FAZER LOGINThe heat was gone on the fourth morning.
I woke up and the room was not too hot, not too cold. The sheets were dry. The sweet smell was gone. My neck didn't throb anymore. I could think clearly for the first time in three days.
I was lying on furs in the hallway doorway, not in bed. Snow had melted around us. Kael was still there, but in man form now, bare chest, black pants, hair wet from ice melting, holding me in his arms, asleep sitting up against the wall. His head had fallen back, mouth open a little, snoring soft. He looked younger asleep.
Beta Mara stood over us with a fur blanket, shaking her head but smiling.
"Both fools," she whispered. "Alpha in ice, Luna in thin sheet. But heat is gone. Scent is clean. You did well, both of you."
She helped me stand. My feet were okay, pink, not blue. The cold snow had actually helped.
Kael woke when I moved, gold eyes snapping open, instantly checking my face, my neck, my hands.
"Elise? Heat?" he asked, voice rough from river and snow.
"Gone," I said. "I'm... I'm me again."
He let out a long breath, like he had held it for three days, and pressed his forehead to my knee, because that was closest, still sitting.
"Good," he muttered. "Good, because I was going crazy. Three days in river, wolf wanted to break door, I had to bite river rocks to stay."
He had bite marks on his own knuckles. He had bitten himself to not come inside.
Mara pulled me away gently. "Let Alpha eat, Luna. And you eat. Healer says after heat, human Luna is weak. Need meat and honey and sleep in real bed."
Kael ate. I ate. We didn't talk about what I said in the snow — _will you mark me when heat gone?_ — because now heat was gone, and I had to say it again with clear head, or it didn't count. That's wolf law, Mara told me. Mark must be asked for when not in heat, not in fever.
I spent the day in Luna's room, washing, brushing hair, wearing new dress Mara made — grey wool, soft, not white dress, not torn. Luna dress, with wolf fur around sleeves. It fit.
At sunset, Council came. Elder woman and Elder Corvin.
Elder woman looked at me, sniffed air.
"Heat gone," she said, nodding. "Good. Human Luna heat is strong, but short. Now you are clean. Alpha is also clean, he ate and slept in den today after river. So marking can be done tonight, if both want. Moon is half tonight — good moon for human marking, not too bright, not too dark."
Elder Corvin banged staff. "If Luna wants marking, Alpha must mark gentle, as promised. If Luna does not want, no mark, she stays Luna still. What does Luna want?"
Everyone looked at me. Kael stood at edge of room, bare chest, hair tied back, gold eyes black with worry, claws in and out, in and out. He didn't want to pressure.
I remembered what I said in thin sheet, forehead to icy wolf forehead.
I wanted mark then, in heat. Did I want now, not in heat?
I looked at Kael — scars on chest from old rut fights, bite marks on knuckles from river rocks, gold eyes that waited 10 years alone, that slept outside my door in snow, that broke Trial law for me.
In village, marking was story — wolf bites and owns you.
But here, marking was promise — you are mine, I am yours, we share life, 200 years.
"Yes," I said, voice small but steady. "I want marking. Not because heat. Because I want to be his Luna fully. And because... because I want to hear his wolf, like you said I would after."
Elder woman smiled, first time I saw her smile.
"Good. Then we leave. Marking is private, between mates. No pack watches. Beta Mara will wait outside with healer, in case human needs help. Alpha, remember — human neck soft. Bite slow. Don't break bone. Don't drink too much blood. One bite, deep enough for scar, not deep enough to kill."
Kael nodded, once, jaw tight.
Council left. Mara left, leaving bowl of warm water and clean white cloths and honey paste.
Door closed. Bar locked — but from inside this time, by me, not to keep him out, but to keep us private.
Only fire, furs, grey wool dress, and Kael and me.
He didn't move for a long time, just stared at my neck, side where pulse beats.
"Elise," he whispered, "you can still say no, even now. Even if door locked. Even if Council said yes. If you say stop mid-bite, I stop. Promise on Lira and on you."
"I know," I said. My hands shook. "I'm scared."
"I know," he said. "I am scared too. I never marked human. Only Lira, and she was wolf, strong. If I hurt you..."
"You won't," I said, because I believed it now. He bit his own knuckles to not hurt me in heat. He wouldn't hurt me in marking.
He came closer, slow, kneeling in front of me where I sat on bed, so we were same height. He took my hands, his huge hands warm, claws carefully in.
"Grey dress looks good," he said, trying to make me less scared, small talk.
"It's your fur," I said, touching sleeve.
"Our fur now," he said.
He tucked hair behind my ear, exposing neck — right side, where wolves mark.
My pulse was fast, rabbit fast.
"Look at me, not at teeth," he said softly. "Look at eyes, little mate."
