VINCE
I shouldn’t be here.
Being the strongest alpha in the south doesn’t make me above the law, but my will to bend those laws to their farthest always gets the best of me. I’m investigating a rumor I heard about Barrett from one of my men, and I intend to come and go discreetly.
Conan, my wolf, crouches, watching Barrett chase a pregnant woman predatorily. I tighten my grip on Conan, who wants to sprint over to help the woman when Barrett slams her into a tree.
Barrett lifts the now-wailing woman slowly, his hand fisted in her hair. The scent of blood hits Conan’s nostrils just as he sees the blood trailing down her leg.
A low growl escapes Conan, and my control wanes as he takes a projectile leap, landing before Barrett. A growl rumbles through Barrett, and I quickly shift back to prevent Conan from lunging at him.
“What are you doing here, Vince?” Barrett inquires.
“She’s bleeding.” I point at the woman.
“Like I don’t already know.” Barrett tightens his hold on the woman’s hair, and she sobs.
Conan pushes to the surface, eager to rip Barrett’s hand off her, but I push him back in my head. A bloodbath would only exacerbate the situation further, and that’s what’ll happen if I shift.
“She needs a doctor.” I blurt out. “Her baby might be in danger.”
Barrett laughs dryly, gazing at the woman repulsively. “That’s where she’s going.”
He faces me. “You can return to your St…”
“Don’t you dare, Barrett.” I snarl.
“Strays.” That’s what my pack of lone wolves is called since I refuse to name us, but we’re the strongest in the country—no one who dared to call us that has lived to breathe their next. Barrett knows better, which means his anger has overwhelmed him.
“Get off my land,” Barrett says as he strides towards me, dragging the woman behind him. “This isn’t your business.”
‘He’s right,’ I reason.
‘She might lose her child.’ Conan yells in my head, but I freeze.
Barrett walks past me, but the woman clutches my wrist hard.
“Please.” She whispers, and my gaze meets hers. “Help me.”
Conan snarls, and I free him to rise to the surface. The woman’s eyes widen as my bad eye, which is usually closed, opens and glows like the good one. Barrett tugs at her, but I grab her wrist, holding her in place.
“You can’t take her back, Barrett.” I raise my head.
“And you’ll stop me?” Barrett’s protests, staring me down dismissively.
“If I have to.” I fire back confidently.
Suddenly, a grey wolf emerges behind Barrett, then two more from behind me. I eye the wolves behind me and return my gaze to Barrett.
“This is your challenge?” I muse, a smug grin on my lips.
I hear rustlings behind me and turn to see three wolves join the first two, then I face Barrett again to see two wolves beside the grey wolf. All their fangs are bare in wild snarls, and Barrett's proud smile mirrors his assurance of victory.
“Brute force won’t help you.” He boasts.
An idea forms in my head, and I don’t give it a second’s thought before muttering.
“I’ll take her as payment for my debt,” I square my shoulders.
I observe the woman—I still don’t know her name—and her brows furrow in confusion. The grey wolf behind Barrett shifts into his beta, Gusto, who walks up to Barrett.
“This situation is more complex than your debt, Vince,” Gusto says.
“It’s Alpha Vince to you, fool,” I growl low, locking eyes with Gusto, who lowers his. “And it’s a blood debt,”
Barrett slurps as droplets of sweat begin to crowd his forehead, and he glances at Gusto and the other wolves. I look down at the woman who has now wiped her face, studying our exchange.
“She’s my mate.” Barrett declares. “And the baby’s mine.”
I glance at Barrett, then at the woman as my lips part slightly in realization. It’s Barrett’s mate, Lori, but my wolf should’ve felt it if she’s bonded. I haven’t heard of her for a while, and now it’s clear why.
Lori seems equally surprised as she gapes at Barrett. My grip on her loosens slowly, and my glowing eyes dim as Conan recedes.
“Was,” Lori speaks loudly, and Barrett’s eyes widen.
“I was your mate until six months and four days ago.” She adds.
Conan whirls, mesmerized by the defiant touch in her voice, which has never happened with any female. I glare at Barrett, whose brows are knitted.
“That settles it, then.” My voice is laced with pride. “She’s coming with me.”
I help Lori stand, looking at every wolf with their ears up, waiting for their alpha’s orders to either pounce on me or to accept defeat.
“I’ll come for what’s left of her things by tomorrow,” I tell Barrett.
I turn to leave with Lori, and she stumbles. Instinctively, I lift her, and the scent of her blood floods my senses. I push back the urge to drop her and break Barrett’s arm.
As I step onto the road heading in the direction of where I parked my car, I glance at Lori, about to speak, but she whispers.
“My babies.” Then her head slowly la
nds on my chest as she blacks out.
“Shit.” The words echo in my head as I dash to my car.
