense.”My heart throbbed with frustration. “Then why are you so convinced she’s important?”“Because both our fathers were terrified of her name,” he stated, his voice straight. “And terrified of anyone asking questions about her. That alone tells me she’s central to whatever Christian is hiding.”My stomach was in knots. “My father refused to tell me,” I whispered, “no matter how much I begged.”“He refu
Lucia. The bathroom was still foggy with heat when when we stepped out and into the room. Hunter pulled me into him, our bodies moist and fresh from the shower, and placed a soft kiss on my forehead.“You okay?” he whispered.I nodded. “Yeah. You?”“More than,” he teased, brushing a wet strand of hair from my cheek. “Come on.”He climbed into the bed first, patting the space next to him. “Come here.”I slipped into the bed, still wearing my robe and sank into his arms. The sheets were warm and the room quiet except for the sound of our breathing slowly settling. Hunter shifted, guiding me closer until my head rested on his chest as he traced slow, gentle lines along my arm with his fingers. For a while, neither of us said anything. Then I took a small breath. “Can we… pick up where we left off?”His hand paused. “Where we left off?”“Before I left for the hospital,” I said softly, looking up at his face, “when I asked you about Hailey Young.”His chest rose and fell in a deeper breath