I looked at gold eyes. They were bright, but soft, not black.
"When I bite, it will hurt," he said honest. "Like knife, but hot. Then cold after, because my venom — wolf venom — goes in to heal and to bond. Then you will feel my feelings, like echo. And you will smell like me, pine and smoke, so no male touches you again."
"Will you feel my feelings too?" I asked.
"Yes," he said, smiling a little, fangs showing. "Every time you are scared, I will feel. Every time you are happy, I will feel. So you can't hide from me anymore."
"I don't want to hide," I whispered.
That made his gold eyes flash bright.
He leaned in, slow, giving me time, nose touching neck first, smelling, breathing.
"You smell like honey still, a little," he murmured against skin. "My Luna honey."
Then he opened mouth, fangs big, and I saw teeth, sharp, made to kill bears, and I flinched, but didn't pull away.
"Ready?" he whispered against neck.
"Ready," I whispered, holding his shoulders, grey wool dress bunching.
He bit.
Pain — yes, like Elder woman said, knife but hot, deep, teeth breaking skin, breaking small muscle, blood — my blood — hot on neck and on his mouth. I gasped, hands clutching his shoulders, nails digging.
He growled against my neck, but not angry growl, holding growl, trying to be gentle, trying to be slow like he promised.
I felt blood, but also felt cold — venom — going in, like ice water in veins, making pain less after first seconds.
He didn't drink much — just enough for bond — then licked, big wolf tongue, cleaning, sealing.
He pulled back, mouth bloody — my blood — gold eyes black now, worried, checking bite.
Bite was there — two deep holes, plus smaller teeth marks, crescent shape, bleeding but not too much, already slowing because venom helps clot.
I touched it, fingers bloody.
"It... it hurts," I whispered, tears in eyes, but not screaming. Wolf females scream, but I didn't.
"I know," he said, grabbing white cloth, pressing gentle, putting honey paste like healer taught. "I know, little mate, I know, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."
He kept saying sorry, forehead to my forehead, holding cloth to neck.
But then — second after pain — feeling came.
Not my feeling. His.
Worry, huge worry, like mountain — _did I bite too deep, will she live, please live_ — and love, storm love, like he said, big and warm and scared, and relief — _she is marked, she is mine, no one can take_.
I felt him, inside chest, like second heart.
"Kael?" I whispered, surprised. "I feel you... you are worried..."
His gold eyes went wide.
"You feel bond?" he asked.
"Yes... you are... you are scared I will hate bite..."
He laughed then, wet laugh, gold tears again.
"Never thought human Luna would feel bond so fast. Wolf females take hours. You feel in seconds. Because you are strong. My strong Luna."
He pressed cloth again, then took my hand and placed it on his chest, over heart.
"Feel my heart? It's yours now. Mark goes both ways. You marked me too, with your blood."
I felt his heart, loud, fast, under scarred chest, and my own heart, fast, and they beat together, same rhythm, after marking.
We sat there, on Luna bed, grey dress bloody on shoulder, white cloths, honey paste, fire burning, door barred from inside, and outside, Beta Mara and healer waited, listening for scream that didn't come, because human Luna didn't scream.
After a while, bleeding stopped, and Kael licked once more, gentle, to seal, and wrapped thin fur around my neck to keep warm.
"Tomorrow, pack will smell my scent on you and bow deeper," he said quietly, holding me, my head on his bare chest, my bloody hand on his heart. "And you will live 200 years with me, if you want. And no heat again until pup weaned, so you can rest."
Pup again. But now, with bond, I felt his fear about pup too — not just wanting, but scared I would die carrying.
"It's okay," I whispered, feeling his fear as my own. "We will figure pup later."
"We will," he said, kissing top of my head, not neck, because neck hurt.
We fell asleep like that, sitting up, marked, blood on both of us, sharing one heartbeat, while outside, pack howled — not hunting howl, but happy howl, because Alpha finally marked again after 10 years, and human Luna lived through it.
