Keith

“I would like to see her,” Olga insisted, “I have been looking for a new slave myself to help with keeping up the spirits in my parties.”

I maintained the smile on my face, trying not to upset her, “then we shall send a call for slaves in the pack,” I said easily, guiding my wife away from Maisie’s door, “someone fitting for my Luna.”

Olga laughed. It was a soft delicate laugh.

“You are very nice, Keith,” she spoke warmly, her voice so soft that one could mistake her for a saint.

“I would do anything for you, dear,” I said, “you know that, right?”

She stopped walking suddenly and spun to face me directly, “I’ve always wondered if you could ever get over your first love.”

Her voice sounded so sad that someone could mistake her tone for pitiful. But I was not fooled. I knew more than anyone that Olga, while she carried herself with the grace of a Luna, did not in fact have much in the way of empathy. But it did not matter, our marriage was one done out of convenience and not personal feelings. The security her marriage afforded me had expanded my pack almost twice its previous size.

So I smiled and looked into her eyes like only she mattered in the world, “None of that matters anymore, does it?”

She let out a soft breath and heaved her shoulders, “but I do worry.”

I raised an eyebrow, “Whatever for, dear?”

“I have nightmares when she returns to the palace determined to seek revenge against me.”

“Nonsense, my love! Nonsense!”

“Are you saying that you will kill her if she somehow sets foot in here again?”

My blood ran cold.

She wanted me to kill Maisie? Surely she knew that was an absurd request.

“Why would I kill her?” I asked coolly.

Olga frowned to show her displeasure with my answer.

“I am worried for my safety, Keith,” she said, with a look of concern on her face.

“You must not worry about such things,” I said, kissing her on her forehead, “even if Maisie does return she is no match for you. She never was.”

Every bit of that sentence was true. It was true because Maisie had always been superior to everyone else. She was stronger and far more beautiful. She was resilient and unfortunately would always remain the woman who had my heart forever.

“Then promise me,” Olga swept my hand in hers, “that you will never let her return here.”

“It is the only way that I will not worry.”

“You are my wife and in a few weeks you shall be my Luna,” I was very careful in choosing my words, “even if Maisie suddenly appeared it would not change that.”

“Do you still love her then?” she asked me.

I looked at her and wondered why such a beautiful woman would be so insecure.

“It is very late, my dear,” I said to her, “we must go to bed now.”

I placed her arm in mine and walked away with her on my arm.

“You are avoiding the question, Keith,” she was not happy, “why would you…”

“Then I must ask you the same,” I replied to her, “do you love me?”

She stepped in front of me, effectively preventing me from moving forward, “I do.”

“Our marriage is…”

“...for convenience. I know that. But it does not mean that we cannot love each other.”

“Olga…”

“Come to me tonight,” she said to me softly, “and I will make you forget about her.”

But how could Olga prove successful in doing that when Maisie was within my reach?

“I want to make love to you, Keith.”

She pulled me in her arms, leaning forward to kiss me, but my instincts held me back. Somehow my body knew that she was not the woman in whose arms I wanted to retire tonight.

“What’s wrong?” she asked softly as her lips hovered over mine, seeking an entrance.

“It is very late,” I said, “and I am very tired.”

She sighed.

“We must consummate our marriage at some point,” she said, “it is our duty after all to provide the pack with suitable heirs.”

“I know that,” came my tired response, “I am just tired tonight.”

“And I still have some pack business that I must tend to,” I added.

But the truth was that I had always dreaded this part of our arranged marriage. I did not know how to make love to a woman that I did not love. My body had belonged to Maisie for the longest time, and in the five years that she had left me my body had resigned to not having anyone to lie with.

Olga stroked my brow, “You are always so busy. Why don’t you take the day off, huh? You are the Alpha after all, you should be able to do that much.”

She was right about that.

I was the Alpha and giving myself a vacation should not be so difficult, but I would do anything to put off our consummation.

“No,” I refused, and seeing that my rejection had hurt her, I quickly added, “our first time must be special.”

“I do not need such things,” she said.

“I do not want us to make love just because duty demands it,” I said, “I must plan this well for you, my love.”

Under the dim light of the moon, I could see her blush.

I had masterfully avoided a major conflict with Olga.

“But we must do it soon,” she said to me, “or the court will begin to whisper about your impotence or my barrenness. We cannot have either.”

“We can simply behead wagging tongues,” I replied to her in jest.

She chuckled.

“You are right of course!”

As we approached the main house, Olga suddenly stopped.

“My scarf!” she raised her voice with slight panic.

“What? What scarf?” I asked.

She sighed, “It must have fallen off in front of the outhouse. I must go to recover it.”

And very quickly, she began walking towards Maisie.

