MERRYN

“Then why did you stay after you found me?”

The question hung between us. Rhydian didn’t answer. For once, since I have met him, the silence coming from him didn’t feel calculated. It felt like he genuinely didn’t know what to say.

I folded my arms.

“Well?”

He looked away.

“At first,” he said slowly, “I thought you might be the answer to Nocturne’s decline.”

My chest tightened. There it was. The truth I had been afraid of.

“The answer,” I repeated.

“Yes.”

“My blood.”

“Your Eclipse blood.

MERRYNI couldn’t stop staring at the map.My name was written beneath the Eclipse symbol. Not in the corner. Not as a note. Right in the center. Like everything on that page led back to me. Tavish spread the map flat across the table.“Don’t touch it yet.”I looked at him, “Why?”“We don’t know whether there’s a tracking spell attached to it.”Rhydian’s expression hardened.“Check it.”Tavish pulled a small device from his pocket and passed it over the paper. Nothing happened.“No active spell,” he said.I reached for the map.The paper was cold beneath my fingers.I unfolded it completely. There were dates. Dozens of them. My stomach tightened.“Those aren’t recent.”Tavish leaned closer.“How far back?”I traced one of the markings.“Three years.”Another.“Four.”My voice became quieter.“Five.”Rhydian looked at me.“What?”I pointed to the date.“This was before my divorce.”He moved closer.“How far before?”“Before Lucian and I even separated.”Tavish picked up another sheet.“

It hurt more hearing it said plainly than it had when I have suspected it. I walked toward the table and picked up one of the archive records.“Was any of it real?”“What?”“The way you treated me.”His brow furrowed.“You mean what?”“Kindness.”He stared at me.“When you spoke to me like I wasn’t an embarrassment. When you looked at me without making me feel like I needed

RHYDIANThe black mark on Merryn’s palm had not faded by morning. She had tried everything. Water and a healing slave. Even Tavish’s suggestion of holding her hand beneath moonlight. Nothing worked. She stood at the archive table, rubbing her palm with her thumb.“It’s still there.”“I can see that,” I said. She looked up.“Then stop staring at it.”“I’m trying to understand it.”“So am I.”I picked up one of the training-bond stones.“We can test it again.”Her expression changed immediately.“No.”“It isn’t a living bond.”“You said that yesterday.”“And it remains true.”“I broke the last one.”“You loosened it first.”“Then I broke it.”“Because you panicked.”She looked away.I set the stone down.“Merryn, I’m not asking you to touch anyone’s mate bond.”“I know.”“This will be a training tether. It exists only to teach young wolves how bonds feel.”She glanced at the stone“And if I break it?”“Then we’ll know the mark reacts to severing.”“And if I can’t control it?”“Then we s

MERRYNRhydian arrived before I could decide what to do with my mother’s letters. He stood in the doorway of the sitting room, his gaze moving from the open lockbox to the papers spread across the floor.“You found something.”I nodded, “My mother’s letters.”He stepped inside but didn’t touch anything.“Can I?”I handed him one. He read it quickly. Just Then his expression changed.“What?”He looked at me.“She knew about the Council.”“She feared them.”Rhydian picked up another letter.“She knew about the Eclipse.”“And she wanted me to stay ordinary.”He lowered the paper.“Merryn…”“Don’t.”He stopped.“Everyone keeps telling me how much my parents wanted to protect me. But nobody tells me what they were protecting me from.”Rhydian looked at the unfinished sentence.“If they discover what her blood can do, they will make her…”His jaw tightened.“We need to compare this with the archive records.”“Why?”“Because your mother’s letters tell us what she feared. The records may tell

MERRY I returned to the family estate before sunset. I hadn’t told Rhydian where I was going. Not because I wanted to hide it from him.I simply didn’t want another guard following me around while I searched through my own family’s secrets. The estate looked exactly as I remembered it. That somehow made everything worse.I unlocked the front door and stepped inside.“Hello?”Only silence answered. I had no intention of explaining myself to anyone tonight. I walked upstairs and stopped outside Cressida’s old sitting room. This was where she’d kept the few things that belonged to my mother. At least, that was what she had always told me.I opened the door. Dust covered the shelves. The curtains were drawn. I walked toward the cabinet in the corner and opened the first drawer, the second drawer.Old photographs. I pulled them out one by one. My parents. Cressida. Me as a baby.I stared at the photograph. My mother was holding me.She looked young and happy. Nothing like the woman from

LUCIANThe burning lasted only a few seconds. But I felt it long after the mark disappeared. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my chest.Nothing. No symbol. No light. Just skin.I pressed my palm against the spot where it had appeared.“Merryn.”Her name slipped out before I could stop it. My wolf stirred. I clenched my jaw.“No.”I stood and walked toward the mirror. This wasn’t the first strange reaction I had since Merryn left. The Bloodlock had been unstable since the divorce ceremony. I had felt sudden pain, flashes of emotion that weren’t mine, and once, for no reason I could explain, I’d woken up convinced Merryn was crying.I had dismissed all of it. This was another episode. It had to be. I pulled a shirt over my head. Then someone knocked.“Come in.”The door opened. My father stepped inside. He took one look at me and stopped. His eyes went straight to my chest.I frowned, “What?”He didn’t answer.“Father?”He took a step closer, “Take off your shirt.”I stared at hi
