“Look at the time you’re coming in!” my boss, Silver Cross, shouted at me so loudly that his spit landed on my face. The action irked me, but I had to remind myself that I was in the human world and this human was my boss. Even though I had enough strength as a werewolf to rip him to shreds, I exercised restraint. It was the only way I could survive in this world. Instead, I cleared my throat and apologised in a small voice, “I’m sorry, sir. My son was sick…” “Enough!” he screamed, “I am sick of your excuses. If you are late one more day, do not bother coming in at all.” I nodded pitifully, scurrying away to change into my work uniform to begin my day’s job. As I reached into my small locker in the broom closet, the tips of my fingers touched a smooth surface. I pulled it out and saw a picture of my son that I had framed a year ago. The picture brought a warm smile to my lips and made my heart sink at the same time. My son. He was the reason I was here. He was the reason I kept enduring insult after insult from my middle-aged, bear-bellied human boss in an upscale restaurant. I had to make ends meet to take care of him, and, more importantly, keep a low profile even here. I pulled my shirt over my head and exchanged my leggings for a short skirt that barely covered my derriere. “Hurry up!” I was interrupted by my coworker, Emily. I smiled and joined her outside as we made our way into the dining space where we served guests. But I stopped suddenly when I stepped foot inside. “What?” Emily prodded me, “You’re really asking for trouble today.” But Emily was a mere human so she could not smell what I did. The scent of wolves—powerful wolves that were far above my station. I took another step forward, trying not to allow the feeling of anxiety to spread through my chest. “May?” I heard Emily whisper beside me, “Is something wrong?” “No…” I shook my head, refusing to believe a particular scent that wafted across my nose, “It cannot be.” “What are you talking about?” she demanded from me. I smiled and shook my head, “nothing.” “You had better not fuck things up today for me,” she said, “we’re serving some VIP guests that tip really well.” Then she lowered her voice,” and I heard they tip extra well if you follow them to their room.” “Emily!” “What?” she shrugged her shoulders, “what’s so bad about making some extra money?” She sauntered away, leaving me by myself. I took a bold step forward and walked to the table closest to me. I flashed my smile which I had spent months perfecting, “Would you like to place an order now?” My eyes glanced around the table I had come to serve. They were all men and from the scent I picked up, the table was full of werewolves, and judging by the strong aura I could sense, I would assume they were all alphas. My heart began to pound fiercely. To think that I had spent years running from my kind only to run into them where I was convinced I would never find them. I had so many questions running through my mind. Who were they? What were they doing here? Had he sent them? Did he know? “You’re very pretty for a human,” one of the men laughed, baring his teeth at me as if trying to scare me. I smiled and tried to feign a naive look as I had absolutely no idea what he was implying. I had taken my potion this morning as I did every day since I had been on the run with my son. “You flatter me, sir,” I said with a tight-lipped smile. “I cannot see your teeth,” another said, “are you not trained to smile properly?” I was doing my best to exercise restraint even though my wolf snarled within me, threatening to burst out of my human form and shred the leering Alphas. ‘Don’t cause any trouble,’ I said in my head. I could not afford to get caught here. To the Alphas, I continued to smile, hoping that they could not hear my heart pounding within me. “I will return when you are ready to place an order,” I said with a smile, turning my back because they had shown no interest in ordering food. I planned to ditch the table and tell Emily that the men seemed like the kind who might want some extra company. I felt instantly guilty for thinking about throwing Emily to these monsters, but I had to save myself and save my son. “Wait!” The voice stopped me from moving any further. My heart stopped as did time because I recognised who that was. It belonged to Nigel Crawfords of the Lampshade pack. He was an Alpha known notoriously for marrying women who ended up dying mysteriously within six months of marriage. He was rumoured to be brutal with women and would infamously kill his maidservants for the slightest errors. I had avoided him when I lived as a werewolf, but he was here now in the human realm. What the hell