Maisie“Mommy?” I looked at my son's pale face after Keith had left us. Lance looked like the life force was about to be drained from his life. I pitied my son greatly. He was very sick and he needed more medicine if he was going to overcome his illness. I clasped his palm in mine and brought it to my lips. “My darling,” I called him warmly. “Who is that man, Mom?” he asked me, his eyes wide with curiosity, “he is very mean.” I swallowed, not certain what answer to give the little boy. It also baffled me that father and son could not recognise each other even though they looked so alike. One only had to look at their faces to know they were related. “Is there a reason he hates me?” Lance asked curiously. What would I tell him? Was the man who wanted his life if I failed to comply with his father? So I smiled and leaned in to kiss his forehead, “Why don't you try and get some sleep, huh? I will find some medicine in the morning to make you better.” He nodded his small head and

Maisie “Husband!” When I looked up I saw her—the woman Keith had married. She was tall and thin, so thin that I thought she would break if she tried to walk, but she had surprising grace as she made her way towards Keith. As she drew closer, I noted that she was stunning. Her eyes were the colour of amber and her hair was gold, the colour of the sun. I watched as she wrapped her arms around Keith and said aloud for all present to hear.“I have missed you deeply,” her voice also dripped with honey, “I prepared a special present for you in the bedroom.” Keith pulled out from the hug and kissed her passionately, their kissing sounds echoing around the room. My heart bled. My hands flew to my chest suddenly. I had not realised just how painful it would be watching Keith with someone else. I felt my heart twist painfully as they continued to kiss. Every sound they made was like torture to my soul. I felt like I was suffocating, the longer the kiss went on. “Stop!” I screamed, unabl

Keith“You must return to the pack house, Keith,” Cassian said, looking around at the small space I had been holed up in for the past couple of days. His eyes carried his displeasure with my new living arrangement. “Maisie has to get better,” I said, “I can’t leave her here all alone.” Then I looked up at him, “How are things at the pack house?” Cassian sighed, “Olga wants to behead another servant.” “Why?” “She’s claiming the girl stole her diamond necklace.” “You said you would talk to her,” Cassian reminded me. I ran my hand through my hair, frustrated. We had sex. And I knew she had drugged me slightly to get me in the mood, but it was still great sex. And now my mind was conflicted. I did not think that I could face Olga for now. “You are the Beta,” I said, “it is your duty to ensure that the Alpha and his family stay in line. So do your job. Talk to her yourself.” “You’re trying to pawn off your duty on me,” he said, not falling for my tirade. I said nothing in my defe

Maisie Thanks to Cassian, Lance’s health improved. But I knew that two small bottles would not be enough to nurse him completely to health. I would need more, and unfortunately, there was no way to get that here. It was already the early hours of the morning, and now that I was back here, I was reminded of the pack house's routine. As Alpha, Keith would be in the councilroom discussing important issues within the pack. But who knew? He had a wife so he may be enjoying a good morning roll with her. That made my heart sink. I hated that I still cared about such things. Yet, I could not help that Keith affected me. He affected me in a way that I could not even begin to reason. I tried pushing him out of my mind and began my morning with a long bath after which I bathed my son. Then I found the kitchen and it amazed me that Keith had made this cottage into a rather nice sort of prison. There was enough in the small pantry to make meals for a week. I chuckled bitterly because this wa

KeithI looked at my image in the full-length mirror in front of me. I was clad in a black leather suit that added to my powerful aura. A huge gold ring bearing the insignia of the pack sat on my finger. I inhaled as I recalled Cassian’s conversation from the night before. I would have to caution Olga about the beheadings. She had ordered the deaths of two of her servants already. I did not wish for that to become a pattern under my reign. But first I would have to attend the council meeting this morning. The very thought of sitting through one gave me a headache. Still, I braced myself for what was to come. I left my room, walking through the expansive hallways with the strength of an Alpha. But I noticed something rather peculiar as I approached the councilroom. There were no servants or guards in sight. It was eerily quiet and that unsettled me. As an Alpha, that could signal a betrayal, an ambush, an imminent coup. I stopped walking and looked around me with narrowed eyes but

Maisie Keith's words stung me. He had brought me here to live the rest of my life in misery. That was his plan. To punish me for leaving him. But still, he had not asked me why I left. I doubted if I told him the reason that he would listen. I heard footsteps walk away from the door and I let out a breath I did not know I was holding in. If it was my misery Keith wanted by bringing me here, he was getting his wish already. I walked away from the door, but a knock on the door stopped me in my tracks. I turned sharply and walked softly to the door, pressing my ear against it. The knock came again and this time it sounded more urgent than before. “Who is there?” I asked softly. Then I heard Keith's voice from behind the door, “Maisie?” I did not get why he was knocking. He has locked me in here. I was his prisoner and there was no way for me to leave. “What?” my tone dripped with sarcasm, “worried I found a way to escape your prison?” “For your own sake,” he growled, clearly no
