It had been a week since Megan started working. Because Beth neither agreed nor opposed the notion of her getting a job, Megan delved right into it. At least this way, she had a reason of being out of the house and would earn an income in the process.

Spending the whole day in the house had become stifling. The people who were still flocking to the house to offer their condolences looked down on her and treated her like the house help. Of course, Beth never bothered to correct them. Her husband was spending more time with his mistress and her sister-in-law had her friends to keep her company. Her cousin-in-law was the only one who occasionally treated her like a human being.

She had already fallen into a routine with Benny. She would wake up at six in the morning to prepare breakfast for Benny while she packed his lunch. She would then rush to take a shower before waking up her son. While Benny showered, she dressed and laid down his clothes.

After they were done with their morning routine, they would then head to the kitchen for breakfast. Megan wanted Benny to have a full breakfast so she normally laid the table with a bowl of oatmeal, eggs, and some fruits which he downed with a glass of milk.

Benny would then be dropped at school by 8 am and thereafter she would head to work. As one of the sales ladies, it was part of her duty to ensure that the display cabinets were well arranged and the catalogs were up to date.

The doors would open for business at 9 am. The shop catered to elegant ladies of class and one had to be on her best of etiquette to serve them. From offering them beverages to showing them the latest arrivals, her day was spent on her feet, moving back and forth until a client was satisfied with her purchases. Her shift ran for seven hours so she would leave work at 4 pm to pick Benny up from school.

She had enrolled him for an hour of extra tuition since she knew that nobody at home would be willing to pick him up from school. Also if he was to go home without her then who knew what kind of torment would await him? Ever since she got married to Richard, her son had never left her side.

To spend quality and uninterrupted mother-son time, they would visit the park for an hour before driving home in the evening. By the time Benny had taken a shower and done his assignments, it was dinner time, and thereafter storytime followed by time to sleep.

Slipping comfortably into this routine, she didn’t expect to hear a knock on the door one night after she had already gone to bed. Not wanting to wake Benny up who was fast asleep in the cot next to her bed, she tiptoed and opened the door without switching on the lights wondering who it could be at that time of the night.

“You have not prepared my dinner for the past week” Rich in an accusatory tone with a scowl on his face which surprised Megan. This was the first time since she got married that Rich has made initiated a conversation with her.

“I am sorry but I thought that you always eat out” she did not want to voice her thoughts knowing very well that he usually spent his evenings with his girlfriend before coming home late in the night. He reeked of Liana's perfume.

“You are still my wife so you have to fulfill your wifely duties. I need a hot meal right now,” he grumbled as he turned to head back downstairs. Having no choice, she closed her bedroom door and went to the kitchen.

Since she started working, she was no longer saving a plate for him so she had to make a meal for him and the simplest that she could make do with was rice and children’s stew.

Placing the food on the dining table, she was about to turn and head back to her room when he asked her to stop.

“I am sorry but do you need anything else?” she checked the table. Everything was in place so what did he want now?

“Sit down. Do you expect me to eat alone?”

“Please I have an early morning so I need to rest” she was not going to be a babysitter for a grown man. Rushing up the staircase before he could say anything, she locked the door and went back to bed.

Rich had no idea why he did all that. He sure was not hungry cause he had been having his dinner with Liana ever since his father's funeral. He always hated it when he came back home in the middle of the night to find Megan still seated in the living room, like a devoted wife, waiting to serve him.

He felt empty the whole week when he came back home to find that she was not waiting for him. He did not even understand why he was mad about it seeing that he abhorred her presence.

After picking on the food, he went to his bedroom and made a video call to Liana.

“Babe, what took you so long?” she answered the call in white lingerie. She still had makeup on and sat cross-legged on her bed.

“I just got home” he avoided her stare. “Why don’t you sleep early and we will meet tomorrow at our usual spot?” he blew her a kiss and hung up before she could reply. His girlfriend was always very quick at picking his mood change and he did not want to get into it right now.

Liana stared at the phone in her hand. Something sure was different with him tonight. He did not even notice the new lingerie that she had put on, especially for him.

“No, I will never allow him to slip through my fingers,” she said with clenched teeth.

