“Then tell me who stopped you.”

Darius froze. I was still gripping his wrist, but neither of us made a move for a long moment.

“I don’t know,” he finally said.

I let go, frowning. “That’s not good enough.”

“I know.”

“You watched me die.”

“Yes.”

“You knew it was going to happen.”

“Yes.”

“And you tried to stop it.”

His jaw clenched. “Yes.”

“So someone stopped you.”

He fell silent. That was answer enough.

I stepped in closer. “Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

I studied his face. The arrogance, the detached Alpha mask—gone. I just found frustration there. Maybe fear. Somehow, that unsettled me way more than his usual coldness.

“If you remember I was executed,” I said, “then you remember something useful.”

He looked away. “Some memories come as flashes.”

“Flashes?”

“One second I’m standing in snow. The next, a room I’ve never seen. Sometimes I hear your voice. Sometimes my own hands are covered in blood.” He glanced at me again. “But there are gaps.”

“Convenient gaps.”

His face hardened. “You think I’m lying.”

“I don’t know what to think.”

“Good.”

I scowled. “Good?”

“You shouldn’t trust me.”

That knocked me sideways. “Why?”

“Because I don’t know if my memories are even real anymore.” He turned towards the window, keeping his back to me. “You shouldn’t trust yours completely, either.”

I stared at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

He turned back. “Your memories might not be the whole truth.”

A chill slid down my spine. Images rushed in—the execution platform, the blade, Lucian looking away. Velara beneath her silver crown. Darius arriving just a moment too late.

What if I didn’t remember everything? What if someone tampered with my own mind?

I shook it off. “No.”

He was watching me, way too carefully. “You remember the execution?”

“Every second.”

“Then remember this.” Darius stepped closer, dropping his voice. “Don’t trust anyone wearing silver.”

My stomach twisted. First thought? Velara—the silver crown, the embroidered gown, the councilors who watched me die. But I wasn’t about to let Darius see that flicker across my face.

“That’s a convenient warning,” I said.

He frowned. “What?”

“You won’t tell me who betrayed me, but you’ll tell me not to trust people in silver.”

“I’m telling you because I want you alive.”

“And I’m supposed to trust you for that?”

“No.”

That answer hit like a slap.

He stopped just in front of me. “You’re supposed to stay alive long enough to decide if I’m even worth trusting.”

I opened my mouth, but before I could speak, a sharp whistle cut through the room.

Darius’s head snapped toward the window. “Down!”

I barely moved in time.

The window shattered. Something dark flew through the air—Darius threw himself into me.

An arrow slammed into his shoulder with a sickening thud.

He staggered. I screamed. “Darius!”

He caught himself on the desk, blood already blooming across his black coat.

My mind went blank except for the sight of blood.

“You’re hurt.”

“I noticed.”

“You idiot!”

He looked at me, and in spite of everything, almost smiled. “Still shouting at me.”

“Sit down!”

“Seren—”

“Sit.”

Something in my voice made him obey this time. He eased into the chair.

I ran to the broken window.

“Don’t,” he said.

I turned back, just as he gripped the arrow and yanked it out. Blood spilled down his arm.

“Don’t go near the window.”

“Someone just shot you.”

“Exactly.”

“You could have died.” My voice broke.

He met my eyes, unblinking. “So could you.”

That hit harder than I expected.

He tossed the arrow aside. “Lock the door.”

I did, then hurried back to him. Blood was pooling across his shirt.

“Take off your coat.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Is that an order?”

“Yes.”

“You’re getting bossy.”

“Take. It. Off.”

A faint smile touched his lips, but he shrugged out of his coat and let it drop.

His shirt underneath was a mess of red. I knelt in front of him, grabbing a clean cloth from the cabinet near the fireplace. I pressed it to the wound, and he stiffened.

“Sorry.”

“You don’t sound sorry.”

“I’ll work on it.”

He almost laughed. “You’re terrible at it.”

I glanced up, and for the first time since he’d shown up in my life again, he didn’t look like a king or a wolf or anything dangerous—just a hurt man relying on me to keep him conscious.

I pressed harder. He winced sharply.

“Does it hurt?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

He almost smiled, and so did I—until I realized how close we were. My knee was between his. One hand braced on the chair, my fingers pressed to his bare skin. His scent closed in around me—deep cedar, cold night, something warmer just underneath.

My wolf, Vesper, who’d been silent all night, whispered: Him.

I swallowed hard. “No.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“Nothing.”

He watched me for a second, then glanced down at my hand. His whole face changed—instantly cold.

“Hold still.”

I frowned. “What?”

“Your wrist.”

I looked. The cloth had slipped. A faint, silvery mark curved on my wrist. I’d seen it that morning—thought it was an old scar. But in the moonlight through the wrecked window, it shone in a way I hadn’t noticed before.

Darius reached out, catching my hand. The second he touched the mark, his breath stopped.

“Darius?”

No answer. He traced the strange crescent shape with his thumb. His face drained of color.

“What is it?”

He stared at my wrist like it had spoken.

“Where…” His voice broke. I pulled my hand back.

“Where what?”

He looked at me, and for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.

“Where did you get this?”

I stared at the mark. “I’ve had it as long as I can remember.”

Darius shook his head slowly. “No.”

“What?”

He didn’t look away from the mark. “You didn’t.”

My pulse spiked. “What do you mean?”

He glanced up, and there was raw pain in the way he looked at me. Whatever he’d just remembered, he hated it.

