Chapter 71

***Evangeline point of view***

"Come," Silas said, holding out his hand to me. "There's something you need to see."

I stared at his fingers. Silver light danced between them. Ever since yesterday's training, everything looked different. Colors were brighter. Sounds were louder. Even my own heartbeat seemed to echo in my chest.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"To where it all began," he said. "To where your blood first learned to rule the shadows."

I took his hand. The familiar rush swept over us. The castle walls turned to mist. We fell through darkness until our feet hit solid ground.

When the world came back, I gasped.

Ruins stretched as far as I could see. Massive stone pillars rose from the earth like giant fingers. Their surfaces were covered in symbols that hurt my eyes to look at. Broken arches hung in the air without support. They were held up by magic so old I could taste it on my tongue.

"What is this place?" I whispered.

"The First Temple," Silas said. His voice w

  • THE ALPHA WHO HATED ME   Chapter 76

Chapter 76***Celeste**The old cemetery smelled of death and decay.I stood among the broken headstones, my heart hammering against my ribs. The moon was hidden behind thick clouds, and the only light came from the single candle Elder Morrison held in his weathered hands."She should be here soon," he murmured, his eyes scanning the shadows between the ancient graves.I clutched Evangeline's locket tighter in my palm. The silver was warm from my grip, and I could feel my pulse beating against the metal. This had to work. It had to."Are you certain about this?" I whispered.Morrison's laugh was dry as autumn leaves. "Certain? Child, nothing about dark magic is certain. But if anyone can help you, it's her."A wind picked up, rattling the dead branches overhead. The candle flame flickered but didn't die. And then, from the mist that seemed to rise from nowhere, she appeared. The black witch looked nothing like I'd expected. She wasn't old and twisted like the stories said. Instead, sh

  • THE ALPHA WHO HATED ME   Chapter 75

Chapter 75***Evangeline point of view***The testing chamber was silent except for my breathing.I stood in the center of the circle, my hands still glowing with shadow magic. Around me lay the evidence of what I had done. What I had become.Five shadow wolves, each bigger than a horse, all kneeling before me. Their purple eyes blazed with respect and fear. One of them.... the largest.... had a fresh scar across his muzzle where my magic had cut him. He didn't whimper. He didn't move. He just waited for my next command. The Shadow Council watched from their thrones, their faces unreadable. Lady Nyx sat forward, her silver eyes studying me like I was a puzzle she couldn't solve."Impressive," she said finally. "Very impressive."I didn't feel impressive. I felt empty. Hollow. Like something inside me had died during the test, and I wasn't sure what had taken its place. The test had been simple in theory. Control five alpha shadow wolves. Make them submit completely. Prove I could comm

  • THE ALPHA WHO HATED ME   Chapter 74

Chapter 74***Celeste point of view**I slammed the door to my bedroom so hard the pictures on the wall fell to the floor. Glass broke across the marble tiles, but I didn't care. Nothing mattered except the burning rage in my chest.Humiliated. That's what I was. Humiliated in front of the entire pack. Rejected like I was nothing. Like I meant nothing.I grabbed the nearest thing, a crystal vase filled with white roses and threw it against the wall. It exploded in water and broken glass, but it wasn't enough. Nothing would be enough to ease the fire eating me alive from the inside."How dare he?" I screamed at my empty room. "How dare he choose her over me?"Her. That pathetic excuse for a wolf. That weak little nobody who had somehow stolen everything that belonged to me.I walked to my mirror, staring at my face. Perfect blonde hair. Flawless skin. Eyes like sapphires. I was everything a Luna should be. Everything the pack needed. Everything Ronan should have wanted. But instead, h

  • THE ALPHA WHO HATED ME   Chapter 73

Chapter 73***Ronan point of view***The council chamber felt like a tomb.I sat at the long oak table, staring at the faces around me. My father at the head, his Alpha power filling the room like smoke. My mother beside him, her expression cold as winter stone. Elder Morrison, Elder Blackwood, Elder Kane, all of them watching me like vultures waiting for something to die.And across from me sat Celeste, her hands folded perfectly in her lap, her smile sharp as a blade."The wedding will take place in two weeks," my father announced, his voice cutting through the silence. "The invitations have already been sent. The preparations are underway."Two weeks. The words hit me like a physical blow. I'd known this moment was coming, but hearing it spoken aloud made everything real in a way that left me breathless."So soon?" my mother asked, though her tone suggested she was pleased rather than surprised."The pack needs stability," Elder Morrison said, leaning forward in his chair. "Young R

Chapter 72***Evangeline point of view***The training ground was different from yesterday. Bigger. Darker. The stone walls seemed to pulse with their own heartbeat, and the air tasted of metal and old magic."Today we test your limits," Silas said, walking in slow circles around me. "Yesterday you touched your power. Today you learn to use it."I stood in the center of the circle he'd drawn in silver chalk. My hands shook slightly. Ever since the throne room, something inside me felt different. Hungrier. Like a wild animal that had been sleeping too long."I don't want to hurt anyone," I said.Silas stopped walking. His silver eyes met mine. "Hurt? You think power is about hurting people?""Isn't it?" I asked. "All those memories you showed me. The Shadow Queen. She hurt everyone.""She protected what mattered." Silas moved closer. "Just like you will learn to do."Before I could ask what he meant, the doors to the training ground opened. Three shadow wolves padded into the room. The
