KAIA POV

The moon temple smells like pine and burning sage.

And fear. Mostly fear.

I stand in the center of the stone circle, my leather armor catching the firelight, and my hands won’t stop shaking.

Not from cold.

From what I’m about to do.

“You look beautiful.”

Lyra squeezes my hand from beside me. My best friend since we were fourteen and stole cigarettes from the elder’s shed. She’s the only one who knows this isn’t a proposal I’m waiting for. It’s an execution.

“I’m about to humiliate the Alpha’s best friend in front of three hundred people,” I whisper. My voice cracks. “Beautiful isn’t the word.”

“Honest is,” she says. But her fingers are cold in mine. “And Rafe deserves honest.”

Does he?

Or does he just deserve to not be laughed at by the whole pack?

The drums start. Low. Tribal. Like a heartbeat.

Every wolf in the Blackmoon Pack is here. Three hundred pairs of eyes. The council on their stone thrones. The warriors I’ve bled with. The girls I trained.

And Damien.

The next Alpha.

My fated mate.

The man who’s never said my name unless it was followed by “ten more laps” or “you’re sloppy.”

He’s watching me.

Of course he is.

His jaw is locked, and there’s that little tick in his cheek he gets when he’s pissed. When he sees me, the muscle jumps.

I look away first. I always do.

But not before I catch it. That tiny pull at the corner of his mouth.

Not a smile.

It’s worse. It’s mine.

“Don’t,” Lyra whispers.

“Don’t what?”

“Look at him like you want him to save you. He won’t. Definitely Not tonight.”

She’s right.

Tonight isn’t about Damien’s ice and shadows.

It’s about Rafe.

The drums get louder.

And then he walks out.

Rafe Corbin.

He looks like sin in a tailored black suit. Amber eyes too bright. Smile too sharp. He’s glowing because he thinks this is it. His moment. His claim.

He drops to one knee in front of me, and the whole temple holds its breath.

I hear it then. A crack.

Damien’s hand on his throne.

Stone splintering under his fingers.

No one else notices. But I do. My chest aches.

“Kaia Velen,” Rafe says, and his voice is honey over broken glass. “You’re the strongest female this pack has ever seen. I watched you break Viktor’s arm and not even flinch.”

Laughter. Whispers.

My face burns.

“I’ve loved you since you got that scar and wore it like you were proud of it. I want to make you my mate. My Luna. My everything.”

He pulls out the moonstone ring. It’s beautiful.

It’s wrong.

“Will you bond with me?”

The silence is so loud it hurts.

“No.”

The word falls out of me. Small. Final.

I see it hit him. His whole body jerks back like I slapped him.

“No?” He laughs, but it’s wrong. Hollow. “What do you mean no?”

“I mean no, Rafe.” My hands are shaking so bad I lace my fingers together. “I respect you. But I’m not yours. I won’t lie to you.”

The whispers explode.

Did she just—

The Alpha’s best friend—

What is she thinking—

Lyra grips my hand tighter.

Rafe stands. Slow.

And then his bones start to crack. He shifts right there, halfway. Wolf eyes. Claws. In front of everyone.

“You’re rejecting me,” he says. Soft. Dangerous. “In front of everyone.”

“I’m sorry,” I say. And I am. God, I am. “But yes.”

He stares at me for a long time. Long enough for my stomach to drop out.

Long enough for Damien to shift forward on his throne.

Then Rafe laughs. Wild. Ugly.

“You’ll regret this, Kaia.”

It didn’t sound like a threat. It was the fact.

He turns and walks out. And the pack erupts.

I feel sick.

My legs feel like water.

Lyra’s arm comes around me. “Breathe,” she murmurs. “You did the right thing.”

Did I?

Or did I just sign both our death warrants?

The ceremony falls apart. The Alpha dismisses everyone without looking at me once. Like I’m already gone.

I’m stepping off the platform when he’s there.

Damien.

So close I can smell him. Pine. Snow. Copper. Anger.

“That was stupid,” he says. Low, just for me.

“That was honest,” I shoot back. My voice shakes.

“Same thing sometimes.” He steps in. I don’t move. I’m too proud. Too stupid.

“You just rejected the Alpha’s best friend. You think he’s going to let that go?”

“Why do you care?” The words come out broken. “You’ve never cared what I do.”

His eyes drop. To my mouth. Just for a second.

And my whole body lights up like I’ve been struck.

“Don’t,” he says. A warning. A plea.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t make me care.”

In my head “ What is that supposed to mean “

He walks past me. And I stand there, shaking, because I swear I saw his hands shaking too.

Lyra links her arm through mine. “Come on.”

“What if I messed up?” I whisper.

“You didn’t,” she says. But she definitely doesn’t sound sure.

We walk toward the exit, and I don’t see him.

Don’t see Rafe in the shadows burning in anger, phone in hand.

Don’t see him type:

[Make her pay]

The reply is instant.

[On it. —S]

Tonight I rejected a man.

Tomorrow, I’ll lose everything.

But tonight, all I can feel is Damien’s gaze burning between my shoulder blades...

and the way Lyra’s hand feels too cold in mine, like something terrible is on its way.