was he doing here? What the hell were all these Alphas doing gathered here? Did they have business in the human world? Did they plan on bringing terror to this world? Did I end up running from them to end up trapped in their world again? “Did you not hear me?” Nigel asked. I turned to face him, but he beckoned for me to come closer. “I’m ready to place my order,” he said to me. “What would that be sir?” It was a struggle keeping the smile on my face and trying not to make my teeth chatter with fright. “You,” I was standing beside him, waiting for him to choose something from the rich menu. “Sir?” I expected this sort of behaviour from Nigel, but had he no shame really? Nigel dropped the menu in his hand and trained his gaze on me, “I said I want you.” I was still racking my brain for a response when I heard a loud smack and felt Nigel’s rough hands on my buttocks. The nerve of the scoundrel! I was so startled by the action that I jumped back, trying to get away from Nigel. Here in the human world, there were laws against such types of harassment. But as I pulled back, the linen of the tablecloth caught underneath my feet and the vase placed in the middle of the table, fell down with a loud shattering noise, startling me even further. I felt the instant stares of everyone in the room on me. And the overwhelming aura in the room proved me right—the room was packed with Alphas and they were all staring at me. “LEAVE!” The cold voice behind me was a thousand times more chilling to my soul than being dunked in ice. It was him. The familiar scent I had made out earlier—it had been him. I turned around slowly to confirm my suspicion and a pair of steel grey eyes burned into my soul. Keith. The man I had run away from. “I SAID LEAVE.” I heard footsteps begin to shuffle the marble tile and the restaurant began to empty at his command. I turned sharply too, hoping that he had not recognised me. I was betting on the potion that hid my scent to make me unrecognisable to him but he grabbed my hand roughly and I knew that my running was over. His second hand lunged for my throat in a chokehold that threatened to take my life. He was staring directly into my eyes, his hot breath on my face, and with a smirk he said, “So you’re still alive.”Maisie I had never seen Alpha Theodore before but when he walked into the library I froze from the aura he exuded as Alpha of the pack. No one had to tell me that he was Keith's father. I knew instantly. “Father,” Keith addressed the Alpha with no particular warmth, “it is rude to barge into my personal space without knocking.” Alpha Theodore was not looking at his son. He was looking at me intensely. I felt like I was prey and he wanted to gobble me up. “I learned someone entered the pack house without…” “This is Maisie,” Keith cut him off, “and she's with me. Maisie, my father, Theodore.” Goosebumps rose on my arms as Keith introduced me to the Alpha. Hanging out with Keith was one thing but meeting the Alpha so casually was quite another. I was so stunned that I could not string a sentence together. “Has she no tongue?” the Alpha asked. His eyes had not left mine since he stepped into the library. “Father…” Keith sounded angry. “Your Majesty,” I courtesied awkwardly, not q
Keith Conversation flowed between us naturally. We talked like we had known each other for ages. “Don’t get me wrong,” I said to her, “I love a good poem. I think that they are unnecessarily complicated.” Maisie looked at me like she could absolutely not relate to what I was saying. “You really mean this?” she laughed softly. “Yes. It’s true.” “What you call complicated is the artistry of poetry,” she shared, her eyes alive with ideas as she spoke, “what would be complicated is science. I do feel like sometimes scholars deliberately make it sound hard with weird terms, but it’s really all simple.” “You must be so smart,” I did admire her mind, “Is that why you got the scholarship?” A frown crossed her brows and I felt bad instantly for bringing up the topic. “You don’t have to answer…” “It’s okay,” she replied quickly, “yes. I had the highest scores in the entrance examinations. I guess I only scored low on the physical test.” “The physical test?” “I don’t know a thing abo