“Seren…” His voice barely a breath. “Where did you get this mark?”

“Ask him what he did the night you died.”Lucian’s words stuck with me, echoing long after he left the archive. I stood there by the table, just staring at the execution record in my hands. The ink had faded a bit, but my name—Seren Vale—was still sharp. Execution authorization pending review. That date matched the day I died.Behind me, Darius shifted against the wall, his shoulder stiff under his shirt. He’d refused to let the healer look at it, insisting he’d survived worse. I honestly wasn’t sure anymore if it was stubbornness or him hiding something from me.“What did Lucian mean?” I said.Darius’s jaw clenched. “He wants you to doubt me.”“That’s not an answer.”“No,” he said, meeting my eyes. “It isn’t.”That honesty unsettled me more than any lie could.I folded the record and slid it into my pocket. “Then I guess I’ll have to find the answer myself.”I brushed past him.“Seren.” I stopped in the doorway, but didn’t turn.“Don’t meet Lucian alone,” he called.A bitter laugh sl

“Bring him in.” Darius’s words shot down the hall, snapping everyone to attention. I waited at his side, still clutching the note from the healer’s room. The Alpha must not learn what the girl was before she returned. I hated that line. Every time I thought about it, my skin crawled, like someone was rooting around inside my memories, stirring up things I’d rather forget. And what bothered me more—Darius seemed to get how dangerous it was, better than I did.A few minutes later, the guards shoved Lucian between them. He looked furious. “Is this how you treat your guests now? Your men almost broke my shoulder.”“You were seen entering the archive right before someone attacked an innocent man," Darius said. "You can complain after you explain yourself.”Lucian shot a look at me. “Seren, tell him.”“Tell him what?”“That I came to warn you.”I just stared at him. Lucian hadn’t changed since my first life—messy dark hair, expensive clothes, always with that cocksure smile, like the world

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 18 : THE PROPHECY HAS TWO NAMES

By sunrise, I’d figured out two things about Darius Thorncrest. First, he could command an army without ever raising his voice. And second, he could lie straight to my face and somehow make me feel like I was the one being cruel.I found him in the command room, hunched over a map, his coffee going cold. He looked wrecked—honestly, so did I. Neither of us had slept. “You have until sunrise,” I'd said last night. Sunrise was here. Time to get answers.“What did you burn?” I asked. He didn’t even glance up. “Good morning to you, too.”“Don’t try to charm your way out.”“Wasn’t planning to.”“Great. So what was on that parchment?”He finally looked at me. He hesitated—his shoulders all bunched up under his black shirt, eyes guarded—but then he put down the map.“It had a location on it,” he said.I waited. He exhaled. “The old sanctuary beyond the northern ridge.”“The altar?”“Possibly.”“So why burn it?”“Because the location was right next to a second mark. I recognized it. I didn’t w

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 17 : I AM NOT YOUR PRISONER

“The girl must reach the altar alive.”I stared at the message again—a third time—hoping something in those words would shift. They didn’t. The black symbol pressed into the wax glared up at me, familiar from my mother’s records, from that sealed chamber beneath her grave, from the bodies of men who tried to keep me quiet. Now, an army surrounded Bloodmoon territory. Someone wanted me, alive, brought to an altar.I looked at Darius.“Where is it?”He folded up the parchment, calm as ever. “We need to question the prisoner first.”“That’s not what I asked.”“I heard you.”“Then answer me.”His jaw clenched. The guards by the door exchanged nervous glances, but I barely registered them. All I saw was Darius—the man who’d somehow become the center of every mystery in my life.He knew something. I saw it in the way his shoulders tensed, his grip tightened on the parchment, the flicker of fear that crossed his face when anyone mentioned my death. I was catching up to his tells now—the litt

The eastern gate rattled again—another удар of the enemy’s battering ram. Dust drifted from the ceiling. Somewhere outside, men screamed, steel rang, and the warning horns blared through the chaos.I gripped the war table so hard my knuckles ached.“They’re not here for the kingdom. They’re here for you.” Darius’s words wouldn’t leave me alone.Three thousand soldiers were parked around Bloodmoon, but they’d barely bothered our best defenses. They ignored the northern watchtower. The western road was untouched. They focused everything on the eastern gate.Forget conquest. This was about me.I turned to Darius. “Why do they want me alive?”He stood at the open window, his dark coat snapping in the wind. His face was unreadable, but his fingers dug into the stone ledge.“You heard what the scout said,” he answered. “The High Council ordered you taken alive.”“That’s not good enough.” “It’s all I’ve got right now.”“Then get more.”He looked at me sharply—finally a reaction. We said not

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 15 : THEY CAME FOR ME

The prophecy wouldn’t let me go. It kept burning in my mind—over and over again, the same words: The woman who returns will become the death of the Alpha she loves. I’d read it so many times, it felt engraved inside my skull.Darius stood only a few feet away, sword drawn, his eyes scanning the trees by my mother’s grave. Somewhere in the dark, our attackers had started to slip away. I could hear the guards calling to each other, searching the grounds, but honestly? I barely noticed. My attention was glued to Darius. His family had protected that prophecy for generations. He’d known about the black symbol. He’d had my mother’s pendant. And now, according to him, maybe the prophecy wasn’t even complete. What else was he hiding from me?“Look at me,” I said.He turned, quiet but tense.“Tell me the truth.”“Seren, we need to leave. There could still be men out here.”“I’m not going anywhere until you answer me.”His jaw clenched. “Not here.”“Then pick a place and get talking, because y