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    THE SANCTUARY

KAIA VELEN POVThe cabin didn't look like salvation, but it smelled like it.Damien had pushed me through the forest for two days straight after we crossed the northern border, never explaining where we were going, just keeping my hand locked in his and moving forward like the hounds of hell were at our heels. Which they were. The Blackmoon Pack was behind us somewhere, arrows and curses and the weight of everything we'd destroyed. Then the trees opened up, and there it was. A cabin made of dark wood and stone, tucked into a valley where the mountains created a natural barrier. Smoke rose from the chimney like someone had been expecting us."Don't move," Damien said, and his voice shifted into something formal. Alpha language. "Let me do the talking."A woman emerged from the shadows—tall, scarred, with grey running through her dark hair like silver streaks. Behind her were three wolves in half-form, weapons drawn but not raised. A threat that could become a defense if we gave them re

Kaia povWe run until dawn.My legs are screaming. My lungs are fire. My hands are still tinged silver from the Moonfire I unleashed, and I can’t stop shaking from the adrenaline and the power and the absolute certainty that we’re going to die in these woods. But Damien doesn’t stop, so neither do I.The guards lost us around mile three—we heard their voices fade into the distance, heard them arguing about which direction we went. By then, we were already moving north, deeper into the uncharted territories that border the pack lands.“There,” Damien says finally, pointing to a ravine maybe a hundred yards ahead. “We hide there. Wait until dark. Move again when they can’t track us as easily.”We slide down the rocky slope, and my hands get shredded on sharp stones. I don’t care. Pain is just another thing happening to my body that I’m too numb to process. The ravine is deep enough that we can’t be seen from above, and there’s a cave entrance on the far wall. Damien checks it—makes sure

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    RAFE’S OFFER

The holding cell smells like rust and despair. I’ve been here for six hours. No trial. No formal charges read. Just a stone room with a single barred window and a cot that smells like the last person who was imprisoned here. I don’t want to think about who that was or what happened to them. The guard brings food I can’t eat and water I drink too quickly because it gives me something to do besides sit with my thoughts. That’s when Rafe arrives. He dismisses the guard with a single look—there’s power in that now, I realize. Power I gave him by refusing to stay silent about what he is—and closes the cell door behind him like we’re old friends meeting for tea. “You look terrible,” he says, settling onto the cot like he owns it. “Get out.” “Can’t. Your new boyfriend’s father is too busy dealing with the heir situation to pay attention to visitors.” He leans back and smiles. “Besides, I think you’ll want to hear what I have to say.” I don’t respond. I just stand by the windo

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    INTERROGATION

The council chamber feels different when they're trying to destroy you. It's colder. Darker. The torches seem to flicker with malice instead of light. I stand in the center of the circle—the accused's circle, which is lower than all the thrones, designed to make you feel small—and try not to shake. It's midday. The vote isn't until tomorrow night. But Rafe just couldn't wait. "Kaia Velen," the Alpha begins, his voice formal and distant. Damien's father. The man who's always treated me like a warrior. Now he treats me like a criminal. "You've been summoned to answer questions regarding your use of prohibited magic during yesterday's training exercise." "I didn't use any magic," I say, and I keep my voice steady. Calm. Like I actually believe this lie. Councilor Chen leans forward. "Multiple witnesses saw silver light emanating from your body." "They saw a reflection. Sweat catches the sun sometimes. It looks—" "Sweat doesn't glow," Rafe says from his position near the

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    The Flash

KAIA POV The training grounds are packed. That's Rafe's play, I realize. He's made sure everyone is watching. Warriors. Sentries. Council members standing on the sidelines with their arms crossed and suspicion in their eyes. He's set the stage for my execution. Damien doesn't look at me when I arrive. He just nods at the assembled pack and calls me out to the center of the arena. "Today we're testing endurance," he announces. "Kaia versus Viktor and Marcus. Back to back. No breaks until someone surrenders." It's brutal. It's designed to be brutal. And it's totally a perfect cover for whatever Rafe is planning. Viktor attacks first—he's all brute force, and I slip past his guard easily. Marcus is faster, more technical. I'd normally take them both down in under five minutes, but today I'm fighting tired. Still exhausted from the forest training. Still vibrating with terror about what Rafe knows. That's when my control starts to slip. A punch comes at my face. I parry.

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    FIRST BLOOD

KAIA POV The forest before dawn smells like death and possibility. I'm already there when Damien arrives—I didn't sleep, just lay in my bunk and counted the hours until I could leave the compound without questions. The north gate is abandoned at this hour. The sentries are on the other side of the perimeter, and the woods are dark enough that I can pretend I'm alone. Then he steps out of the trees, and I'm not alone anymore. He's shirtless. Just leather pants and boots, and his body is a landscape of scars and muscle that I've seen a hundred times in training but never like this. Never when we're not surrounded by warriors. Never when it's just us. "You came," he says. "You gave me an order." "No, I didn't." He moves closer, and the morning air shifts around him. "I gave you a choice. You chose to come." I don't answer because he's right, and I hate that he's right. "We're going to work on your technique," he continues, circling me like I'm prey. "Not the warrior tec
