Clara’s pov

“You’re not going to ask me to stop?”

Ronan stood at the edge of the clearing, arms crossed, expression unreadable in the filtered light.

He had seen everything, the young wolf’s desperation, the way I reached for the strained, ugly bond, the clean snap when I severed it.

Ethan was already gone, running hard for the ride he’d promised was waiting two towns over. The residual energy from the cut still crackled under my skin like static.

“No,” Ronan said. “I’m

Clara’s pov“You’ve been leaving footprints in the old roads, girl.”The voice came from the trees behind the cabin, dry and steady, like someone who had been waiting long enough to get comfortable with the dark. I turned fast, power already rising under my skin, gold light flickering at my fingertips, and found an old woman standing at the edge of the porch light. White hair braided back. Eyes the color of river stones. No scent of pack. No threat posture. Just presence heavy enough to make the night feel smaller.Ronan stepped out of the dark on my left, silent, eyes hard. “You’re a long way from any territory that still claims you, seer.”“I go where the cracks show,” she said, and looked straight at me instead of him. “And the cracks have been showing your name for weeks. The hollow that opened last night. The way the land answered when you pushed back. You’re louder than the stories that have been walking the roads.”I didn’t lower my hands. “Who are you?”“Names are for peopl

Clara’s pov“Something’s wrong with the trees.”Ronan was already moving before I finished the sentence. We’d been working on shields near the cabin when the air pressure changed, suddenly, heavy, like the moment before a storm that hadn’t been on any forecast. The power under my ribs surged in answer, sharp and involuntary, gold light flickering hard under my skin no matter how tightly I tried to lock it down.“Describe it,” he said, voice low and clipped. “Exactly what you’re feeling.”“They’re… watching. Not animals. The trees themselves, or whatever’s under them. And the ground feels thin, like it did in the reports from Moonridge when the borders started failing, but closer. Right under our feet.” I pressed a hand hard against my sternum. The heat was climbing fast, answering something I couldn’t see yet. “It’s reacting to me. To the power. I can feel the pull like a hook.”A low sound rolled through the woods, not wind, not an animal. More like the earth shifting its weight af

Clara’s pov“You’re quiet tonight.”Ronan’s voice came from the other side of the small fire we’d built at the edge of the clearing behind the cabin. Sparks drifted up toward a sky thick with stars. I sat with my knees drawn up, arms wrapped around them, the power under my ribs unusually still for once.“Just thinking.”“About Kael’s deadline, or about the fact that you almost lost the shield three times today when I pushed your range?”I huffed a short breath that wasn’t quite a laugh. “Both. And neither.” I turned my head to look at him. The firelight cut across his face, leaving half of it in shadow. “Do you ever get tired of sitting outside other people’s fights? Watching them, training through them, never quite stepping into the middle?”“All the time.” He fed another stick into the flames and watched it catch. “Doesn’t mean I stop. Walking away from the system doesn’t mean walking away from every person still caught inside it.”The silence that settled after that wasn’t uncomf

Clara’s pov“The alliance is cracking.”Theo looked up from the espresso machine, eyebrows raised. “Which alliance?”“Kael’s. With Silvercrest.” I dropped onto the stool and pulled the folded note from my pocket, smoothing it on the counter between us. “Traveler this morning. Two of them, actually. They were talking loud enough on purpose. Said the Silvercrest Alpha is done waiting. They’ve given Moonridge until the next full moon to either present a formal mating claim or watch the border agreements dissolve. And half the reason they’re pushing this hard is the Bondbreaker rumors.”Theo shut off the machine and wiped his hands on a towel, frowning. “They’re connecting it to him specifically?”“They’re connecting everything to him. The public rejection on my birthday. The letters he kept sending. The bond vanished like someone cut it with a knife. The stories are about a woman in a human town who can sever mate bonds permanently.” I tapped the note

Clara’s pov“Again.”Ronan’s voice cut through the clearing for the fourth time in an hour. I dropped my hands, the gold light fading from my fingers, and dragged in a breath that burned on the way down.“I had it that time.”“You had the flare. You didn’t have control. There’s a difference.” He circled me slowly, the same measured pace he had used every session since I moved into the cabin. “Anyone within half a mile felt that broadcast. Marcus would have your direction in under a minute. Do it again, and this time keep the signature inside your skin where it belongs.”I wiped sweat from my forehead with the back of my wrist and reset my stance the way he had drilled into me. Feet shoulder-width. Shoulders loose. Breath low. The power sat eager under my ribs, ready to pour out the way it had on the full moon and every time I’d severed a bond. Pulling it back in and making it stay there was harder than letting it run wild.I reached for it, sha

Clara’s pov“I’m moving out.”Marnie looked up from the grill, spatula in hand, one eyebrow already climbing. “Of the diner? Or out of town completely?”“Out of the room upstairs. I found a cabin on the edge of town. Small. One bedroom. Month-to-month lease. I need the space and the distance.”She set the spatula down and wiped her hands on her apron, giving me her full attention. “This about the scar-hand guy who’s been watching the street like he gets paid for it? Or the rumors that keep walking in with the travelers?”“Both. And the fact that every time someone comes looking for the Bondbreaker, the first place they check is where I work and where I sleep.” I leaned against the counter, arms folded. “I’m not running. I’m making it harder for them to find me in my sleep or corner me on the stairs after closing.”Marnie studied me for a long second, then nodded once. “Smart. When are you doing this?”“Tonight. I’ve got enough saved for the deposit a
