LOGINEverett's POV.
The night of the mating ceremony finally arrived. I stood in my room, staring at myself in the mirror.
My reflection, weighing over two hundred and fifty pounds, stared back at me.
“Miss, the zipper won't close. Suck your stomach in” The maid snapped me out of my thoughts and I pressed, sucking in air for seconds.
She groaned as she dragged the zipper up until it worked.
“Thank you,” I muttered.
Downstairs, my parents were with Lissa. I watched as Mom helped her with her dress, smiling like she was the best thing that had ever happened to her.
“You need to look extremely good, sweetheart. You will definitely make us proud”
I walked down the stairs, careful not to trip over my dress. The moment I reached the bottom of the stairs, Mom turned, her eyes scanning me with disgust.
She didn't compliment me, Dad said nothing either. In fact, I heard Lissa laugh.
“I'll wait in the car” I headed outside.
I had barely reached for the door when Mom's voice rang across the room.
“No,” she said sharply. “You should walk. Burn some calories or something. You need to keep fit for the ceremony”
The moment Mom spoke, my eyes flicked to Dad, searching for something I knew I wouldn't find; disapproval.
He didn't care. His face was expressionless, maybe he supported it too.
I didn't argue. “Alright”
Mom looked surprised but before she could ask questions, I walked out of the house and walked towards the pack grounds where the ceremony was being held.
I was already halfway through the road when the ringtone of my phone filled the air. Celine's name flashed across the screen, making my lips spread with a smile.
“Hey, bestie.” I called. “How is your Mom?”
Celine huffed. “Much better. I'm sorry I can't make it”
I smiled. “No, it's fine”
She had called earlier in the morning and had told me her mother had fallen into an emergency and she had been with her in the hospital, but thankfully, she had been stabilized.
“Keep your chin up!” Celine sounded stern. “And be yourself over there!”
“Yes ma'am” I replied with the same energy and the call ended.
Moments later, I arrived at the pack grounds. It was crowded with people from all corners of the pack. Mated wolves, unmated, parents, and even well-wishers.
Every corner was filled with young girls with their parents by their side and the hurt settled deep in my chest, I was alone.
Music filled the atmosphere with a kind of calmness I couldn't explain. The sour mood which had been caused by my family suddenly disappeared, replaced by the determination to enjoy this celebration.
My eyes scanned the room. I looked everywhere for Cassian, but couldn't find him.
“He'd soon be here” I said to myself.
When my gaze returned to the entrance, my family arrived. Mom and Dad stood beside Lissa who looked elegantly dressed, hair packed in a bun, face glowing under the evening lights.
My sister was everything I wasn't. Cherished by our parents, beautiful and elegant with a slim figure, adored by the whole pack, and praised for every little deed.
They stood opposite where I was standing and for a moment, I just looked around.
Suddenly, someone's voice rose.
“It's starting! The full moon is finally coming out!” He said.
My whole body shook with excitement.
It's time. The time everyone had been waiting for, the time when mates would find each other, claim each other and fill the whole air with their romantic howls.
I stared at the moon, waiting for the signs, for my wolf to finally sense our mate. From the corner of my eyes, I could see people going around hugging each other, their wolves squealing happily.
Minutes passed, and that was when the unease set in. A strong scent filled my nose, and my wolf stirred excitedly inside me.
Mate.
Across the room, my gaze fell on Cassian. My breath hitched. I felt the connection instantly.
He's my mate. It was hard to believe, but this was definitely an answered prayer.
Cassian walked to me and my breath hitched. A smile spread on my lips and I waited eagerly for him to reach me.
He did, but there was no smile on his face, no excitement that matched mine.
“You are my mate, Cassian,” I said in a broken, excited voice.
The room suddenly fell silent, the music stopped. The Alpha heir was choosing his mate, of course, it should.
“I can't accept you as my mate” Cassian shook his head, face laced with disgust.
I stood frozen. No, he didn't mean that.
“Cassian…..” I called.
“You can't expect me to get tied up to a bloated cow like you, Everett. That's way beneath me”
His words sank in deep and my knees buckled. A bloated cow?
When someone called me that, he almost punched them in the face and now?
“A real Luna will have to sit beside me when I become Alpha. Not someone like you”
His words pierced deeper than a blade. Reality crashed on me hard.
For a moment, I thought about all the times we had spent together and how he had always defended me.
“You like me, Cassian,” I said without thinking.
Cassian laughed before the whole pack's laughter followed. My cheeks flushed red from the humiliation and I stood frozen in disbelief.
“Stop being delusional. You took my pity for liking a fatty like you?”
Air rushed to my lungs. I muttered devastatingly. “Pity?”
Cassian didn't respond. He straightened his posture and looked me in the eye.
“I, Cassian Harrington rejects you, Everett Meadow, as my mate”
A searing pain shot across my chest, burning like fire. My knees gave out completely and I fell to the floor, hands clutching my chest. Tears stung my eyes as the realization crashed down on me.
Cassian rejected me. He wants the bond severed.
The only wish I'd ever made to the moon goddess had turned out like this, what more could possibly go wrong?
