Elena had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Gabriel's face in that ballroom, the shock, the pain, the desperate hunger in his emerald gaze as he watched her announce her engagement to Marcus.

But the satisfaction felt hollow.

Her phone buzzed at seven in the morning, pulling her from restless thoughts. Her grandmother's name flashed on the screen.

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER 42: THE OLD LOVE MEMORIES

"She stayed loyal to a fantasy. Not to me.""Try telling her that."After Derek leaves, Gabriel starts the slow process of restoring his office. Putting books back where they belong. Returning files to their proper places. He picks up the photograph of Elena from the box. Their mating ceremony. She's laughing, flowers in her hair, and he's looking at her like she hung the moon.Gabriel sets it back on his desk where it belongs. His phone buzzes. An unknown number. He answers cautiously. "Thorne."Heavy breathing on the other end. Then Vanessa's voice, tight with emotion. "I hope you're happy.""Vanessa…"Gabriel. This is how you repay me? Kicking me out like I'm nothing?"You crossed a line. You know you did.""I was helping you move on!""I didn't ask for your help."You never ask for anything! You just suffer in silence, pining for a woman who doesn't want you, and expect everyone around you to watch and do nothing!Gabriel's jaw tightens. "This conversation is over.""No. It's not.

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER 41: THE BREAKING POINT

Gabriel returns home at 6 PM on a Tuesday, exhausted from territory negotiations with the Mountain Ridge Pack. All he wants is a quiet evening, a glass of scotch, and maybe to work through some paperwork in peace. What he finds instead is Vanessa in his home office, elbow-deep in his filing cabinets."What are you doing here?" Gabriel stops in the doorway.Vanessa looks up with a bright smile. "Reorganizing your office. I noticed last week that your filing system was inefficient. Documents weren't properly categorized, and your desk setup wasn't optimized for workflow."Gabriel's eyes scan the room. His desk has been moved. His bookshelves rearranged. Files are stacked in new locations he doesn't recognize."I didn't ask you to reorganize anything.""I know, but I had some free time this afternoon and thought I'd surprise you." Vanessa gestures to the desk. "See? Much better flow now. Your most-used files are within arm's reach, and I've created a new system for incoming council docume

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER 40: THE CONFUSION

Across town, Gabriel sits in his office, staring at his phone.Elena blocked him. Actually, blocked him.He can't text her. Can't call her. Can't explain that last night was a setup.Derek walks in without knocking. "Any luck reaching her?""She blocked my number. I'm persona non grata.""I texted her. Told her what I saw. Maybe she'll listen to me.""Or maybe she'll think you're just covering for me." Gabriel tosses his phone onto his desk. "I've lost her, Derek. Completely. Whatever small chance I had of rebuilding trust just got obliterated by Vanessa's latest manipulation."So fight back. Publicly. Make a statement on PackConnect explaining what really happened."And look desperate? Defensive? Like I'm trying to cover up a relationship?" Gabriel shakes his head. "That'll just make things worse."Then what's your plan?"I don't have one." Gabriel stands, moving to the window. She's blocked all communication with me. She believes I'm with Vanessa despite my repeated denials. What pla

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   CHAPTER 39: THE TRUTH MARCUS SEES

Elena wakes to sunlight streaming through her bedroom window and the smell of fresh coffee. For a moment, she's disoriented. Then she remembers, Marcus stayed over last night. On the couch. Perfectly respectful, perfectly Marcus. She finds him in her kitchen, making breakfast while her children sit at the table with coloring books."Mr Marcus makes funny pancakes!" Asher announces, holding up a plate with a pancake shaped vaguely like a dinosaur."It's supposed to be a dragon," Marcus corrects with mock seriousness.Dragons have bigger wings, Aurora informs him, her artistic eye critical.Ashton just eats his pancake quietly, watching Marcus with those too-perceptive green eyes.Elena's chest tightens at the domestic scene. This is what she wants, isn't it? Stability. A father figure for her children. Normal family breakfasts without secrets and complications."Morning," Marcus greets her. Coffee's ready. I wasn't sure if you wanted…"Coffee is perfect." Elena pours herself a cup, avoi

  • THE ALPHA CHILDREN LIVES   38: THE PHOTO

The micro-expression of satisfaction on Vanessa's face before she schools it back to neutral. It was staged. All of it.The stumble. The intimate positioning. The "accidental" photograph."Vanessa," Gabriel says quietly, dangerously.I should go sit down. Vanessa starts to walk away.Gabriel catches her arm. "What did you just do?"I don't know what you mean. I felt dizzy, you helped me, and someone accidentally took a photo. Nothing sinister."That woman is your friend."She's a pack coordinator from the Eastern territory. I've met her at events, but I wouldn't call her a friend."You planned this."You're being paranoid. Vanessa pulls her arm free. Now, if you'll excuse me, I really do need to sit down. This has been an exhausting day.She walks away before Gabriel can stop her.Derek appears at his side moments later. "Please tell me I didn't just see what I think I saw."If you think you saw Vanessa stage a photo opportunity to make it look like we're together, then yes. You saw ex

Elena sees Gabriel's text while sitting in her office with Marcus, reviewing the final guest list for their wedding. Her phone buzzes. She glances at the screen. Sees Gabriel's name.Sees the message: I know you don't want to hear from me, but I need you to know the rumors aren't true. She sets the phone face down without reading the rest."Gabriel?" Marcus asks quietly."Just work stuff." Elena forces her attention back to the spreadsheet. "Where were we? Table assignments?"Marcus watches her for a moment. "Elena, if you need to respond to him…""I don't. Now, your parents at table three or table five?""Three. Closer to the head table." Marcus pauses. "The rumors about Gabriel and his secretary. Are they true?""I don't know. I don't care.""You're a terrible liar."Elena looks up sharply. "Marcus…""I'm not angry. I'm not even jealous. I'm just stating facts." Marcus leans back in his chair. "You care. Of course, you care. He was your husband. You have history.""History that's lon
