Jason’s POV

The Council’s ultimatum sat open on my desk, the deadline circled in red.

Before the Solstice.

They wanted an heir. They wanted certainty about the bloodline, and they wanted me to act before they decided my hesitation had become a threat to the pack.

I had spent months avoiding this conversation. Every time the subject came up, I found another reason to push it aside. Devlin and I had talked about children early in our marriage. She wanted them. I had promised we would have them when the time was right.

Then the months passed. We tried. It didn’t happen. Eventually, we stopped talking about it because every failed month left something painful between us. I looked at the document again, thinking about how long I had allowed Devlin to carry that pain alone.

A knock sounded at the door.My mother entered without waiting for an answer. Her eyes went straight to the paper on my desk.

“They gave you a deadline?”

“Yes.”

“And what are you going to do?”

I closed the document. “Talk to Devlin.”

Her expression tightened. “Jason, the Council is not asking for another discussion.”

“I know what they’re asking for.”

“Then you understand what is at stake.”

“I understand.” I kept my voice steady. “But I’m not making a decision about her body because the Council wants an heir.”

My mother stared at me. “You need a solution.”

“I need to speak to my mate first.”

She said nothing else before leaving, but the silence she left behind carried its own pressure.

I found Devlin in her office later that afternoon, working through a stack of reports.

“I need to talk to you.”

She looked up. “About what?”

“The Council.”

Something changed in her expression, though she said nothing.

“They gave me until the Solstice to secure an heir,” I said. “They’re putting pressure on me to find a solution.”

Her fingers tightened around the report in front of her.

“What solution?”

“I don’t know yet. That’s why I’m here.”

She waited.

“I want to know what you want, Devlin. Not what the Council wants. Not what my parents want.”

Her eyes dropped to the desk.

“I still want a child.”

The answer came quietly, but it landed hard.

“I stopped talking about it because every month I wasn’t pregnant felt like another way I was failing you. I could see the disappointment, even when you tried not to show it. After a while, I couldn’t keep putting myself through that.”

My chest tightened. “You should have told me.”

“You should have asked.”

There was no accusation in her voice. That made it worse.

“I should have,” I admitted. “I’m sorry.”

She looked at me then, and I saw how much she had kept to herself.

“I want us to see a doctor,” I said. “It's not because the Council ordered it or anything, I just want us to understand what’s happening instead of letting you blame yourself.”

Her face went still. “And if there is something wrong with me?”

“I don’t know.”

The honesty seemed to matter more than a comforting answer. “I won’t lie to you about that,” I continued. “Whatever the doctor says, we face it together. But I won’t make that decision without you.”

She took a slow breath, her eyes staying on mine. “Okay. I’ll go.”

I reached across the desk and covered her hand with mine. She didn’t pull away, but she didn’t lean into me either.

I left her office with a strange ache in my chest. For the first time, I wondered whether I was trying to save my mate because I loved her or because I was afraid of what I would lose if I failed the Council. I didn’t have an answer.

Devlin’s POV

After Jason left, I stayed at my desk, staring at the reports without reading a word. His conversation had unsettled me more than I wanted to admit.

I still wanted a child. I wanted the family we had once imagined together, before every month without a pregnancy turned that dream into another source of shame. Some nights, I had wondered whether my missing wolf was part of the reason. Whether my body was simply refusing to give Jason what he needed.

Now the Council had placed a deadline over our heads, and I couldn’t stop wondering what had really brought Jason to my office. Did he want a child with me, or did he want an heir because the Council was forcing his hand? The question followed me through the evening.

Later, I was passing the library when I heard voices inside, speaking in French.

I stopped.

Chloe spoke first. “Il essaie encore avec elle.”

He’s trying with her again.

I stayed still, listening. Isabelle answered, her voice low. “Jason pense qu'il peut réparer quelque chose qui est déjà brisé.”

Jason thinks he can fix something that is already broken.

My stomach tightened.

Then Chloe asked, “Et si elle tombe enceinte?”

What if she gets pregnant?

There was a brief silence before Isabelle replied. “Alors tout changera.”

Then everything will change.

I stared at the closed door. They weren’t discussing whether I wanted a child. But rather, what my pregnancy would mean for my position. Chloe had already imagined a future without me in it, and Isabelle clearly knew about it.

I heard Chloe speak again, more quietly this time.

“Et si elle ne peut pas lui donner un héritier?”

What if she can’t give him an heir?

Isabelle answered without hesitation.

“Alors le Conseil trouvera quelqu'un qui le peut.”

Then the Council will find someone who can.

My blood ran cold. I stepped away from the door before they could hear me.

All evening, Jason’s words kept returning to me. He had asked what I wanted, listened and apologized. Part of me wanted to believe that meant something.

But now I understood the position I was standing in. My body had become part of a political deadline. My ability to have a child could decide whether I remained Luna.

I returned to my room and closed the door behind me. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I replayed every word I had heard. The fear was still there, but it no longer stood alone. Anger had finally joined it.

For years, I had waited for Jason to notice what was happening around me. I waited for him to speak when his mother crossed a line, for him to make it clear that I was his mate and Luna, not a temporary place-holder until someone more useful came along.

Tonight, I finally understood that waiting was costing me more than I could afford. If Jason chose to stand beside me, I would see it. But I would no longer build my future around the hope that he would.

