Maisie

I threw my body in front of Lance as Beta Cassian’s sword bore down on him. The sword cut through my clothes and sliced the skin of my stomach. I winced in pain as I covered my son with my body, shielding him from Keith's terrifying gaze.

“What?” Keith sneered, “You'll die protecting your son?”

I could hear the mockery in his voice. It was evident that he did not care one bit about killing an innocent child if it was just to hurt me.

“Please,” I begged, “the boy has done nothing.”

“Take him away,” Keith roared at his Beta.

I shook my head and held onto Lance desperately.

“You'll have to kill me first,” I protested.

Keith signalled to Cassian and he grabbed the boy forcefully from my arms. I tried to follow Cassian to fight for my son's return, but Keith blocked my path.

He looked into my eyes, his gaze burning into mine.

“You could not care less about leaving me all alone in that pack and yet you care about being separated from your son?” The tone of his voice was full of bitterness and naturally, I wanted to tell him that he was pathetic for uttering those words.

Leaving him all alone?

He had amended his relationship with his father and slept with another woman. He was the one who had left me all alone, so what was he talking about now?

But the life of my son was at his mercy so I fell to my knees and begged.

“I'll do anything,” I pleaded, “please don't kill my son.”

He threw his head back and laughed bitterly, as if I had said something funny.

“I should spare the life of your son?”

I nodded my head repeatedly, throwing away what was left of my pride to appeal for my son's life. Lance meant the world to me. He was the reason I woke up every morning and kept going in spite of how difficult it was for me.

“Yes,” I pleaded, “he's innocent in all this. Your problem is with me and not my son. He has done nothing wrong. He does not deserve to suffer.”

Both my hands were held up, rubbing against each other to reflect my desperation.

“I do not want to,” his voice was nonchalant.

“I will take immense pleasure in taking away his life just like you ran from me, making me look like a stupid fool in front of the entire pack. How did you think it felt like, huh? Being the Alpha with the runaway lover? Hoping every day that you will return to me, only to find out that you've been whoring around and playing house in the human realm.”

His words were laced with bitterness and anger. I had hurt him deeply, that was certain. But what right did he have to be angry?

“You… Do you even know why I had to leave? Did you bother to ask?” The question slipped out before I could take it back.

His eyes widened in bitter amusement, “Are you defending yourself now?”

He was daring me with that question, subtly reminding me that my child was just outside and he could order his death with just one word.

“No,” I shook my head, “I was wrong but my son…”

“It's always your son this! Your son that! And I'm sick of it!” he screamed.

“Keith…”

His eyes flashed red with anger, “Don't you dare call my name with that filthy mouth of yours.”

I looked into his eyes, heartbroken at the lack of love there. He had once used those eyes to gaze into mine like they were filled with stars.

Keith lifted me by the collar of my shirt, forcing me to stand up and bringing my face close to his.

I opened my mouth before he could give the order to end my son's life, “I'll do anything you want me to do.”

“Anything?” he smirked, his lips curving upwards.

I nodded, “Anything.”

“So you will return to the pack, huh?” he asked me.

I had been so out of touch with the pack that I wondered if his father was still alive.

“Do you hesitate? Should I call Cassian? Tell him to make your boy's head roll on the ground?” he bent his head to the side a little bit, “Would you like to watch it happen?”

It was not right for him to utter such dreary words and still goosebumps spruced my arm, not out of fear but of anticipation of his touch. Because my body remembered. My body remembered how he lit up my world with his big rough hands.

I swallowed, trying to get my head back to the current situation. Keith was threatening my son. Why could my body not recall the pain that had gone into delivering Lance instead?

“I’ll follow you back to the pack,” I said, against my best wishes.

Keith smiled. He was enjoying himself.

He pushed me against the wall suddenly and lifted my chin with his finger, bringing my face closer to his until I could feel his hot breath on my face.