Maisie We never spoke about it. It was something we both endured quietly and then carried on with our lives the next day like nothing ever happened. But when my mother walked into my room the next morning while I rummaged through my wardrobe for what to wear, I noticed her swollen cheek and it broke my heart. It was one reason I was willing to endure humiliation at the Academy. I knew there was a better life for us after that. I could get a respectable job and save us both from our monster. And yet my mother had a bright smile on her face when she walked into my room. She looked simply radiant. It was just who she was. I wondered sometimes how she had ended up with a monster like my father. “Wow!” she remarked, looking at my clothes strewn across the floor and everywhere else. “I just don't have what to wear,” I whined. It was true too. I had nothing to wear for a party. My clothes to school already made me look so inferior. I could not imagine showing up at the pack house in cl
Maisie I felt the tips of my fingers tremble when I saw Betsy on my living room couch, that sadistic smirk on her lips and that evil glint in her eyes. Her smile widened when our eyes met. “Your friend is here again,” My mother looked cheerful. If only she knew!“I wonder why you two don't just come in together,” my mother said, looking between both of us. “I wasn't planning on coming here today,” Betsy said, her eyes directly on me, “but I changed my mind at the last minute.” I bunched my fingers in a fist beside me. “What do you want?” I asked her. She really was not planning on abusing me in front of my mother, was she? She was a wicked person so I would not be surprised if she was capable of doing that. “There's a party on Saturday,” she said, “I just found out and I wanted you to know about it.” Her eyes glistened with happiness I knew stemmed from absolute cruelty, “All the cool kids would be coming. It'll be fun. Tell me you'll come.” Her act as my friend was complete
MaisieMy father had a way of making me lose my mind. His very presence annoyed me, and it had all started when I was still a small child. He would always find every reason to hit me, calling it discipline. He was very harsh on me growing up. It was almost like he hated me. And when I asked my mother if perhaps I was not really his son, she had told me he would have killed me if he thought that I was not his son. He had stopped hitting me eventually because I had started training to fight and would fight him back and mostly win. Now we had long arguments and shouting matches and threatened each other openly. It was a hate-hate relationship that I had with my father. Nothing more. There was no love. At least, I had never sensed that he held such a feeling for me. He only saw me as his replacement but always pointed out how I was lacking the qualities to take over from him successfully. I was determined to prove him wrong. I dropped my bag and walked out of my room and the pack house.
KeithMaisie was an interesting person. She made me happy, it was just too easy to talk to her and with her. She knew a lot of things too. It was a breath of fresh air from girls within the royal circle who made themselves dumb to appear appealing to me. That has always irritated me. But not Maisie—she knew so many things and the things she did not know, she was ready to listen attentively, she loved knowledge. ‘Don’t fall in love, Keith,’ my wolf said to me all of a sudden. I tried to push Alden out of my mind but he came back to whisper to me, ‘Don’t…’ ‘She’s perfect,’ I told him, ‘the goddess has to make her my mate.’ ‘So you'll reject your mate for her?’ I smiled to myself. ‘She’s the only one for me, Alden. I know she's my mate.’ If I could see Alden, I knew he would be rolling his eyes at me. But I did not care what he thought. The only thing that mattered right now was how I felt about Maisie. And I knew it was cringe, but I did feel butterflies in my stomach when I look
Keith“I would like to see her,” Olga insisted, “I have been looking for a new slave myself to help with keeping up the spirits in my parties.” I maintained the smile on my face, trying not to upset her, “then we shall send a call for slaves in the pack,” I said easily, guiding my wife away from M
Maisie“Stand guard outside,” Keith ordered Cassian, “I'll be back once night falls.” Keith was speaking in low tones, but my ears were listening intently to every sound. I was already thinking of how I would escape. I had done it nine years ago and I would certainly do it again. I was not scared
Maisie I threw my body in front of Lance as Beta Cassian’s sword bore down on him. The sword cut through my clothes and sliced the skin of my stomach. I winced in pain as I covered my son with my body, shielding him from Keith's terrifying gaze. “What?” Keith sneered, “You'll die protecting your
Keith The fear in her eyes should have satisfied me. I was meant to take satisfaction in the fact that I was finally getting my revenge. I would kill her and avenge myself, our love, everything we had ever been, we could have been, I would end it all by snuffing the life out of her. After nine y
