The morning sun filtered through the windows of the pack house, casting a warm glow over the grand hall. Damon sat at the head of the table, reviewing reports from the border patrol. The attack the night before had shaken him, but he was pleased with how Elara had handled herself.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. "Enter," he called.

Victoria Sterling stepped into the room, her presence filling the space with an air of elegance and danger. She was dressed in a form-fitting black dress that accentuated her curves, her dark hair cascading down her back in loose waves.

"Alpha King," she purred, her voice like silk. "I hope I am not disturbing you."

Damon's jaw tightened. He did not trust Victoria, but he could not deny her beauty or her power. "What do you want, Victoria?"

Victoria smiled, a slow, seductive smile that made Damon's skin crawl. "I have come with a proposition," she said, taking a seat across from him. "An alliance between our species."

Damon raised an eyebrow. "An alliance? After the attack last night?"

Victoria's smile faltered for a moment, but she quickly recovered. "That was not authorized by the vampire council," she said. "Viktor Bloodworth is acting on his own, seeking to destabilize the peace between our species."

Damon leaned back in his chair, studying her. "And what does this alliance entail?"

"A marriage," Victoria said, her eyes locking with his. "Between you and me. A union that would unite our species and put an end to Viktor's madness."

Damon's eyes widened. He had not expected this. "You want to marry me?"

"It is the only way to ensure peace," Victoria said. "Our union would create a powerful bond between werewolves and vampires, making it impossible for Viktor to continue his campaign of destruction."

Damon was silent for a moment, considering her proposal. On the surface, it made sense. A marriage between the Alpha King and a powerful vampire would indeed strengthen the alliance between their species. But Damon could not shake the feeling that Victoria had ulterior motives.

"I need time to consider," he said finally.

Victoria nodded, her smile returning. "Take all the time you need, Alpha King. But do not wait too long. Viktor is growing more powerful by the day."

With that, she stood and left the room, leaving Damon alone with his thoughts.

Later that day, Elara was patrolling the borders when she overheard two pack members talking. "Did you hear? The vampire princess has offered to marry the Alpha King," one of them said.

"Really? That would be a powerful alliance," the other replied. "But what about Elara? I thought she was his mate."

Elara's heart sank. She had not heard about Victoria's proposal, and the news hit her like a punch to the gut. She knew Damon had rejected her, but the thought of him marrying another woman—especially a vampire—was more painful than she had anticipated.

She continued her patrol, but her mind was elsewhere. She could not stop thinking about Damon and Victoria, about the possibility of them getting married. It felt like a betrayal, even though Damon had already rejected her.

That evening, Elara returned to the pack house and found Marcus in the training room. "Have you heard about Victoria's proposal?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Marcus's expression softened. "I have," he said. "And I know how you feel. But you should not worry. Damon is not the type to make such a decision lightly."

"But what if he accepts?" Elara asked. "What if he marries her?"

Marcus put a hand on her shoulder. "Damon may have rejected you, but I know he still has feelings for you. He has been watching you closely since the attack last night."

Elara looked up at him, hope flickering in her eyes. "Do you really think so?"

Marcus nodded. "I have known Damon since we were boys. I can see the way he looks at you. He is conflicted, but his heart is still with you."

Elara felt a small glimmer of hope. Maybe there was still a chance for her and Damon. Maybe his rejection had not been final.

That night, Damon sought out Elara. He found her sitting on a bench in the garden, staring up at the moon.

"May I sit?" he asked.

Elara nodded, her heart racing. "Of course."

Damon sat down beside her, his gaze fixed on the moon. "I heard you were upset about Victoria's proposal," he said.

Elara's heart skipped a beat. So he had heard. "I... I was surprised," she said.

Damon turned to look at her, his silver-gray eyes intense. "I have not made a decision yet. And I want you to know that whatever I decide, it will not be because I do not care about you."

Elara felt her breath catch. "What do you mean?"

Damon looked away, his jaw tightening. "I have responsibilities, Elara. To the pack, to the supernatural world. Sometimes duty requires us to make difficult choices."

Elara nodded, understanding. "I know. But I also know that you are not happy with Victoria. She is not your mate."

Damon's eyes met hers, and for a moment, she saw the vulnerability beneath his tough exterior. "You are right," he said. "She is not my mate. But sometimes love is not enough."

Elara reached out and touched his hand, her fingers brushing against his. "It should be," she said.

Damon looked at her hand on his, and for a moment, Elara thought he would pull away. But he did not. Instead, he laced his fingers through hers, his touch warm and familiar.

"I wish things were different," he said quietly.

Elara smiled, her heart full. "Maybe they can be," she said.

Damon did not reply, but he did not let go of her hand. They sat together in the garden, watching the moon rise, their fingers intertwined.

And for a moment, Elara allowed herself to hope that maybe, just maybe, Damon would choose her after all.
