.LORI
I crawl backward, but Barrett bends over and grabs my hair, lifting me effortlessly. He shakes me furiously like a stubborn cat, and tears stream down at the piercing pain in my head.
“Where do you think you can go, huh? His voice is firm. “You think you can run after cheating on me?”
I place a hand under my protruding stomach as my legs begin to feel limp, but a dry laugh escapes Barrett.
“If not for this little thing inside you that may be mine,” Barrett says. “You'd be long dead, whore.”
But it's not just one. Barrett is unaware that I'm pregnant with twins. I've done my best to hide it from him this far with help from Maya, my former assistant at the hospital. I doubt anything will be different if he knows, so it's better he's kept in the dark.
The thought of telling him, of screaming it at his face, juggles in my mind as he drags me back into the house, but it's pointless. No other pack member shows up as Barrett pushes the back door open and pulls me past the kitchen down to the basement.
I call it a basement, but it's a dungeon. My eyes widen, and I grip Barrett’s leg, my voice cracking as I beg, sobbing.
“Please.”
Barrett stares down at me with a face void of emotions, and for a moment, I reckon he’s reconsidering. But he snatches the key from his pocket and opens the door hurriedly. As Barrett is about to push me in, Celine steps into the hallway and faces us.
I gaze at Celine, and I quickly silence the thought of begging her. I’d rather die than beg the person who flipped my whole life upside down because of her jealousy. Celine stares at me for a moment, then shifts her gaze to Barrett, gazing at him approvingly.
Barrett shoves me into the dungeon and stands there for a few seconds as I recover from the impact of landing hard on the cold floor. I sigh in defeat and stare into his eyes before he slams the door shut.
I crawl on the cold, dark dungeon floor, feeling with my hand until I reach the wall opposite the door. For what seems like forever, I sit, trying to comfort myself, but gory memories and those to come always invade my thoughts.
I’m not surprised Barrett believed Celine when she brought doctored photos to accuse me of flirting with Karl. Barrett was already distant, and poor Karl was a pawn in Celine’s plot because he never liked her presence around Barrett.
I would find a way out of this, I reason, and my weapon will be my helplessness.
My eyelids close slowly as I begin to doze off, but the door lock blares as it is unlocked, and my heart races in terror. It swings open to reveal Gusto, Barrett’s beta, standing with shoulders square and brows furrowed as he observes me.
“Out, now.” He barks at me.
I hurry to my feet, leaning on the wall to steady myself as my vision blurs and clears slowly. Hunger’s torture is inevitable, especially with two extra lives growing inside me. I stagger slowly towards Gusto, gripping the doorframe as my vision blurs again.
Gusto’s hand creeps under my arm as he holds me steady.
“Don’t die yet.” He says and begins to haul me toward the kitchen. “You still need to pop out Barrett’s pup.”
I raise my head slowly but avoid making eye contact with Gusto. He’s as bad as Barrett, and I didn’t try to convince him of my innocence. We enter the kitchen, and my eyes widen when Celine gazes at me with a mischievous smile playing around her lips.
I gaze outside, sighting the descending sun in the far distance, shielded by tall trees. I was in the dungeon for at least four hours, which explains my nausea. She points to a chair, and Gusto leads me to sit as my legs wobble.
He nods once at Celine and marches out. Celine eyes me, brows furrowed slightly, and then she turns to pick up a plate of cereal and milk. My stomach growls at the sight, but I shake my head in refusal.
“Where’s Maya?” I whisper, swallowing as I salivate.
“Eat it.” Celine’s voice is firm.
I shake my head again, and Celine smirks. Maya comes in with my meal every day, and Celine always protests that she feeds me too well, so I know she’s up to no good for offering me my favorite morning meal.
“Eat this or starve till tomorrow.” Celine’s voice rises.
A knot tightens in my chest at the thought, and I hold the spoon dipped in the cereal, lifting it slowly with my shaky hand. My nostrils flare at a faint smell of wolfsbane, and my eyes stretch as I jerk my head left, gazing at Celine.
“What?” Celine points at the plate. “My patience is slim, so eat.”
I swallow hard and lift the spoon again. The smell is now gone, but I can swear it was wolfsbane.
‘My babies.’ The thought pierces my mind.
Suddenly, muffled footfalls approach the kitchen, and my heartbeat speeds up as I drop the spoon quickly, and it hits the plate with a clang. I gaze at the door in hopes of seeing my escape from Celine.
Maya enters the kitchen, and my heart dances as I sigh softly. She freezes, gazing at Celine, then me, and her
eyes widen as they settle on the plate before me.
‘She knows.’
