“Yo, take it easy, man.” Levi, my third in command, speaks from the back seat.
I ignore and grunt softly as I step on the throttle. Levi falls silent, and I’m grateful he finally understands. Welsh, my right-hand man and best friend, sits quietly beside me. I appreciate his understanding of my fury at this time.
My next words should be me roaring at Barrett while punching his face. Who would abuse a pregnant woman this much?
‘He deserves to die.’ Conan growls loudly in my head, and I’m pleased by his support on this.
But a thought flashes in my mind. A feeling I hate to acknowledge.
What if I lose control?
What if I end up hurting an innocent person?
Only Barrett should pay, along with any other wolf who’s aware of it. My knuckles whiten as I clench the steering wheel. As I turn the bend before Malrock’s main gate, I’m grateful that one of the pack members just started closing the gate.
My fury simmers like a volcano ready to erupt when the man steps in the way, hand raised, signalling for me to stop. Without hesitation, I slam the throttle, and the engine growls in response. The bulky figure leaps aside, barely avoiding an impact.
I cover the path to Barrett’s house hastily, and the car jerks to a stop as I hit the brakes.
“Barrett!” I yell.
Levi says something, but I ignore him as I march toward the front door. I approach the stairs leading to his front porch and consider for a moment how deserted the place is, but the doors swing open with a soft creak. Two bulky men step out, and Barrett follows behind them.
“You bastard,” I growl, striding toward him.
A figure steps out from behind Barrett, and I halt, blinking multiple times. It’s Garf, a member of the Supremes.
“Hello, Vincent.” Garf’s husky voice greets.
“Hello, Garf,” I respond with knitted brows.
The Supremes never get personally involved with any alpha to avoid bias in their judgments, so why is Garf here?
I don’t have time to ponder on it as Garf’s wrinkled lips curl up in a grin. The way he and Barrett stare at me, unfazed by my obvious rage, confirms my suspicion: Garf knows about Lori.
But how could they predict when I’d come?
“It’s a surprise seeing you here.” Garf speaks dubiously.
“I’d say the same for you.”
A woman emerges from behind Garf, and her eyebrows tighten as she gazes at me, but I ignore her.
I step closer. “Are you happy now?” I gaze at Barrett. “She lost one of the babies.”
Barrett’s brows tighten, and I read his shock.
“Yes, there were two, but I‘m not surprised your dumbass didn’t know.”
The two guards move toward me, but Barrett raises a hand, and they halt. Barrett locks eyes with me for a moment, then turns to Garf.
Barrett faces me again, but his eyes are darker. “I want her back immediately.”
I scoff. “You must think this is a joke.”
“She’s carrying my child?” Barrett counters.
“I don’t give a damn.”
“You should.” The woman says passively.
I glance at her briefly and return my gaze to Barrett, ignoring her again.
Barrett tilts his head to his left slightly. “This wasn’t your fight, Vince, and it’s still not.”
“She’s under my care now.” I blurt out. “And you’re not her mate anymore.”
“I want her back.”
“My blood debt nullifies your claim on her.”
“It’s not superior to his right as the child’s father,” Garf says, stepping forward.
I scowl at Garf as my fury elevates. If the Supremes weren’t protected by an ancient magic that makes them untouchable, I would’ve snapped his neck for supporting Barrett in the first place.
“The baby that he didn’t know existed?”
“It’s a Supreme order, Vincent.” Garf declares, “Bring her back at once.”
“You can’t do that.”
“No, the council did.” Garf states and strolls back into the house.
I swivel slowly as Barrett and every other person join Garf inside and shut the door behind them. Welsh and Levi march to me.
“What do we do now?” Welsh inquires.