Sebastian’s pov.The moment we arrived at the packhouse, Blake stepped outside to receive us. “Were you able to find anything, Alpha?” he asked. I glanced at him without giving him a response. I didn’t know whether he was with that pack or not, hence, I couldn’t tell him about what we had found. I walked past him. “Dante will handle the investigation. You don’t need to get involved” My voice was firm, commanding. My gaze snapped to the side, enough to see him bow slightly. “Yes, alpha” I walked towards my chamber but was forced to stop when his voice rose again. “The council members are in the Eastern hall, alpha. They request an audience with you” A deep sigh left my lips. I would have ordered for them to be dismissed but sooner or later, we would eventually have that conversation they were trying to engage me in. I headed east instead. Dante followed behind me. In the hall, the council members were already seated around the table. I took my seat and Dante did the same. “Alp
Chapter 7Sebastian's pov. “Alpha, you still haven't recovered” Dante, my beta said, face laced with worry. He had rushed over from an assignment he had been handling after hearing what had happened. I stood in front of the mirror, face grim, hand adjusting my shirt. “I need to find out who tried to kill me before they get the chance to erase their traces.” I turned towards the door and he followed closely behind me. “You know now is not the time to play sick in bed” He became silent for a brief moment before he nodded. “I will go with you” “Definitely. Bring two warriors with you, have Blake look over the pack until I return” I paused on my tracks, turning to look at Dante. His face was drained of color, brows creased together in confusion. I knew what he was thinking. Blake was my gamma but he wasn't trustworthy. Dante and I both know that, and that was enough reason for me not to leave the entire pack in his custody. “I know,” I said before he could speak. “Just let him t
Everett's POV. I was still reeling in shock, face still snapped to the side. My eyes blinked and I forced my burning face to return to the head maid. Miranda was breathing hard, and she looked really angry. “You dared touch the Alpha?” She asked, a small laugh escaping her lips. “You tend to be so bold, aren't you?” I couldn't bring myself to speak. The corner of my eyes caught Sebastian standing up slowly from the bed, and he groaned slightly. “You just crossed a line, servant. You shouldn't have touched the alpha with your filthy bloated hand” she paused to catch her breath. “You aren't supposed to be allowed near him, but you had the luxury, yet you had the stupid audacity to touch him” Her words made a knot form in my stomach. She looked so enraged one would think there's something between her and the alpha but I doubted that. My chest was beating fast now, and even though I hadn't doubted this much when the physician was here, I was beginning to think I truly shouldn't h
“Wake up, already. It's time to work!” Heavy pounding on my door woke me up from sleep. I jumped up from the mattress and looked around in confusion. The memory from the previous day crashed into me in an instant. I was in another pack, here as a servant. I stood up and walked outside. Miranda was standing, eyes darkened. “Get to the main compound. You start by cleaning the floors” she spat coldly. “Now, follow me.” I obeyed.I walked behind her until we got to the compound. The cleaning tools were already on the ground; Clean water in a stainless bowl, and a piece of cloth laid at the edge. I crouched down without a single complaint, dipped the cloth into the water, and cleaned. By the time I lifted my gaze, Miranda was long gone. Instead, maids had surrounded me, doing their jobs. But I could see their eyes on me, and I could hear their whispers from where I was. “I heard she's an alpha daughter,” someone said. Another laughed. “And she's scrubbing floors in another Alpha'
Everett's POV. I asked Dad if he was joking but the look on his face said he wasn't. Panic washer over me. “Where am I supposed to go?” Dad turned, his face cold and remorseless. “I owe a debt to Alpha Sebastian. Since I'm unable to pay, he demanded a year of labor and you'll pay for that” I stared at him in shock, refusing to believe his words. There's no way my father is trading me to settle his debt. Not just any pack, but the dangerous Dothan pack?“No!” I said sharply. “I'm your daughter, you can't just send me away like this!” Before Dad could reply, Mom stepped closer, resting a hand on my shoulder. “Everett dear,” she said. “Your sister is the pride of the family right now, you've caused us enough embarrassment and we don't want you causing more. So be useful for once.”“Yes,” Dad spoke again. “After the disgrace you've caused me today, you should be grateful I found a way for you to be useful” My jaw dropped at how my family was treating me. The realization hit me in
Everett's POV. My hands trembled by my side as I stared back into Cassian's face. The words felt heavy on my lips but I said it anyway. “I, Everett Meadow, accept the rejection” Cassian's face went hard. For a moment, he clutched his chest while pain flashed across his face. He straightened his back seconds later, his gaze sweeping over me in disgust before he turned. Tears streamed down my face and I swallowed hard to keep myself from breaking completely. The room was still silent when I heard Cassian's voice across where I was standing. “Lissa….” He called. My head snapped. He was kneeling in front of my sister, holding a ring in his hands. My eyes widened in shock. “I've always known you were the one. I've always wanted you to be mine.” He paused. “Will you be my mate and Luna, Lissa Meadow?” My jaw dropped. Lissa’s face lit up with delight and she squealed. “Finally!” She held out her hand like she had been expecting this. Behind her, Mom and Dad held themselves and sm