We didn't sleep again.Kael didn't let me help move nets — healer sat by fire and glared every time I stood — but I sat at door of Luna room, wrapped in big brown fur, watching pack work in blue moonlight.Old wolves dragged fishing nets from storage hut. Nets were grey, knotted from river vine, smelling like fish and old water. Holes big enough for hand, but strong — made to catch ice fish that fight.Young boys who dug snow traps yesterday now dug again, but not holes. They dug shallow trenches behind bent pine traps, on east path, where North would run back."Why trenches?" I asked Mara when she came to warm her bloody leg by our fire. Her wolf form had healed leg mostly, but man form still red.Mara smiled, tired. "For Luna's feet. You said river rock is safe but cold. So Alpha digs trench from east path to river rock, covered with branches, so you can crawl without North seeing. Like rabbit hole."Rabbit hole. For Luna.Kael came at midnight, bare chest steaming, snow in tied hai
Finn didn't come back by noon.By sunset, he didn't come back.By moonrise, Mara came back alone. She came in wolf form first — grey, panting, snow stuck in fur, blood on back leg — then shifted at door of Luna room, naked, shaking, not from cold.Kael was outside before I could stand, bare chest in snow, claws out, gold eyes black."Where is pup?" he said, voice that made snow fall off roofs.Mara coughed, holding leg. "He is with North. They kept him."Through bond, I felt Kael's wolf — _rip, kill, go down mountain now_.I ran out, grey dress, no shoes again, healer shouting behind, and grabbed his arm."Wait," I said. "Mara — did he lie? Did he tell?"Mara looked at me, eyes wet, and nodded, then shook head. "He did lie. Perfect lie. I heard from rocks. He told Joren east path empty, mountain path full of 20 traps. Joren believed. But then — North Alpha, Rorik — he came."Snow went quiet.Kael went still.Mara continued, voice shaking. "Rorik smelled Luna's fur on Finn. Your fur, L
Finn didn't sleep after.I know because through bond, I didn't sleep either — Kael didn't. His wolf paced all night, even though his body lay still on furs, my head on his chest. At grey morning, before fire was hot, Kael was already outside, tying hair back, claws out, digging. Not mountain path this time. East path.I woke, mark tight, not itchy, and pulled grey dress on, white fur around shoulders. Healer came, checked mark, honey still there, good, closed."Where is Finn?" I asked."With Mara," healer said. "He is scared to see Alpha."I went outside. Snow had started again, soft, thin flakes. Not heavy like before.East path was the small one — only wide enough for 3 wolves, not 50. It went through pine trees, around big rocks, down to lower mountain where North Pack lives.Kael and 10 older wolves were there, not digging holes. They were doing different trap.Beta Mara showed me, whispering."Yesterday snow trap is hole. Today Luna trap is — not hole."She pointed. Older wo
I woke because Kael was not breathing. Not dead — holding breath. Like wolf listening. His bare chest was stiff under my cheek, his arm still around me, but his gold eyes were open in dark, looking at fur-covered door.Outside, wind was too quiet. No snow traps creaking. No wolves snoring in nearby huts. Just quiet that felt wrong."What?" I whispered, hand touching his chest. He put finger to my lips, very gently, so I would not speak. Through bond, I felt it — _quiet, listen, danger close_.He moved slow, pulling furs off me, pulling black pants on without sound. He didn't tie hair. He left it loose, so he could hear better. He pointed to my neck — mark covered in honey paste from healer, not black sap now. "Stay. Hide scent under furs. Don't come."Then he was gone, out the door, bare feet in snow, no sound.I waited, heart loud. Luna room was warm, fire low. I pulled white fur over my head like he said, hiding mark that now smelled like pine and him again — strong after he licked
I didn't stay in Luna room.Next morning, Kael woke before fire was hot, pulling on black pants, tying hair back, gold eyes black with planning."Where are you going?" I asked, sitting up, mark itching less now, more tight, like skin pulling."River," he said. "And mountain path where North Pack must come. We set traps. You stay, healer says no walking much today, mark still soft."But through bond, I felt something else — he didn't want me to stay because mark soft. He wanted me to stay because Elder Corvin was still talking about trading me for cattle, and he didn't want me to hear.I stood, grey dress no longer bloody — Mara washed it at night, left clean one, same grey wool, fur sleeves — and touched his bare arm."I am Luna," I said. "Luna doesn't hide while Alpha sets traps for war that is about her. I come."He looked at my neck — mark red but closed, no blood — and at my feet — pink, not blue after snow — and sighed."Human Luna is stubborn," he muttered, but I felt proud th
Kael didn't sleep after reading the letter. He sat on edge of Luna bed, bare back to me, black pants, claws out, staring at fire. His bond feeling was like storm — anger, worry, planning, all mixed. I sat behind him, grey dress still bloody on shoulder, hand on his back, feeling scars under skin. "You need to call them tonight," I whispered. "Not tomorrow." He turned, gold eyes tired. "How you know?" "I feel you," I said, touching my itching mark. "You are thinking — call tonight, or Rorik will think we are scared." He nodded. "My Luna feels too much. Wolf females don't feel Alpha thoughts until months. You feel in one day." "Because I am human?" I asked. "Because you are mine," he said. He stood, pulled black shirt on, and opened door. Beta Mara was still outside, with two young wolves — boys, maybe 16, thin, holding spears. "Call pack," Kael said, voice Alpha now, not soft Luna voice. Deep, loud, making floor shake a little. "All wolves, Stoneclaw, to
