Sephora's POV

I walked outside and the moon was bright and it's glow bathed the entire land. The sisters were all ready. Artemisia walked up to me from behind and handed me the white veil that I was meant to put on. I smiled and took it from her and covered my long flowing brown hair. We couldn't proceed, however, without Kali.

I didn't have to wait too long as she soon appeared. The moon light made her look even more mysterious as her black mist intertwined with the moon's bluish glow.

"Sephora, are you ready?"

I nodded. Could I 'not be ready'?

"Yes Mistress Kali."

There was nothing left to do. Kali gave me a flaming torch and I walked infront of the procession. As we took a step, I would light the torches that the sisters had set up that led all the way to the waters of the Lunaria.

As I lighted each torch, the path grew brighter and brighter and the sky was set alight with the moon's glow and fire. I was filled with anxiety and excitement. I couldn't wait to meet the new Suprema. Half way through the journey, Kali began to chant. Her voice pierced the night and the birds stopped their songs to listen to her eerie yet melodic singing.

She sang in ancient Lycan and the sisters that knew the language joined in. Their voices filled the air and I continued to light the torches the entire way. The Lunaria was quite far and the walk was slow and steady. Artemisia walked quietly by my side avoiding eye contact with me. I could feel her heavy heart yet, this was what had to be done.

After a while, Kali's voice grew even louder and soon, I could hear the rushing sound of the waters of the Lunaria. We were nearly there. The sisiters and Kali chanted even louder and I grew even more nervous and excited. Soon, the stream came into full view. The moon's light reflected off the waters perfectly, better than any mirror could. It was nature at it's peak of perfection. The sisters stopped and Kali walked up to the front. Her voice was loud and commanding, yet cool and still mysterious.

"Sisters! The Moon Goddess consecrates this ceremony for today, from these waters, we shall welcome a new member of the pack and the future Suprema."

All was silent. She looked at me; her eyes had a frighthtening blue glow. The spirit of the waters of the Lunaria had taken over her. Such was the the power of the shaman, Mistress Kali.

"Sephora, step forward."

I took an anxious step forward and looked into Kali's flaming blue eyes.

"Suprema Serphora, Wolf of the burning flame, the Goddess asks you to shed your light."

I closed my eyes and soon I could feel the heat of my flame fan around me. I opened my eyes and Kali's face was bathed in a blue and orange glow. One from the moon and one from my fiery light.

My white veril burnt away and the breeze carried the ashes into the waters and they floated on top and burnt blue with light.

"The Goddess has acknowledged the transfer of the mantle of leadership. Sephora my dear, step forward and grace the waters of the Lunaria. They call to you."

I walked slowly into the calm stream and was soon waist deep. I stood still for a while and put my hands slowly into the water and held the pose. The sisters were as silent as a grave yard. All eyes were on me. I couldn't hear a sound, not even a breath. I closed my eyes and focused my mind and slowly, I could feel my hands getting heavier and heavier as if something was gently being put into them.

My flame continued to glow bright, the waters not quenching them and soon, I heard Kali's voice in the distance.

"Raise your hands Sephora. It has been done."

I lifted my hands slowly out of the water and I was carrying the most beautiful baby that I had ever seen. I looked at her chest and saw the mark of the Suprema just above her breast. I looked at my arm and found out that the mark had left me. I was no longer the Suprema. This baby was.

I turned to the sisters and as soon as they saw the baby in my hands, they all let out a howl that pierced the night. Kali smiled and gestured to me to step out of the waters of the Lunaria. It had been done. I smiled at Kali as I cradled the baby in my hands. I let out a howl as well and soon, all was silent around me. Artemisia let out a sad smile. My days to be with her had already started to count down.

Suddenly there was a gasp as someone walked forward. It was a little pup. We had left the little ones at home but some how this one had managed to follow us. She walked up to me holding a single moon flower and Kali didn't stop her. She smiled as the little one walked up to me and I bent down to receive the gift.

I looked at the girl's face and found out that it was Niylah, our wolf that was given to us on the last full moon. I took the flower from her and she smiled at the baby.

I stood up and faced the sisters and one came forward to pick Niylah up.

Kali spoke to me.

"The child is your to train for the next eighteen years. It is befitting that you name her. The Lunaria was silent about her name."

I looked at the sisters as they all waited for me to say her name.

"Sisters, I have waited for this child to be born. Her name was given to me on the howls of the winds. Welcome our newest sister. I name her–Sequoia."

