The fear in her eyes should have satisfied me. I was meant to take satisfaction in the fact that I was finally getting my revenge. I would kill her and avenge myself, our love, everything we had ever been, we could have been, I would end it all by snuffing the life out of her. After nine years of searching for her across realms, after years of anger and humiliation, I had finally found Maisie Cranwood again. I should have crushed her throat without hesitation and ended everything between us once and for all. Instead, my wolf paced restlessly inside me. “Who are you?” she asked weakly as my hand tightened around her neck. The question caught me off guard. Slowly, I loosened my grip and stared into her eyes. “You’re pretending not to know me now?” I asked bitterly. The fact that she would deny knowledge of me was even more painful than her betrayal at leaving me in the first place. It felt like she had dipped her hands right into my chest, and had ripped my heart out and torn it into shreds. Her breathing was uneven as she staggered backwards cautiously, trying to create distance between us. “Who the hell are you?” she demanded again. “I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.” I laughed harshly. If she had denied everything else, perhaps I might have entertained the possibility for a second. But no ordinary human could stand before a room full of Alphas and tremble the way she did. I closed the distance between us again and grabbed her arm before she could retreat farther. “You almost convinced me,” I murmured, “until you claimed to be human.” Fear flashed briefly across her face before disappearing again. There she was. My Maisie. “So tell me, Maisie,” I said quietly. “Or should I call you May now?” “Get away from me, Keith,” she snapped, pulling against my grip. “I want nothing to do with you.” A cold smile crossed my lips because no one else could say that to my face and live a second longer. “You don’t get to make that decision.” “I’m not your slave.” “No,” I agreed calmly, leaning closer to her. “But you are mine.” Hatred burned in her blue eyes. She eyed me like I was a monster. One would think that it was my fault that we were the we were now. “You sound exactly like your father.” Rage exploded inside me immediately. Maisie knew exactly what to say to make me lose my temper completely. My fingers dug painfully into her arm. “How dare you compare me to him?” She sneered at me as though she enjoyed provoking my anger. Before I could lose control completely, Cassian my beta stepped into the restaurant. “Alpha,” he said carefully, “we should leave.” “Bind her,” I ordered immediately. Maisie’s eyes widened with panic. For one foolish second, she actually tried to run. Cassian caught her easily and restrained her wrists behind her back. As he secured the ropes around her hands, he spoke quietly. “What about the child?” Everything inside me went still. I turned sharply toward him. “What child?” Cassian frowned slightly. “The report mentioned it. Maisie has a son.” The words settled heavily in my chest. A son? For one humiliating second, hope stirred inside me before I crushed it instantly. No. If she had been carrying my child, she would never have disappeared without a word. I crouched in front of her slowly and noticed the colour draining from her face. “You have a son?” I asked softly. “No,” she answered too quickly. You’re a liar. “You’re trembling, Maisie.” Her breathing became uneven. “It’s me you want,” she whispered desperately. “Leave my son out of this.” The desperation in her voice only confirmed everything. So she truly had built another life after abandoning me. I rose slowly to my feet. “Where is the boy?” I asked Cassian. “Should we search her apartment?” Maisie struggled harder against the restraints immediately. “No!” A dark smile crossed my lips. That reaction alone was enough. *** I kicked the fragile door open, ripping the door from its weak frame, and looked around the small space in disgust. “This is where you’ve been living?” Cassian dragged Maisie inside behind me while I surveyed the apartment carefully. The scent of rose petals and berries lingered heavily in the air. Her scent clung to every corner of the room as though she had tried desperately to build warmth inside this miserable little place. Then my eyes caught something else. A small blanket was folded neatly on the couch. Children’s books are stacked beside a chair. Tiny shoes were abandoned near the doorway. My gaze darkened. There were signs of a child everywhere. Maisie noticed where I was looking and immediately stepped into the hallway behind her. “He isn’t here,” she said quickly. “Move,” I ordered. “No.” I grabbed her collar roughly and pulled her toward me. “Do not test my patience.” Her eyes were filled with hatred. “Just take me and leave him alone.” There was no denial, only an urge to protect her son. I should have felt victorious seeing her reduced to begging for another man’s child, but instead something bitter settled heavily inside my chest. “I was willing to forgive you once,” I said quietly. She spat directly in my face. “I would rather die.” My jaw clenched tightly. Even now, after everything she had done, my heart still reacted to her voice, her face, the scent of her skin. By the goddess, she was still beautiful. I tore my gaze away from her before my resolve weakened further. “Search the apartment,” I ordered Cassian. But before he could move, a soft cough came from deeper inside the apartment. The room fell silent. A moment later, small footsteps echoed softly through the hallway. Maisie went completely pale. “Lance…” she whispered under her breath. A little boy stepped into the living room rubbing sleep from his eyes. He looked weak and pale, his small face flushed as his confused gaze moved around the room. “Mom?” he asked quietly. Maisie immediately rushed toward him protectively, placing herself between him and us. Fear filled her eyes as she held the boy tightly against her chest. My gaze remained fixed on the top of the child’s head which bobbed over Maisie's shoulders. She shielded the child like she was protecting him from my gaze. Then slowly, very slowly, anger twisted inside me again. This was the child she had chosen over me. She had hidden this child for years and she was willing to throw her pride away to beg that his life be spared. I looked away from the boy coldly. “Off with the child’s head.”KeithI already knew her answer, yet my heart still twisted nervously, and my breath caught as I waited to hear it. She had given it to me earlier, but there was something about standing under the sunset, in front of the tree I had planted with my mother as a kid, bending on one knee and holding out my mother’s ring to the girl of my dreams that made me extremely nervous.‘She could say no,’ Alden was not helping matters either.“Yes, yes,” she held out her hand for me to slip the ring onto her slender finger.‘Beautiful! Beautiful!’ Alden squealed for joy in my head.I looked at her eyes, lit up and crinkling at the corners, tears of joy slipping down her cheeks. Goddess she looked so damn ethereal, and I could swear there was no one else as beautiful as she was.Maisy threw her hands around me, bringing me away from my thoughts as she jumped on me. I caught her by the back of her thighs and kissed her forehead gently, glee filling me up. As soon as I pulled away, she rested her fore