CHAPTER ELEVENLORI“What?” I ask, blinking.Vince heaves, and my heart hammers heavily as a sour feeling fills my stomach.“One of the Supremes met me when I brought you home,” Vince begins. “Claudine, she met me in the parking lot.”I lean my head forward slightly, nodding for Vince to continue. He shrugs slightly. “All she said was that your parents would have never allowed any of this to happen.” “My parents are alive.” I furrow my brows.Vince nods once. “Yes, I know that, and that’s what confuses me.”I turn to Lola, whose lips form a straight line as she sighs, and my heart starts to thump heavily. I shake my head gently, facing Vince. “No.” I try to convince myself, but it’s futile. “It can’t be.”Vince places his hand on my left shoulder. “Please, relax.” His voice is low. “We have one week until the next summoning, so we can find some answers before then.”My thumping heart eases slightly, and I gaze down at my stomach, blinking multiple times. My mind immediately wanders t
VINCEI quickly bend to catch Lori just before she hits the ground. Her face becomes faintly pale, and my heart hammers, filling my ears. I raise my head to face the Supremes. “This is exactly why she should never return to that hellhole,” I yell, and my gaze circles them.I rise, carrying Lori in my arms. The urgency to get her conscious pumps adrenaline so strongly that I turn sharply and dash to the door. Barrett moves towards me, and I growl at him not to dare. “One week.” A loud voice echoes into the silence, making me halt halfway through the door.I turn to face the Supremes with my brows furrowed, and my gaze settles on Garf, whose face is set in a tight frown.“This summoning continues in one week.” Garf barks, and all six of them stand to leave. I swirl and storm off to the elevator, burying my anger at Garf. The ground floor elevator opens, and I hurry in a slow jog, careful not to shake Lori excessively. I kick the door into the parking lot but freeze for a second when I
LORI“No way.” Vince protests with knitted brows.“I need to go, Vince.” My voice is firm.Vince sighs and looks at Lola, expecting some support.“They need to know everything Barrett did,” Lola says.Vince exhales and looks at me, parting his lips to speak.“And it’s better if Lori’s there to tell it,” Lola adds, interrupting Vince.Vince’s head snaps back to Lola, his brows furrowing slightly, and his shoulders slump in defeat. Sighing, he says, “Well, OK.” Lola's lips raise in a mock smirk. “I know you hate losing, but this is Lori’s fight.”“We leave after breakfast tomorrow.” Vince stands. “I have to take care of some things tonight.” He glances at Welsh and Levi, and they follow as he leaves. The rest of the evening is mostly silent for me, and when Vince returns, he sits on the balcony until very late, just staring straight ahead. I lie awake, swirling restlessly for long, but dozing off eventually. The morning comes rushing like water from a pressured tap nozzle, and Vince is
LORII’m just angry—angry at myself for believing I can be saved. Vince was bold enough to interfere in the first place, and I’m grateful for that. Levi drives quietly, stealing peeks at me occasionally. We cross Malrock’s border, and my heart drowns. I place both my hands underneath my stomach and blow a shaky breath. ‘This is it.’ As if sensing my pain, Levi’s shoulders rise and fall as he heaves, and his fist tightens on the steering wheel as we approach a curve on the road.“Stop.” I blurt out suddenly. Levi turns to me with knitted brows. “What?”“Stop, please.” My words are rushed, and I fix a stern gaze on Levi’s.Levi brakes, and we lean forward as the car reaches a quick standstill. Levi glances at me, the unspoken question written on his face. “I’ll walk the rest of the way.” My voice is low, and I turn my head to fix my gaze ahead.“But…” Levi starts, but I interrupt.“It’s just up ahead.” “No, it’s not.” Levi protests, looking down at my stomach, then at the road ahead
VINCEA legion of questions swarms me on our quiet drive back home. As the car approaches the Alpha house, where I’m supposed to alight, I see Lola standing with Lori outside the door.I quickly turn away, eyes straight, and gesture forward with my hand to Welsh, who throttles, heading for the parking lot. Lola walks towards us, but the car revs past her. A sour taste fills my mouth—guilt for not offering an explanation, but she’ll forgive me. Welsh and Levi stay mute and frozen beside the car as I march to my office. I sit on my chair, my head clasped between my hands as I scramble for an excuse to disobey the Supremes. A gentle knock on the door startles me; it creaks open, and Lola emerges. My gaze moves over her shoulder, but she shuts the door.“She stayed back,” Lola says, pointing backwards.I blow a loud breath, an unusual unease filling me as I think of talking to Lori. “Garf was there,” I state, gaze fixed on Lola’s.Lola nods, exhaling softly. “Yeah, Welsh told me everythi
VINCE“Yo, take it easy, man.” Levi, my third in command, speaks from the back seat.I ignore and grunt softly as I step on the throttle. Levi falls silent, and I’m grateful he finally understands. Welsh, my right-hand man and best friend, sits quietly beside me. I appreciate his understanding of my fury at this time.My next words should be me roaring at Barrett while punching his face. Who would abuse a pregnant woman this much?‘He deserves to die.’ Conan growls loudly in my head, and I’m pleased by his support on this. But a thought flashes in my mind. A feeling I hate to acknowledge. What if I lose control? What if I end up hurting an innocent person?Only Barrett should pay, along with any other wolf who’s aware of it. My knuckles whiten as I clench the steering wheel. As I turn the bend before Malrock’s main gate, I’m grateful that one of the pack members just started closing the gate.My fury simmers like a volcano ready to erupt when the man steps in the way, hand raised, si