“Kiss me,” he said and I hated that my body leaned in to do his bidding. But I stopped myself, suddenly charged with anger at him and also myself. What did he think of me? That I was cheap? That I would give my body to him so easily?

I stared at him with fury in my eyes and no intention of kissing him.

“Cassian!”

I leaned forward to kiss him, shutting him up.

His tongue tasted of mint and a longing that said he had been waiting for years to do this. I kissed him back with equal fervour, savouring his tongue hungrily, surprising myself with how much I enjoyed something that was intended to punish me.

He pulled back suddenly, panting and out of breath as he gazed into my eyes lustfully.

“You’ll be my mistress when you return to the pack,” he said in a hoarse voice, his hands touched my bare shoulders, “I'll give you a nice place in the pack house and all you have to do is tend to my needs.”

I was trembling softly with pleasure as my body recalled the heights he had taken me to. But I had to remember that things were different now. And what he was asking was beneath me. I had been his lover once, a soon-to-be wife as his fiancée, and now he wanted me to return to the same pack as a mere mistress?

The humiliation!

He brought his lips close to my ear, “You can refuse me but then you'll be burying your son tonight.”

He brought his face close to mine again, “so what's it going to be? he asked hungrily, “you'll be my mistress or…”

“I'll follow you to the Silvermoon pack,” I said softly. I could endure any amount of humiliation if it came to my son.

Keith smiled, feeling victorious.

He took a step back and eyed me, “Don't get any funny ideas, Maisie. If you try to run away, I'll kill that pretty boy of yours, understand?”

I nodded my head, more out of fear than anything else. He walked out of my small apartment and when he returned, he came back with Cassian and Lance.

Lance ran into my arms and I wrapped my arms protectively around him.

I would do anything to protect my son from Keith.

Maisie I had never seen Alpha Theodore before but when he walked into the library I froze from the aura he exuded as Alpha of the pack. No one had to tell me that he was Keith's father. I knew instantly. “Father,” Keith addressed the Alpha with no particular warmth, “it is rude to barge into my personal space without knocking.” Alpha Theodore was not looking at his son. He was looking at me intensely. I felt like I was prey and he wanted to gobble me up. “I learned someone entered the pack house without…” “This is Maisie,” Keith cut him off, “and she's with me. Maisie, my father, Theodore.” Goosebumps rose on my arms as Keith introduced me to the Alpha. Hanging out with Keith was one thing but meeting the Alpha so casually was quite another. I was so stunned that I could not string a sentence together. “Has she no tongue?” the Alpha asked. His eyes had not left mine since he stepped into the library. “Father…” Keith sounded angry. “Your Majesty,” I courtesied awkwardly, not q

Keith Conversation flowed between us naturally. We talked like we had known each other for ages. “Don’t get me wrong,” I said to her, “I love a good poem. I think that they are unnecessarily complicated.” Maisie looked at me like she could absolutely not relate to what I was saying. “You really mean this?” she laughed softly. “Yes. It’s true.” “What you call complicated is the artistry of poetry,” she shared, her eyes alive with ideas as she spoke, “what would be complicated is science. I do feel like sometimes scholars deliberately make it sound hard with weird terms, but it’s really all simple.” “You must be so smart,” I did admire her mind, “Is that why you got the scholarship?” A frown crossed her brows and I felt bad instantly for bringing up the topic. “You don’t have to answer…” “It’s okay,” she replied quickly, “yes. I had the highest scores in the entrance examinations. I guess I only scored low on the physical test.” “The physical test?” “I don’t know a thing abo

