It had been a week since Megan started working. Because Beth neither agreed nor opposed the notion of her getting a job, Megan delved right into it. At least this way, she had a reason of being out of the house and would earn an income in the process.

Spending the whole day in the house had become stifling. The people who were still flocking to the house to offer their condolences looked down on her and treated her like the house help. Of course, Beth never bothered to correct them. Her husband was spending more time with his mistress and her sister-in-law had her friends to keep her company. Her cousin-in-law was the only one who occasionally treated her like a human being.

She had already fallen into a routine with Benny. She would wake up at six in the morning to prepare breakfast for Benny while she packed his lunch. She would then rush to take a shower before waking up her son. While Benny showered, she dressed and laid down his clothes.

After they were done with their morning routine, they would then head to the kitchen for breakfast. Megan wanted Benny to have a full breakfast so she normally laid the table with a bowl of oatmeal, eggs, and some fruits which he downed with a glass of milk.

Benny would then be dropped at school by 8 am and thereafter she would head to work. As one of the sales ladies, it was part of her duty to ensure that the display cabinets were well arranged and the catalogs were up to date.

The doors would open for business at 9 am. The shop catered to elegant ladies of class and one had to be on her best of etiquette to serve them. From offering them beverages to showing them the latest arrivals, her day was spent on her feet, moving back and forth until a client was satisfied with her purchases. Her shift ran for seven hours so she would leave work at 4 pm to pick Benny up from school.

She had enrolled him for an hour of extra tuition since she knew that nobody at home would be willing to pick him up from school. Also if he was to go home without her then who knew what kind of torment would await him? Ever since she got married to Richard, her son had never left her side.

To spend quality and uninterrupted mother-son time, they would visit the park for an hour before driving home in the evening. By the time Benny had taken a shower and done his assignments, it was dinner time, and thereafter storytime followed by time to sleep.

Slipping comfortably into this routine, she didn’t expect to hear a knock on the door one night after she had already gone to bed. Not wanting to wake Benny up who was fast asleep in the cot next to her bed, she tiptoed and opened the door without switching on the lights wondering who it could be at that time of the night.

“You have not prepared my dinner for the past week” Rich in an accusatory tone with a scowl on his face which surprised Megan. This was the first time since she got married that Rich has made initiated a conversation with her.

“I am sorry but I thought that you always eat out” she did not want to voice her thoughts knowing very well that he usually spent his evenings with his girlfriend before coming home late in the night. He reeked of Liana's perfume.

“You are still my wife so you have to fulfill your wifely duties. I need a hot meal right now,” he grumbled as he turned to head back downstairs. Having no choice, she closed her bedroom door and went to the kitchen.

Since she started working, she was no longer saving a plate for him so she had to make a meal for him and the simplest that she could make do with was rice and children’s stew.

Placing the food on the dining table, she was about to turn and head back to her room when he asked her to stop.

“I am sorry but do you need anything else?” she checked the table. Everything was in place so what did he want now?

“Sit down. Do you expect me to eat alone?”

“Please I have an early morning so I need to rest” she was not going to be a babysitter for a grown man. Rushing up the staircase before he could say anything, she locked the door and went back to bed.

Rich had no idea why he did all that. He sure was not hungry cause he had been having his dinner with Liana ever since his father's funeral. He always hated it when he came back home in the middle of the night to find Megan still seated in the living room, like a devoted wife, waiting to serve him.

He felt empty the whole week when he came back home to find that she was not waiting for him. He did not even understand why he was mad about it seeing that he abhorred her presence.

After picking on the food, he went to his bedroom and made a video call to Liana.

“Babe, what took you so long?” she answered the call in white lingerie. She still had makeup on and sat cross-legged on her bed.

“I just got home” he avoided her stare. “Why don’t you sleep early and we will meet tomorrow at our usual spot?” he blew her a kiss and hung up before she could reply. His girlfriend was always very quick at picking his mood change and he did not want to get into it right now.

Liana stared at the phone in her hand. Something sure was different with him tonight. He did not even notice the new lingerie that she had put on, especially for him.

“No, I will never allow him to slip through my fingers,” she said with clenched teeth.