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   THE UNKNOWN ASSAILANT

As the first rays of dawn filtered through the blinds of the hospital waiting room, casting long, pale shadows, the weight of the night’s events pressed down on Queen and Dante. The initial shock had begun to give way to a gnawing anxiety, a desperate yearning for any news about Megan. Wendy sat quietly beside Dante, her presence a silent question mark in the tense atmosphere. The police officer returned with a weary look on his face. “We’ve reviewed the CCTV footage from the campus gate,” he began, his voice low and serious. “It’s… not very clear. The area was dimly lit, and the crucial moment was obscured by the branches of the acacia tree.” Queen’s heart sank. That one piece of evidence, the potential key to unlocking the mystery, was shrouded in darkness. “However,” the police officer continued, his gaze meeting Queen’s, “we did see a figure running away from the scene shortly after the estimated time of the attack. We will continue working on it". A chill ran down Queen’s s

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAS HAPPENED

The scene that unfolded before Queen in the periphery of the campus lights sent a jolt of pure terror through her as she saw a shadowy figure crouched over a motionless form lying on the tarmac. Her breath hitched in her throat. It couldn't be...“Megan!” The name tore from her throat as she dropped to her knees beside her friend. Megan lay sprawled on the cold tarmac, her limbs at an unnatural angle. A dark stain was blooming on the back of her head, and her usually vibrant face was ashen and still. Queen’s fingers trembled as she reached out, gently touching Megan’s cheek. It was cold.Tears welled up in Queen’s eyes, blurring her vision. “Megan, wake up! Please, wake up!” Her voice was choked with sobs. "Do you know this lady?" The man asked as he moved aside for Queen."She called for a cab but didn't get in. When I alighted to see what was going on, I found her sprawled on the ground."Queen lifted her face to look at the cab driver, tears welling in her eyes. She fumbled for

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   FROM WORRY TO ANXIETY

The world dissolved into a starless void. One moment, the harsh glow of the campus lights illuminated her frantic face as she reached for the taxi door; the next, an all-encompassing darkness swallowed her whole. The last sensation was a dull, sickening thud against the back of her skull, followed by an abrupt silence that was more terrifying than any noise. Megan’s phone slipped from her numb fingers and clattered onto the tarmac, its screen displaying Dante’s contact. The cab driver, oblivious to the silent violence unfolding behind him, waited patiently, the meter ticking. A shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, his face obscured by the low-hanging branches of a nearby acacia tree. He swiftly retrieved Megan’s phone, his movements precise and deliberate. With a final, lingering glance at Megan’s unconscious form sprawled on the ground, he melted back into the night, leaving no trace of his presence. Inside the grand hotel, the party continued its raucous crescendo. Laught

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   HE LEFT YOU FOR HER

The air in the grand hotel hall that was hosting the campus party crackled with an almost palpable energy.Lizbeth moved through the throng with the practised ease of a hostess. Her smile was bright, her greetings effusive, but behind the polished facade, her mind was a whirlwind of calculations and simmering resentments. Tonight was about more than just a simple college party; it was about subtly manoeuvring pieces on her own personal chessboard. Her gaze, sharp and assessing, swept across the room, finally settling on a figure standing somewhat apart near the ornate bar. Wendy, Dante’s ex-girlfriend, exuded a quiet intensity, a hint of lingering pain, hidden in her eyes.Wendy had arrived with a singular purpose: to see Dante, to gauge the possibility of rekindling a flame she believed had never truly died. Seeing him across the room, laughing with a group of men, a familiar ache resonated within her.Lizbeth, ever the opportunist, had invited Wendy, not as a potential ally but a

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   SOME KIND OF WALKING ATM

The grand ballroom buzzed with vibrant energy, the air thick with the murmur of conversations and the clinking of glasses. The party was in full swing, a celebratory affair following the successful signing of a crucial international investment contract. Yet, amidst the revelry, Rich, the company's usually charismatic CEO, stood apart. He was a solitary figure in a dimly lit corner, a glass of amber liquid clutched in his hand, its contents barely touched. The truth was, he hadn't wanted to be here. The weight of the day's intense negotiations still pressed heavily on him, and all he truly desired was the quiet solitude of his home. However, his position demanded his presence, a symbol of gratitude and success for the visiting investors. Across the room, Liana was a whirlwind of practised charm, embodying the role of the perfect hostess. She glided from table to table, her laughter echoing, ensuring her presence was felt by every guest. A carefully cultivated percept

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   ARE YOU THREATENING ME?

Queen sighed, running a hand through her hair. She had noticed the dreamy look on Megan's and the soft hum on her lips, indicating that something might have transpired that day. She had also missed classes, which had never occurred before."It must be Dante" she guessed."Queen, we cleared things up." She said as she smiled at her friend and explained what happened earlier.Megan's blissful ignorance was starting to grate on her nerves. "Megan," she began again, trying to keep her tone gentle, "I'm just saying, isn't it a little convenient that Dante suddenly has all the answers and Lizbeth is just… a liar?"Megan's smile faltered slightly. "But Queen, he explained everything! He said Lizbeth was just someone his family knew a long time ago, and she's always been a bit… dramatic. He said he told her to stop spreading rumours."Queen raised an eyebrow. "And you believe that wholeheartedly?""Yes!" Megan insisted, her smile returning with a touch of defiance. "Dante wouldn't lie to me.