  • THE ALPHA’S RUNAWAY LOVER    CHAPTER 68

Maisie We never spoke about it. It was something we both endured quietly and then carried on with our lives the next day like nothing ever happened. But when my mother walked into my room the next morning while I rummaged through my wardrobe for what to wear, I noticed her swollen cheek and it broke my heart. It was one reason I was willing to endure humiliation at the Academy. I knew there was a better life for us after that. I could get a respectable job and save us both from our monster. And yet my mother had a bright smile on her face when she walked into my room. She looked simply radiant. It was just who she was. I wondered sometimes how she had ended up with a monster like my father. “Wow!” she remarked, looking at my clothes strewn across the floor and everywhere else. “I just don't have what to wear,” I whined. It was true too. I had nothing to wear for a party. My clothes to school already made me look so inferior. I could not imagine showing up at the pack house in cl

  • THE ALPHA’S RUNAWAY LOVER    CHAPTER 67

Maisie I felt the tips of my fingers tremble when I saw Betsy on my living room couch, that sadistic smirk on her lips and that evil glint in her eyes. Her smile widened when our eyes met. “Your friend is here again,” My mother looked cheerful. If only she knew!“I wonder why you two don't just come in together,” my mother said, looking between both of us. “I wasn't planning on coming here today,” Betsy said, her eyes directly on me, “but I changed my mind at the last minute.” I bunched my fingers in a fist beside me. “What do you want?” I asked her. She really was not planning on abusing me in front of my mother, was she? She was a wicked person so I would not be surprised if she was capable of doing that. “There's a party on Saturday,” she said, “I just found out and I wanted you to know about it.” Her eyes glistened with happiness I knew stemmed from absolute cruelty, “All the cool kids would be coming. It'll be fun. Tell me you'll come.” Her act as my friend was complete

  • THE ALPHA’S RUNAWAY LOVER    CHAPTER 66

MaisieMy father had a way of making me lose my mind. His very presence annoyed me, and it had all started when I was still a small child. He would always find every reason to hit me, calling it discipline. He was very harsh on me growing up. It was almost like he hated me. And when I asked my mother if perhaps I was not really his son, she had told me he would have killed me if he thought that I was not his son. He had stopped hitting me eventually because I had started training to fight and would fight him back and mostly win. Now we had long arguments and shouting matches and threatened each other openly. It was a hate-hate relationship that I had with my father. Nothing more. There was no love. At least, I had never sensed that he held such a feeling for me. He only saw me as his replacement but always pointed out how I was lacking the qualities to take over from him successfully. I was determined to prove him wrong. I dropped my bag and walked out of my room and the pack house.

  • THE ALPHA’S RUNAWAY LOVER    CHAPTER 65

KeithMaisie was an interesting person. She made me happy, it was just too easy to talk to her and with her. She knew a lot of things too. It was a breath of fresh air from girls within the royal circle who made themselves dumb to appear appealing to me. That has always irritated me. But not Maisie—she knew so many things and the things she did not know, she was ready to listen attentively, she loved knowledge. ‘Don’t fall in love, Keith,’ my wolf said to me all of a sudden. I tried to push Alden out of my mind but he came back to whisper to me, ‘Don’t…’ ‘She’s perfect,’ I told him, ‘the goddess has to make her my mate.’ ‘So you'll reject your mate for her?’ I smiled to myself. ‘She’s the only one for me, Alden. I know she's my mate.’ If I could see Alden, I knew he would be rolling his eyes at me. But I did not care what he thought. The only thing that mattered right now was how I felt about Maisie. And I knew it was cringe, but I did feel butterflies in my stomach when I look

Keith The fear in her eyes should have satisfied me. I was meant to take satisfaction in the fact that I was finally getting my revenge. Maisie“Look at the time you’re coming in!” my boss, Silver Cross, shouted at me so loudly that his spit landed on my face. The action irked me, but I had to remind myself that I was in the human world and this human was my boss. Even though I had enough strength as a werewolf to rip him to shreds,

Maisie“Stand guard outside,” Keith ordered Cassian, “I'll be back once night falls.” Keith was speaking in low tones, but my ears were listening intently to every sound. I was already thinking of how I would escape. I had done it nine years ago and I would certainly do it again. I was not scared
