CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

LILY’S POV

The sound of glass shattering stayed with me long after the impact had been made.

It clung to my ears, sharp and unforgiving, like a warning I couldn’t shake off.

Neither of us touched it anymore, but it felt like a third presence in the room watching, waiting.

“This is just the beginning… two can play this game and I am a better player.”

My fingers dug into my sleeves.

“Who do you think did it?” I asked quietly, breaking the silence.

I had my suspicions but I didn't want to dwell on it because I could be wrong.

Ethan stood near the window, his back to me with his shoulders rigid.

He looked unsettled and looked like a man holding himself together by sheer force.

“I don’t know,” he said after a long pause.

“But they wanted us unsettled.”

I swallowed.

“They clearly succeeded.”

He turned to look at me then.

His eyes softened when they met mine, and for a moment, the anger slipped away.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, Lily,” he said firmly.
