Everyone knew Clara was the girl no Alpha would ever choose. Curvy, quiet, and constantly overlooked, Clara had spent years believing she would never find her place in the ruthless world of werewolves. Until her twenty-first birthday. That night, the impossible happens. Clara discovers that her fated mate is none other than Alpha Kael Thorne, the powerful Alpha of Moonridge. For one breathtaking moment, she thinks her life is finally changing. Then Kael rejects her. In front of the entire pack. He chooses another woman, someone who can secure the political alliance his pack needs. Humiliated and heartbroken, Clara leaves the pack that same night. But in the quiet town of Millbrook, Clara begins to discover a strength she never knew she possessed, and a rare power over mate bonds that could change the entire werewolf world. As her abilities awaken, the supernatural world begins to take notice. Kael starts to regret the decision that drove her away, but Clara is no longer the girl who needed his approval. And when she meets Ronan Vale, a powerful lone Alpha who sees her worth beyond a mate bond, Clara begins to understand that love can be chosen. Kael may have been her fated mate. But Ronan is the man she chooses. Clara must decide whether to remain trapped by the rejection that once defined her or embrace the power, freedom, and future she has built for herself. Because she was never too much. She simply had to discover her worth.

Chapter 1

Clara’s pov

The music was too loud, the kind of bass that rattled the plastic cups on the table and made the floor vibrate under my boots.

Someone had strung fairy lights through the trees behind the pack house, and the whole clearing looked like it was trying too hard to be festive.

Twenty-one. That was a big number. The one everyone kept toasting to like it meant something.

I stood near the edge of the crowd with a half-empty bottle of beer I wasn’t drinking. My cousin Maya kept elbowing me, grinning.

“You look like you’re waiting for the sky to fall,” she said. “Loosen up. It’s your night.”

“I am loosened,” I muttered. “This is my loosened face.”

She snorted. “Sure. That’s why you’ve been scanning the trees for the last ten minutes.”

I hadn’t meant to. Alpha Kael’s pack always showed up to these things, protocol, politics, whatever.

But he’d never come to one of mine. Not once in the five years since I’d moved back after my parents died. I told myself I didn’t care. I almost believed it.

Then the air shifted.

It wasn’t a sound. It was pressure, sudden and heavy, like the moment before a storm breaks.

My wolf surged so hard I staggered. Heat flooded my chest, sharp and electric, racing down my spine. The beer bottle slipped from my fingers and hit the grass.

Every scent in the clearing sharpened at once, woodsmoke, pine, sweat, perfume and underneath it all, something new. Something that made my knees weak.

Mate.

The word slammed through me like a physical hit. I turned without thinking.

Kael stood at the top of the porch steps, tall and still, black shirt open at the throat, dark hair pushed back like he’d run his hands through it too many times.

His eyes found me instantly. Gold. Bright. Locked on mine.

The bond snapped into place between us so hard I felt it in my teeth.

People noticed. Conversations died. Heads turned. Someone laughed nervously, then stopped. Maya’s hand closed around my wrist.

“Clara…” she whispered.

I couldn’t answer. My pulse was hammering so loud I could barely hear anything else. He was walking toward me. Slow. Measured.

The crowd parted for him the way it always did. Every step made the pull stronger, tighter, until I could feel the exact distance between us like a live wire.

He stopped three feet away. Close enough that I caught his scent fully cedar, rain, something darker underneath.

My wolf pushed hard against my skin, desperate to get closer. I locked my knees and stayed put.

Kael’s voice was low, rough. “Clara.”

Just my name. Nothing else. His jaw was tight, a muscle jumping near his ear.

I could see the same shock in his eyes that I felt in my chest, the same recognition. For one stupid second I thought he was going to reach for me.

Instead he said, clear enough for the whole clearing to hear, “I reject you.”

The words hit harder than the bond had.

Silence. Absolute. Even the music seemed to cut out, though I knew it was still playing somewhere far away.

My ears rang. Heat flooded my face, then drained just as fast, leaving me cold.

Maya’s fingers dug into my arm. “What the hell…”

I pulled free. My voice came out steadier than I expected. “Say that again.”

Kael didn’t look away. “I reject the mate bond. You are not my Luna. You will never be.”

Someone in the crowd gasped. A few wolves shifted uncomfortably.

I felt every single pair of eyes on me, pity, curiosity, satisfaction from the ones who’d never liked the orphan girl who’d come back with nothing but her father’s old truck and a stubborn streak.

My wolf howled inside me, furious and hurting. I shoved her down hard. I would not break in front of them. Not here. Not for him.

“Why?” The question scraped out of me. I hated how small it sounded, so I forced more volume into it. “You owe me that much. Why?”

Kael’s face stayed carefully blank, but something flickered behind his eyes. Guilt, maybe. Or just calculation. “I don’t owe you explanations. The rejection stands. Accept it.”

“Like hell.” I took a step closer. The bond pulled taut between us, painful now, like a bruise being pressed. “You felt it the same as I did. Don’t stand there and pretend this is nothing.”

His nostrils flared. For a second his control slipped and I saw the gold in his eyes burn brighter. Then he locked it down again.

“This is finished,” he said, louder, addressing the pack as much as me. “There will be no further discussion. Clara is not pack. She will never be under my authority as a mate.”

The finality in his voice made my stomach twist. I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to demand he look at me properly, not like I was some inconvenience he needed to clear off his list. Instead I laughed once, short and sharp.

“You’re a coward,” I said. “Whatever reason you’ve got, you’re too gutless to say it to my face without an audience.”

A few wolves muttered. Maya tried to pull me back. I shook her off.

Kael’s expression hardened. “Watch your tongue.”

“Or what? You’ll reject me harder?” I spread my arms. “Go ahead. Do it again. Make sure everyone hears. Make sure they all know the great Alpha Kael couldn’t even handle a simple mate bond without turning it into a public spectacle.”

His hands clenched at his sides. I saw the white of his knuckles. Good. Let him feel something for once.

“Leave,” he said, voice dropping low enough that only those closest could catch it. “Now. Before I make you.”

The threat should have scared me. It didn’t. It just lit something colder and angrier in my chest.

I stared at him for a long moment, memorizing the exact line of his mouth, the way he refused to look away even while he was cutting me loose in front of everyone who’d ever mattered.

Then I turned.

Maya was right there, face pale, eyes wide. She opened her mouth like she wanted to say something comforting. I shook my head once.

“I’m fine,” I told her. It was a lie and we both knew it, but she nodded anyway.

I walked through the crowd without looking at anyone. The fairy lights blurred. Someone called my name, soft, pitying.

I kept going until the trees closed in and the noise of the party faded behind me. Only then did I let my shoulders drop.

The bond still sat in my chest like a live coal, burning and wrong.

Rejection wasn’t supposed to feel this sharp. Everyone said it faded. Everyone said you could survive it.

I pressed a hand hard against my sternum and kept walking, boots crunching on dry leaves, until the pack house lights disappeared completely.

Behind me, the music started up again.