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   BABY STEPS TO REBUILDING TRUST

The silence that followed Megan's outburst was a heavy, suffocating blanket, more profound than any of Dante's carefully constructed cold shoulders. It was the silence of shattered glass, of a foundation cracking under immense pressure. Dante stood there, the expensive suit a symbol of a life that no longer existed, his face a mask of shock. The woman screaming in front of him, her face streaked with tears and fury, was a stranger. This wasn't his "Megan"—his quiet, compliant wife. This was a raw, primal force he had unleashed with his neglect."A shattered, neglected emotional wreck that he himself had created with his own hands," a voice in his head whispered, the truth cutting through his bewilderment. He had been so focused on building the life, he'd forgotten the person living it.He slowly took off his suit jacket and placed it on a nearby chair, a gesture of surrender. The fight had been taken out of him. He wasn't angry; he was genuinely, terrifyingly lost. He had pushed his

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   THE HOUSE OF CARDS COME TUMBLING DOWN

The third trimester arrived, and with it came a new kind of terror for Megan. Her body, once her own, was now a swollen, unwieldy vessel, her once-carefree movements replaced by a slow, deliberate waddle. The mood swings were worse, a constant, unpredictable storm of tears and rage. All she wanted was to be left alone, to curl up in the quiet sanctity of her apartment and wait for the storm to pass.Dante, however, had other plans. His new business deal, secured thanks to a little help from Bill, had been finalized, and he was on top of the world. The pregnancy was now visible, a prominent swell beneath Megan's clothes, and he was obsessed with showing it off. The baby bump was a symbol of his success, a testament to his prowess as a provider and a man, and he wanted the world to see it."We have to go out, my love," he insisted one Friday evening, his face alight with an uncontainable joy. "A big dinner. A celebration. I want to show you off. I

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   PREGNANCY MOOD SWINGS

The weeks that followed were a blur of nausea, fatigue, and a profound emotional instability that Megan couldn't control. The quiet sadness she had so carefully kept hidden was now manifesting as a chaotic storm of emotions. The pregnancy hormones, a cruel and unpredictable force, had become a magnifying glass for her deepest anxieties. A happy, carefree moment could turn into a fit of inexplicable tears. A simple, well-intentioned suggestion from Dante could trigger a sudden, irrational rage.Dante, the master of control, was utterly ill-equipped to handle this new reality. He saw her mood swings not as a natural part of pregnancy, but as a problem to be solved, a flaw in his otherwise perfect blueprint. He would try to "fix" her with gifts—a new dress, a piece of jewelry, a box of chocolates. But his attempts only made things worse, making her feel like an object, a child to be appeased, rather than a woman in the midst of a profound, physical and emot

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   WE CAN'T BE A CRUTCH FOR HER

The morning after the celebration was a quiet and sober affair. The last echoes of Dante's champagne-fueled exuberance had faded, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than before. The half-empty bottles on the counter and the discarded paper plates were a testament to the hollow performance of the previous night. Megan moved through the apartment like a ghost, her heart a heavy, leaden weight in her chest. The small, private comfort she had found in her phone call to her mother was now a distant memory, a fleeting moment of warmth in a cold and lonely world.Dante, however, was a man transformed. He bustled through the kitchen, a whirlwind of energy, completely oblivious to the strained atmosphere. The celebration, in his mind, had been a resounding success. He had shown his friends that he was a family man, a successful provider, and a husband on the precipice of an even greater future. The awkward silences and tense glances from Ben and Mike had

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE   A GATHERING OF STRANGERS AND GHOSTS

The phone rang once, twice, a shrill, anachronistic sound that cut through the silence of the cafe. Megan’s hand trembled as she held the device, a sudden fear gripping her. What if her mother didn't answer? What if she answered and the sound of her voice, a voice so full of a love Megan had so recklessly cast aside, was more than she could bear? On the third ring, a gentle, familiar voice answered, tentative and laced with a weariness that went straight to Megan’s heart.“Hello?” Sarah’s voice was soft, questioning.Megan’s breath caught in her throat. For a moment, she couldn’t speak. The sheer weight of everything she had done, everything she had lost, pressed down on her.“Mom?” she finally managed to choke out, the word a fragile whisper.Silence on the other end. A long, agonizing pause where Megan could hear the soft static of the connection and the quickening beat of her own heart. Then, a sharp, disbelieving intake of breath.“Megan?” Sarah’s voice was different now, a mix

  • THE ABANDONED WIFE    A SILENT BEAUTIFUL ACCESSORY

The morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting a soft, golden light on their bedroom. But for Megan, the room was shrouded in a shadow of profound uncertainty. She lay awake in Dante's arms, his hand resting gently on her stomach, his breath a warm, steady rhythm against her neck. The moment she had blurted out the news of her pregnancy, the emotional storm that had been raging between them had vanished, replaced by a radiant, almost blinding joy from Dante. He had been so ecstatic, so full of promises and affirmations, that it left no room for her own swirling fears.Dante woke, his eyes finding hers with a love so pure and overwhelming that it felt like another form of control. "Good morning, my love," he murmured, his voice husky. "And good morning to our little one." He kissed her forehead, then her lips, a tenderness in his touch that felt both sincere and suffocating. "I'm going to be a daddy."That day marked the beginning of a new
