Chapter 32

Grace's hands wouldn’t stop trembling.

The tiny room felt smaller with every passing minute, as if the walls were inching closer, trying to crush the air out of her lungs. A flickering overhead bulb buzzed like an insect trapped in amber, casting jagged shadows across the floor. The silence wasn't peaceful—it was full with dread.

She paced across the cracked linoleum floor, her phone gripped tightly in one hand like a lifeline. The other hand kept curling and uncurling against her chest, her fingernails digging into the cotton of her sweater as if pressure could keep the panic inside.

Luna's voice still echoed in her ears.

“Grace?”

It had been cautious. Raw. Laced with disbelief, but undeniably familiar.

Hearing her again had felt like stepping barefoot into a memory—painful, but grounding.

“She remembered the lullaby,” Grace whispered, half to herself. “She remembered the hummingbird…”

“You did the right thing.”

The voice came from the corner of the room. Soft. Steady. Wrapped in sha

The red tulip sat on the desk like a silent threat.Grace couldn’t take her eyes off it. Her chest rose and fell in shaky breaths. The letter opener trembled in her hand, catching the dim light every time her fingers twitched. Across from her, Damien stood like he had all the time in the world. Calm. Like they were old friends catching up. Not predator and prey.“You remember tulips, right?” His voice was soft, too soft. “Your mom loved them. Red ones. Just like this.”Grace’s jaw clenched. Her grip tightened on the letter opener. “Don’t.”“Don’t what?” He tilted his head like a child pretending to be confused. “Talk about Elise? About how she used to braid your hair while telling stories? Or how she’d make us hot chocolate when I stayed over?”“Stop.” Her voice cracked. He stepped closer. His smile didn’t reach his eyes. “She was like a second mother to me. After my dad left… after my mother lost her damn mind with her plans. Elise took me in. Fed me. Held me when I cried.”Grace bac

Helena Chen stepped into the gleaming lobby of the Meridian Hotel like she owned the place—and perhaps, once upon a time, she might’ve said she did. Her heels clicked against polished marble, the echo sharp and commanding. She was elegance dressed in steel—flawless makeup, a coat tailored to perfection, and an expression that said she hadn’t come to play games. The mirror-like elevator doors caught her reflection as she paused, adjusting the diamond earring on her left ear. Her skin, kissed by six months of Milanese spa treatments and distance, glowed. But beneath the surface—under the highlighter and the silk blouse—was something far less peaceful. Restlessness. Bitterness. Rage, sharpened with patience. The elevator pinged open.Penthouse.Helena didn’t hesitate. The top floor smelled faintly of fresh-cut peonies and imported leather. The door wasn’t locked. It never was.She pushed it open and walked in like she had the right—because, frankly, she believed she did."Victoria."Her

The slap cracked through the penthouse like a whip, sharp and final.Damien’s head jerked to the side, a streak of blood trailing from his split lip. The zip ties cutting into his wrists only made him angrier, his chest rising and falling with ragged, shallow breaths."You stupid, pathetic little boy," the woman hissed, her heels clicking against the cold marble floor as she paced around him. "After everything I built… after everything I sacrificed… this is how you repay me?"He spat blood onto the flawless white carpet. “She belongs to me. She always did.”Another slap. Harder this time. Her ring caught his cheek, leaving a thin, angry scratch.“She belongs to no one, Damien. Least of all you. If only I knew who she was earlier.” Her voice was cold — not angry in the way most people get. It was the kind of cold that made your bones feel it, the kind that meant she wasn’t even yelling because you weren’t worth the effort. For a moment, the only sound in the room was the soft hum of th

The peaceful morning shattered at eleven thirty-seven when Luna's phone rang. She and Grayson were curled together on the living room sofa, her head on his shoulder as they watched some mindless romantic comedy—her choice, his amused tolerance. His fingers traced lazy patterns on her arm while she critiqued the heroine's terrible decision-making skills."She's going to pick the wrong guy," Luna muttered, stealing a piece of chocolate from the box balanced on Grayson's chest."How can you tell?""Because she's not listening to her instincts. She's letting other people's opinions cloud her judgment." Luna popped the chocolate in her mouth, savoring the dark sweetness. "Trust me, I'm an expert on making romantic mistakes.""Present company excluded, I hope."She tilted her head to look at him, noting the teasing smile that made her heart flip. "You weren't a mistake. You were... an unexpected blessing.""I'll take it." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "Though I'm still not sure

The morning sun painted golden streaks across the penthouse floor when Luna woke to the sound of sizzling bacon and the rich aroma of fresh coffee. For a moment, she forgot where she was—forgot the danger, the mysteries, the weight of her past. All she knew was the warmth of silk sheets and the lingering scent of Grayson's cologne on the pillow beside her.She found him in the kitchen, his hair still tousled from sleep, wearing nothing but dark pajama pants and a concentrated expression as he flipped eggs with surprising skill. The sight made her heart flutter in ways that had nothing to do with fear."You cook?" she asked, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. His muscles tensed briefly before relaxing into her touch. "Among my many hidden talents," he murmured, leaning back against her. "Though I should warn you—my repertoire is limited to breakfast and basic pasta."Luna pressed her cheek against his back, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. "That's two more