CHAPTER ELEVENLORI“What?” I ask, blinking.Vince heaves, and my heart hammers heavily as a sour feeling fills my stomach.“One of the Supremes met me when I brought you home,” Vince begins. “Claudine, she met me in the parking lot.”I lean my head forward slightly, nodding for Vince to continue. He shrugs slightly. “All she said was that your parents would have never allowed any of this to happen.” “My parents are alive.” I furrow my brows.Vince nods once. “Yes, I know that, and that’s what confuses me.”I turn to Lola, whose lips form a straight line as she sighs, and my heart starts to thump heavily. I shake my head gently, facing Vince. “No.” I try to convince myself, but it’s futile. “It can’t be.”Vince places his hand on my left shoulder. “Please, relax.” His voice is low. “We have one week until the next summoning, so we can find some answers before then.”My thumping heart eases slightly, and I gaze down at my stomach, blinking multiple times. My mind immediately wanders t
VINCEI quickly bend to catch Lori just before she hits the ground. Her face becomes faintly pale, and my heart hammers, filling my ears. I raise my head to face the Supremes. “This is exactly why she should never return to that hellhole,” I yell, and my gaze circles them.I rise, carrying Lori in my arms. The urgency to get her conscious pumps adrenaline so strongly that I turn sharply and dash to the door. Barrett moves towards me, and I growl at him not to dare. “One week.” A loud voice echoes into the silence, making me halt halfway through the door.I turn to face the Supremes with my brows furrowed, and my gaze settles on Garf, whose face is set in a tight frown.“This summoning continues in one week.” Garf barks, and all six of them stand to leave. I swirl and storm off to the elevator, burying my anger at Garf. The ground floor elevator opens, and I hurry in a slow jog, careful not to shake Lori excessively. I kick the door into the parking lot but freeze for a second when I
LORI“No way.” Vince protests with knitted brows.“I need to go, Vince.” My voice is firm.Vince sighs and looks at Lola, expecting some support.“They need to know everything Barrett did,” Lola says.Vince exhales and looks at me, parting his lips to speak.“And it’s better if Lori’s there to tell it,” Lola adds, interrupting Vince.Vince’s head snaps back to Lola, his brows furrowing slightly, and his shoulders slump in defeat. Sighing, he says, “Well, OK.” Lola's lips raise in a mock smirk. “I know you hate losing, but this is Lori’s fight.”“We leave after breakfast tomorrow.” Vince stands. “I have to take care of some things tonight.” He glances at Welsh and Levi, and they follow as he leaves. The rest of the evening is mostly silent for me, and when Vince returns, he sits on the balcony until very late, just staring straight ahead. I lie awake, swirling restlessly for long, but dozing off eventually. The morning comes rushing like water from a pressured tap nozzle, and Vince is
LORII’m just angry—angry at myself for believing I can be saved. Vince was bold enough to interfere in the first place, and I’m grateful for that. Levi drives quietly, stealing peeks at me occasionally. We cross Malrock’s border, and my heart drowns. I place both my hands underneath my stomach and blow a shaky breath. ‘This is it.’ As if sensing my pain, Levi’s shoulders rise and fall as he heaves, and his fist tightens on the steering wheel as we approach a curve on the road.“Stop.” I blurt out suddenly. Levi turns to me with knitted brows. “What?”“Stop, please.” My words are rushed, and I fix a stern gaze on Levi’s.Levi brakes, and we lean forward as the car reaches a quick standstill. Levi glances at me, the unspoken question written on his face. “I’ll walk the rest of the way.” My voice is low, and I turn my head to fix my gaze ahead.“But…” Levi starts, but I interrupt.“It’s just up ahead.” “No, it’s not.” Levi protests, looking down at my stomach, then at the road ahead
VINCEA legion of questions swarms me on our quiet drive back home. As the car approaches the Alpha house, where I’m supposed to alight, I see Lola standing with Lori outside the door.I quickly turn away, eyes straight, and gesture forward with my hand to Welsh, who throttles, heading for the parking lot. Lola walks towards us, but the car revs past her. A sour taste fills my mouth—guilt for not offering an explanation, but she’ll forgive me. Welsh and Levi stay mute and frozen beside the car as I march to my office. I sit on my chair, my head clasped between my hands as I scramble for an excuse to disobey the Supremes. A gentle knock on the door startles me; it creaks open, and Lola emerges. My gaze moves over her shoulder, but she shuts the door.“She stayed back,” Lola says, pointing backwards.I blow a loud breath, an unusual unease filling me as I think of talking to Lori. “Garf was there,” I state, gaze fixed on Lola’s.Lola nods, exhaling softly. “Yeah, Welsh told me everythi