Maisie I froze when the Alpha uttered those words. "Fine, you win, son. I will apologize to your mate."It felt like I was dreaming. The Alpha, apologizing to me? Who was I to subject him to such humiliation?Keith stopped, too, and together we turned to look at the Alpha. My face was completely pale, but I saw a smirk on the Alpha's face—a part of him was clearly enjoying watching me squirm."I am very sorry," he said. The tone of his voice, however, revealed just how much he loathed the position he was in. "It will not happen again. I will not force you to..."He glanced at his son, wondering if he should continue. Keith's face remained stern. If the Alpha didn't apologize properly, Keith would probably make his father repeat it—something I was sure the Alpha didn't want."I will never force you to do anything you do not wish to do," the Alpha continued stiffly. "I give you my word."Keith smiled at his father. "See? Was that so hard to do?"The Alpha grunted and stalked off, clear
KeithI should have known my father was up to no good when he bound me and shipped me to a convention in the human realm.I wasn't sure what the purpose was. He claimed we had business to take care of there. It had been so abrupt, and impromptu that I had not even had time to say goodbye to Maisie or my friends, so no one knew where I had gone or when I would be returning. The entire time I was there, I remained anxious, worried that something might have happened to Maisie. Alden was restless, too, reminding me every second that my father might try to do something insane to my mate. The very second I could, I left the human realm and came back without letting my father know. If I wanted to catch him in the midst of his shenanigans, I would have to do it unawares. So when I walked into the pack house and wove my way through several expansive hallways, I was not expecting to see Maisie sprinting hard, running away from one of my father's most trusted men, Curtis. Curtis grabbed the hem
Maisie My mother had been right about one thing. The pack house was a dangerous place to live in.Honestly, I was just grateful that I had survived an assassination attempt. It was really scary waking up from that. And now I was standing in front of the person who was most likely to have tried to kill me. I wanted to ask her directly if she had a hand in it, but I knew it would be foolish to do so. So I played dumb when she stared down at me, clearly pissed off that the Alpha was sending her back to her pack."What? Are you happy? Do you think you've won because I'm going back to my pack?" she sneered at me. Angry, she moved forward, closing the space between us, clearly just to intimidate me. "I'll be back, and I assure you, when I become Luna, I will make you watch as I turn Keith against you. He will hate you in ways you wouldn't believe possible.""Is there a problem here?" Cassian came up to dispel the rising tension."Of course not," Olga said smoothly."Okay," he said, steppin
Olga"Do you think Keith suspects me?"Reuben looked red with fear. I hated weak-minded people. How could he be scared already? And even if Keith found out, what was Keith to do to Reuben? Still, I had to find a way to calm him down so I would not be linked to any of this if the truth ever came out."You need to stay calm, Reuben. You've left no trace behind."Reuben looked into my eyes. "Why is it that you are not worried at all?"I sighed softly. "Why would I be worried? I had nothing to do with this. I just wanted to help you achieve your revenge. She deserved what was coming to her. She deserves to die. We both know that.""Yes, yes, you are right," Reuben said. "I mean, how can she get away with killing Betsy? It makes no sense."I smiled in my mind. I had convinced Reuben that Maisie was responsible for Betsy's death—that the poison had been found in her locker at school, but the matter had been shut down and ignored because Maisie was Keith's girlfriend. I had also planted the
Keith The men who attacked Maisie had confessed very quickly. “She called herself the handmaid,” one of them said. He had an ugly scar that ran from underneath his right eye to his chin. He called himself Scorn. “The handmaid?” I echoed because no one bore that name. It was clearly an alias. No one would be foolish enough to hurt Maisie and not try to cover up their tracks. “We don't know anything more,” Scorn said, but his partner remained quiet. “We didn't even see her face. We were to get the work done and then get paid.”I turned to look at Cassian who stood quietly watching their facial expressions closely. He was very good at spotting lies, and I was looking at his face for a cue that the two men were lying to me. “If you did not see her face,” I said, “how did you know it was a woman?” “We never said it was a woman,” Scorn replied. I tried to keep my surprise in check. “So a man called himself the handmaid?” If they were making things up, I was going to make them regret
Keith“I would like to see her,” Olga insisted, “I have been looking for a new slave myself to help with keeping up the spirits in my parties.” I maintained the smile on my face, trying not to upset her, “then we shall send a call for slaves in the pack,” I said easily, guiding my wife away from M
Maisie I threw my body in front of Lance as Beta Cassian’s sword bore down on him. The sword cut through my clothes and sliced the skin of my stomach. I winced in pain as I covered my son with my body, shielding him from Keith's terrifying gaze. “What?” Keith sneered, “You'll die protecting your
Maisie“Stand guard outside,” Keith ordered Cassian, “I'll be back once night falls.” Keith was speaking in low tones, but my ears were listening intently to every sound. I was already thinking of how I would escape. I had done it nine years ago and I would certainly do it again. I was not scared
Maisie“Look at the time you’re coming in!” my boss, Silver Cross, shouted at me so loudly that his spit landed on my face. The action irked me, but I had to remind myself that I was in the human world and this human was my boss. Even though I had enough strength as a werewolf to rip him to shreds,