I had spent too much time trying to prove I deserved the place I already held. If they were planning to take it from me, they were going to have to face me first.

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 15: The Solstice Gala

Devlin’s POVI sat in front of the vanity mirror, staring at my reflection. Tonight was the Solstice Gala. The night Jason was supposed to announce Chloe as his future Luna. The night my marriage would officially become nothing more than something people talked about in the past. I wasn't going there to fight for Jason. That part of my life was over.I wasn't going to beg him to remember his promises or cry in front of everyone. And I certainly wasn't going there looking for revenge. I'd spent enough time hurting over that man. I was tired. Not the kind of tiredness that sleep could fix. I was tired of being the woman everyone felt sorry for. Tired of being whispered about and hearing the word wolfless as if it were my identity, as though everything I had done as Luna meant nothing because I couldn't shift. And despite the strange vision I'd experienced days ago,the sound of thundering paws, the golden light, the feeling of something moving inside me—I wasn't expecting anything to hap

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 14: The Eve of Surrender

Jason's POVThe office was silent except for the pendulum clock ticking against the far wall. I stood by the window, staring over the courtyard without really seeing it.Tomorrow night was the Solstice Gala. The night I was supposed to stand before the entire pack, solidify my power, and announce Chloe as my future Luna. Everything had already been arranged. The seating, the visiting Alphas, the Council, the announcement, the annulment papers. Even the speech I was supposed to give had been written for me.It was everything my family had planned for. Everything I'd been told a true Alpha needed to do. Secure the bloodline. Protect the pack. Choose strength over weakness. Choose the future over personal feelings. I'd heard those words so many times they'd almost become part of me, but now I couldn't understand why following them felt like the floor was giving way beneath me.Below, servants moved through the courtyard preparing the estate for tomorrow night. Guards were being stationed

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 13: Broken Promises

Jason's POVMy hands were still shaking when I stood in the dark hallway. Downstairs my parents whispered in terrified, breathless tones about everything that had happened. But staring at the locked bedroom door, the fear faded into a hollow, sickening realization of what I'd done.I didn't sleep. Not after Devlin's face. Not after the way she asked about Chloe.Instead I sat alone in my study, with an untouched glass of whiskey in front of me. For the first time in years, the room felt too quiet. I kept hearing her voice. Whose child is it? And my answer. It's mine. There was no taking those words back. No excuse that could make them less cruel.I leaned back and closed my eyes. And somehow, despite everything that had happened, my mind didn't take me to Chloe. It took me back to Devlin.Four years earlier.I was twenty-four the first time I saw her, at a Council gathering hosted by Red Moon trade agreements, the usual. I was near the entrance, half listening to an elder complain abou

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 12: The Things Buried With Her

Devlin's POVLong after I left the archives, I sat at my desk, the photograph resting in front of me. I'd turned it over so many times the corners were starting to soften, reading those three handwritten words until they felt carved into my mind. From the Old Lands.Three words. Three words that gave me more questions than they ever answered. My thumb ran along the worn edge of the photo. "Who were you?" I whispered it to the empty room.Nobody answered. The silence just sat there with me.Then I slipped the photograph into my handbag and left the office. There was a smaller library at the far end of the estate, the kind of room most people forgot existed — dusty volumes, old records kept by early Alphas, dust that hadn't moved in years. I shut the door behind me and started pulling books.Old territories. Ancient lineages. Migration registries. Anything that mentioned the Old Lands. What little I found was vague. Then a worn, leather-bound map caught my eye.On the table, I opened it

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 11: A Name From The Past

Devlin's POVThe clinic door closed behind me.I stood on the steps, thinking about everything I'd just learned. My answers were still missing, but one thing was clear: if there was more to my mother's past, I wouldn't find it at the clinic. That old administrative building came to mind. Our pack archives.Birth records. Migration records. Council documents. Old reports. If my mother had arrived in Red Moon more than twenty years ago, there had to be something on paper.Maybe I'd find something there. Then I started walking.Looking into my own family history didn't need anyone's permission. And if my father had hidden part of it from me, I was going to find out why.The older part of our pack grounds was quiet when I reached it. Most pack members didn't come here anymore. Newer offices had taken over almost everything, leaving this place to old council records, property documents, and files nobody bothered opening unless they had a reason. And I had one. So I pushed open the heavy doo

  • THE ALPHA'S SILENT BETRAYAL    Chapter 10: The Buried Records

Devlin's POVI didn't sleep. Not after what I heard. Not after the way Jason looked at me when I asked if Chloe was pregnant. It's mine. Those two words wouldn't leave me alone. They just kept playing over and over, like my brain wanted to make sure I never forgot the sound of his voice saying them. At some point, I wondered if he slept in one of the guest rooms.Anyway, I'm glad he did. I didn't want him anywhere near me. And for the first time since I met him, I didn't care anymore. I was too tired of chasing after a man who'd already decided that our bond meant nothing to him.Sleep finally took me sometime near morning, shallow and useless. When I woke up, the sun was already coming through the curtains, and my body felt like it belonged to someone else. Heavy. Wrong. I turned my head towards his side of the bed. I was used to his scent. Cedar and rain. But now it smelled faint, making the hollow in my chest feel worse. My head pounded when I sat up. I hadn't had enough sleep. I d
