LILLIAN POV

I sat curled up on the sofa, with my body present, but my mind far away from me, with the same questions echoing, playing like a calling drum. Had Drake gone back to Sharon in my absence? They had been inseparable in high school and every one knew that. A ten year history did not just vanish because of a mate bond. What if, despite everything he had said to me, there was still something between them? A thread I could not see?

I did not know what to feel. I just sat there feeling lost in between anger, sadness, or this sick, twisting jealousy that made my stomach roll.

Suddenly, I felt him close to me. Not just his presence, but the warmth of his body as Andre sat beside me. He did not leave the usual polite space between us, instead he sat so close that our legs touched from our hip to knee, and the touch was electric, which pulled me forcefully from my thoughts.

“Your mind seem to be somewhere far away.” He murmured softly, “did you like the flowers?”

I turned to him and

ANDRE POVThe young messenger led me down to the main hall, and there she stood. Willow. My childhood best friend. She was looking at a big painting of the forest, with her back to me. She had a little frown on her face as she studied it.My feet stopped moving, for it was really her. After all this time. Then she turned around slowly, like she felt me there. When she saw me, her frown melted instantly into the biggest, happiest smile. “Andre,” she said softly. Then memories hit me hard. Willow Bennett. We were friends since we were babies, before I even met Drake and Lucas. We did everything together. People used to joke that the Moon Goddess meant for us to me mates, and we would just laugh. Then, when we were in eleventh grade, her father got a new job far away. We cried and begged, but he took her anyway. She left, and I never heard from her again.Until now.I walked towards her with slow and steady steps and stopped next to her, then I turned around and looked at the painting s

LILLIAN POVI was adjusting an IV line when a soft knock sounded at the ward door, and I looked up to see Dr. Wanni peeking in, with a bright smile on her face.“Dr. Lillian! Am I interrupting?”“Not at all,” I said and returned her smile. “Come in, please.”She stepped inside, with her white coat swishing behind her. “I just wanted to thank you in person for accepting my invitation. I know it is short notice, and we have only just met, so it really means a lot.”I waved off her thanks and smiled brightly. “Please it is my honor. You helped me out of a tight spot. That makes you my friend, and I am really happy for you and your promotion.”She leaned against an empty bed, with a warm expression on her face. “You are too kind. I am just glad to have some friendly faces celebrating with me.”“How long have you been working here, anyway?” I asked curiously, “to get promoted to Head of Resident Physicians so quickly is impressive.”“Oh, not too long, actually,” she said with shrug on her

DRAKE POVAndre snatched the bottle of whiskey from my hand and slammed it down hard on the desk. “Think, Drake! Is that really the kinf of Luna you want for this pack? A two faced manipulator who cries, on your shoulder one minute and tears your people down the next?”My stomach rolled at the question. I slumped back in my chair as the weight of the night—of all the weeks—pressed down on me. Then I rubbed my hands over my face, as I tried to scrub away the image of Elara’s tear streaked face and the haunting echo of her words. ‘I would switch places with her in a heartbeat.’ “I don’t know anything anymore,” I groaned bitterly. To my shock, Andre softened his voice and moved around the desk to place a firm hand on my shoulder. “I am truly sorry, brother.”I looked up in confusion. “Sorry for what?”“For this,” he said, and dropped his voice into an earnest whisper meant only for me. “Because my mate is Lillian. I know it is because I am with her, and you are….away from her, that you a

ANDRE POVThe words hung heavily in the air like a bad smell. “What if I should give it a try? Just…see if there could be something there?” I felt a cold knot of dread form deep in my gut . This was worse than I thought. He was not just pitying her, he was actually considering it. And then I turned to look at Lucas and saw the same horrified understanding in his eyes. The road to Elara is the road to destruction, and Drake was looking at a map.I could not let this stand. I walked over to Drake’s desk and planted my hands on it, and leaned in so he could not avoid my gaze.“Drake, listen to me. Whatever thought you are having about you and Elara, you need to kill it. Right now. Cease it. In fact,” I said stiffly, “I will tell the garrison to get ready for a movement at first light. We will escort Elara back to her father tomorrow. It all ends here.”Drake snorted with a hollow look in his eyes. “Right. Of course. Because you have all the answers.”“I have the answer to this,” I shot

  • THE ALPHA’S PUBLIC REJECTION    CHAPTER 161

LILLIAN POVI stood on the driveway, watching the taillights of Lucas’s car disappear onto the night, but my mind, however, was still back on the balcony, trapped in the heat of Andre’s kiss, and the rough whisper of his voice against my ear. ‘Can I go back to being the real Andre?’A violent shiver that had nothing to do with the cool night air ran through me.Then I turned to go back inside, only to find Salome and Lydia standing in the door way, with their arms crossed on their chests, and also with identical smirks plastered on their faces. My face instantly turned red. Goddess, no. And then I prayed the semi-darkness of the porch would hide my burning cheeks. “What?” I asked as I tried desperately to sound casual and failed miserably.Lydia gasped dramatically and pointed a finger at me. “I told you so! Look at her! She is glowing like a neon’s sign!”Salome stepped forward, and narrowed her eyes as she studied me like a specimen. I was so embarrassed that I took a step back.“Wh

  • THE ALPHA’S PUBLIC REJECTION    CHAPTER 160

DRAKE POVI had just settled Elara against her pillows and was turning to leave when she stretched out her hand and gripped my wrist tightly.“Do not go,” she whispered, with her voice thick with feigned sleepiness. “The bed is so big and cold. Please, just….join me? Just until I fall asleep?”But I carefully and firmly pried my hand from hers. “No, Elara. The best I can do is watch you sleep from the chair. That is it. That is my line.”Then I took a step toward the armchair by the fireplace, but the sound that came from her bed stopped me on my tracks. I was not a sniff. It was a raw, heart wrenching sob that seemed to tear itself out from her chest, and was immediately followed by another, then another.“Why am I so unlucky!” She wailed as the tears came out in a violent flood. “The Moon Goddess gave me a mate who can not wait to ship me back to my father like a damaged product. I wish….I wish I could just disappear! I hate this life! I hate it!”I was stunned, for this was not her