Sephora:Chapter 18 Sephora: The sun had barely graced the horizon, and yet, I could still hear her. Her fire flickered in the darkness, reflected by the tip of her spear, which she hadn’t set down since the previous evening. I could still remember the look on Niylah’s face when Sequoia refused to eat dinner, picked up her spear and walked out into the cold night. Since then, her fire had been burning, illuminating the night, only stopping for brief minutes to rest. She didn’t take her loss very well. The disappointment was etched into her soul, and I couldn’t blame her. But this–training herself till exhaustion–was not the way. Food, rest, the Goddess had created them for a reason. As I lay in my bed, I watched my window be illuminated by the orange of her flame. Compared to when she had started yesterday, it has severely weakened, flickering like a weak fire starved of wood. I couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted her to be ready for the rites but this… I had to deal with this.

  • THE ALPHA FEMALE    Chapter 17

Sephora's POV “Sisters! Today we train! We must strengthen our bodies, minds and souls! The power the Goddess gives us must not be wasted!”My sister's voices filled the air, carried by the wind as they reached the furthest ends of the pack.Artemisia stepped forward. I smiled; it had been ages since I had seen her in her gear: Her bronze chest plate, dazzling with bright blue jewels, polished by Lunaria’s waters and blessed by the Goddess herself. Her spear was in her hand. Ornate and delicate but deadly in the hands of an expert like herself, its tip reflecting the early morning sun. Regal Artemisia.“Separate yourselves!" Her voice was loud and rumbling, commanding respect as the sisters separated themselves according to their abilities.Niylah stood in front of the water wolves, her small beautiful frame and bright blue eyes reflecting the sun's light as she stood at attention in her gear. She was a fine piece. Artemisia had outdone herself. If only…I turned to Sephora, the on

  • THE ALPHA FEMALE    Chapter 16

Sephora's POV “Sequoia! No! What are you doing?" I stood, hidden by the cover of the green foliage, and watched her talking to a group of strange creatures that surrounded her. They were tall and muscular, nothing like any of our sisters. They had no breasts, and their hair was short, lacking silkiness, and didn't flow in the wind. They surrounded Sequoia and spoke to her. Her smile grew as she talked back to them. Their hard and chiseled facial features hid the evil they harboured in their hearts.“Sequoia!" I tried to step forward, to free her from their seduction, but I was stopped by an invisible barrier.I banged on it, but it didn't give way. Tears filled my eyes as I watched her being led astray by these strange creatures.“Sequoia! Get away from them! They are evil!" But only I could hear the sound of my voice. She was lost in their talk which was carried by their deep, unearthly voices.I watched in agony as one of the creatures behind her pulled out a knife. My heart sha

  • THE ALPHA FEMALE    Chapter 15

Sequoia's POV I sat outside waiting. I watched the sun going down over the horizon, and the pitch blackness of night slowly began to spread its black tarp over the sky.Like a signal, lights in the distance began to flicker as flame torches came to life and campfires were built around every home. The wind rushed gently through my hair. The air was crisp and cold. I took a deep breath and felt my lungs being filled with refreshing air.The night slowly continued its siege and my eyes never left the path that Sephora would walk down on when she came back. Why was she so late? What was Kali even saying to her that would make her stay out this late?I began to worry. The last time she came back like this, she was in a terrible state. I shuddered as I remembered her raw and injured back, the pain on her face and he smiled that held back her groans of agony.I sighed. I hoped she would come back soon, or else I would track her down.“Sequoia, are you still there?" I didn't answer the que

  • THE ALPHA FEMALE    Chapter 14

Sephora's POV I walked back through the forest with Sequoia silent by my side. I looked at her eyes and saw the dulled color in them: the fire in her had been drained.I could tell the spar against Niylah had made her weary and my words hadn't fully sunken in yet.“Cheer up, Sequoia. I presume that the Goddess loves to see a smile on her face." She looked up at me but soon looked away. I could tell that a thousand questions were burning in her mind and it hurt me to not be able to tell her.My back was still throbbing. The pain that was shooting through me was immense. Artemisia's ointment only did so much to make it better.I sighed. I didn't think that the Goddess was cruel in her judgment. These were just how we lived, these were the things that we did to keep our people alive. The old ways had to be respected, regardless.I slipped into my mind and accessed Sequoia. She was stronger now but not nearly as ready as I needed her to be to take me on, to end my…I needed to soar with

I tried to get myself under control.I saw her yesterday. She was talking with Artemisia. She asked Niylah to take me inside.I woke up and saw Artemisia but there was no sign of Sephora. I had asked her where she was but she said nothing. She walked away from me without a word. I felt my heart give way. I…“Sequoia!" That was Niylah's voice. I felt life return to me and I dashed toward her loud voice. My heart was still thumping wildly.I reached the front door and there I saw her.Artemisia was holding her, supporting her as she walked with a slight limp. Her skin was covered with blood that seemed to drip from her back. She was in pain but as soon as she locked eyes with me, she rebuffed Artemisia's help and smiled at me.“Sequoia…”I couldn't contain myself and dashed towards her. Artemisia glared at me but I ignored