CHAPTER ELEVENLORI“What?” I ask, blinking.Vince heaves, and my heart hammers heavily as a sour feeling fills my stomach.“One of the Supremes met me when I brought you home,” Vince begins. “Claudine, she met me in the parking lot.”I lean my head forward slightly, nodding for Vince to continue. He shrugs slightly. “All she said was that your parents would have never allowed any of this to happen.” “My parents are alive.” I furrow my brows.Vince nods once. “Yes, I know that, and that’s what confuses me.”I turn to Lola, whose lips form a straight line as she sighs, and my heart starts to thump heavily. I shake my head gently, facing Vince. “No.” I try to convince myself, but it’s futile. “It can’t be.”Vince places his hand on my left shoulder. “Please, relax.” His voice is low. “We have one week until the next summoning, so we can find some answers before then.”My thumping heart eases slightly, and I gaze down at my stomach, blinking multiple times. My mind immediately wanders t
VINCEI quickly bend to catch Lori just before she hits the ground. Her face becomes faintly pale, and my heart hammers, filling my ears. I raise my head to face the Supremes. “This is exactly why she should never return to that hellhole,” I yell, and my gaze circles them.I rise, carrying Lori in my arms. The urgency to get her conscious pumps adrenaline so strongly that I turn sharply and dash to the door. Barrett moves towards me, and I growl at him not to dare. “One week.” A loud voice echoes into the silence, making me halt halfway through the door.I turn to face the Supremes with my brows furrowed, and my gaze settles on Garf, whose face is set in a tight frown.“This summoning continues in one week.” Garf barks, and all six of them stand to leave. I swirl and storm off to the elevator, burying my anger at Garf. The ground floor elevator opens, and I hurry in a slow jog, careful not to shake Lori excessively. I kick the door into the parking lot but freeze for a second when I
LORI“No way.” Vince protests with knitted brows.“I need to go, Vince.” My voice is firm.Vince sighs and looks at Lola, expecting some support.“They need to know everything Barrett did,” Lola says.Vince exhales and looks at me, parting his lips to speak.“And it’s better if Lori’s there to tell it,” Lola adds, interrupting Vince.Vince’s head snaps back to Lola, his brows furrowing slightly, and his shoulders slump in defeat. Sighing, he says, “Well, OK.” Lola's lips raise in a mock smirk. “I know you hate losing, but this is Lori’s fight.”“We leave after breakfast tomorrow.” Vince stands. “I have to take care of some things tonight.” He glances at Welsh and Levi, and they follow as he leaves. The rest of the evening is mostly silent for me, and when Vince returns, he sits on the balcony until very late, just staring straight ahead. I lie awake, swirling restlessly for long, but dozing off eventually. The morning comes rushing like water from a pressured tap nozzle, and Vince is
LORII’m just angry—angry at myself for believing I can be saved. Vince was bold enough to interfere in the first place, and I’m grateful for that. Levi drives quietly, stealing peeks at me occasionally. We cross Malrock’s border, and my heart drowns. I place both my hands underneath my stomach and blow a shaky breath. ‘This is it.’ As if sensing my pain, Levi’s shoulders rise and fall as he heaves, and his fist tightens on the steering wheel as we approach a curve on the road.“Stop.” I blurt out suddenly. Levi turns to me with knitted brows. “What?”“Stop, please.” My words are rushed, and I fix a stern gaze on Levi’s.Levi brakes, and we lean forward as the car reaches a quick standstill. Levi glances at me, the unspoken question written on his face. “I’ll walk the rest of the way.” My voice is low, and I turn my head to fix my gaze ahead.“But…” Levi starts, but I interrupt.“It’s just up ahead.” “No, it’s not.” Levi protests, looking down at my stomach, then at the road ahead
VINCEA legion of questions swarms me on our quiet drive back home. As the car approaches the Alpha house, where I’m supposed to alight, I see Lola standing with Lori outside the door.I quickly turn away, eyes straight, and gesture forward with my hand to Welsh, who throttles, heading for the parking lot. Lola walks towards us, but the car revs past her. A sour taste fills my mouth—guilt for not offering an explanation, but she’ll forgive me. Welsh and Levi stay mute and frozen beside the car as I march to my office. I sit on my chair, my head clasped between my hands as I scramble for an excuse to disobey the Supremes. A gentle knock on the door startles me; it creaks open, and Lola emerges. My gaze moves over her shoulder, but she shuts the door.“She stayed back,” Lola says, pointing backwards.I blow a loud breath, an unusual unease filling me as I think of talking to Lori. “Garf was there,” I state, gaze fixed on Lola’s.Lola nods, exhaling softly. “Yeah, Welsh told me everythi
VINCE“Yo, take it easy, man.” Levi, my third in command, speaks from the back seat.I ignore and grunt softly as I step on the throttle. Levi falls silent, and I’m grateful he finally understands. Welsh, my right-hand man and best friend, sits quietly beside me. I appreciate his understanding of my fury at this time.My next words should be me roaring at Barrett while punching his face. Who would abuse a pregnant woman this much?‘He deserves to die.’ Conan growls loudly in my head, and I’m pleased by his support on this. But a thought flashes in my mind. A feeling I hate to acknowledge. What if I lose control? What if I end up hurting an innocent person?Only Barrett should pay, along with any other wolf who’s aware of it.
