Nothing happened.

A sigh of relief slipped past Ren's lips, shaky and thin, and he opened his eyes again—only to gasp softly. The sight before him stole the rest of his breath.

The soldier's footsteps approached behind him, but Ren barely noticed. His gaze was locked on the impossible reality that spread out before him.

The Faction.

The tarred grounds stretched endlessly, vast and merciless. Colossal buildings towered in every direction, some stabbing higher than the outer walls, others crouched low and watchful. They looked less like structures and more like beasts forged of stone and steel.

At the center stood a singular building, unlike the rest. Its surface shimmered as if made of liquid silver, reflecting the storm-stained skies above. It seemed alive, a silent sentinel that pulsed with power. Arrayed before it were lines of military vehicles, armored and sharp-edged, gleaming beneath the cold light.

And above it all, the sentinel beam blinked steadily—the same light he'd seen from the desert, watching, marking, warning.

Ren's throat tightened. Now he understood. This was why Axton Conan was the strongest, the most formidable leader alive. To gather such technology in a dying world required a grip of iron and a mind sharper than the blade of survival itself.

Where the rest of the world clawed at scraps, drowning in disease and ruin, Faction Twelve had carved out a future.

And in that moment, Ren knew—Commander Reed's dream of overthrowing Axton was nothing but smoke in the wind. Reed could never breach this place.

A sound behind him tugged him back. He turned just as the soldier approached with a sheet of paper in his hand.

"You will wait, Mira. The result will be ready—"

The soldier didn't finish.

A synthesized voice cut through the air, cold and absolute.

"Scanning result completed. Name: Renault Caspian. Age: twenty-five. Sex: male. Status: Unaffected."

The words hit like a bullet.

In the blink of an eye, Ren was shoved to his knees, his body colliding with the rough ground. Cold steel pressed against his skull. Guns. Dozens of them.

"No… no, no, no!" His thoughts screamed as his heart hammered faster than the chorus of cocking triggers. This can't be happening. I must be dreaming.

His knees ground painfully against the pavement. His teeth tore into his bottom lip, metallic tang already filling his mouth.

What just happened?

The mission—over. Exposed before he even began.

He'd been scanned. Betrayed by Axton's technology, something beyond anything he'd imagined.

Mira… I failed you. My death is certain. His fists clenched, his chest burning as if grief alone would crush him.

A soldier stepped forward, blocking Ren's view, but then moved aside with deliberate weight. The one who had been leading him all along stepped in, eyes unreadable.

"Renault Caspian," the soldier said flatly. "I hope you are ready to face the Captain."

He snapped his fingers.

Two soldiers yanked Ren up, their grips cruel and unrelenting. They dragged him across the blackened ground, through the looming doors of the silver building.

The contrast was jarring. Inside, the air was clean, almost too clean, cool and purified as though the very particles had been scrubbed of imperfection. The floors gleamed, polished to a sheen, the walls sterile and sharp. Ren barely had time to register any of it before his shoulder slammed against the narrow frame of a side door.

He groaned but could do nothing. His body was an empty husk dragged along by force.

Darkness swallowed him whole as they pulled him deeper.

A light blazed suddenly overhead, stabbing his vision. Ren blinked furiously until the shapes resolved.

A conference room. Enormous, rectangular. Its walls were glass, revealing the endless black sky beyond. At its center stretched a long table, also glass, catching the sterile glare and bouncing it back into his eyes. The floor beneath him was black tile, polished to the point that his own dirty, broken reflection stared back at him.

Hands forced him down. His knees slammed into the hard floor. His arms twisted painfully behind his back, pinned by strength he couldn't match.

"Ugh!" His grunt burst out as sharp pain followed—a hand striking across his face.

The blow cracked his vision sideways. His ears rang, the metallic sting of blood filling his mouth as his cheek smashed against his teeth.

"You dare to march in here as a spy?" a voice thundered above him.

They wrenched Ren's chin upward, forcing his gaze to meet the speaker.

Through blurred sight, Ren saw him: tall, broad-shouldered, wrapped in a navy uniform heavy with rank. His face was lined, creased by years of command, and his brown eyes burned with such venom that Ren flinched instinctively. The man's glare cut deeper than the slap.

Was this Axton?

Ren's lips cracked as he tried to speak. "I… please. Just let me go. I'm no threat, I pro—"

"Captain!"

The man who had struck him halted, stepping back instantly. He bowed his head.

And the others followed.

The hands holding Ren dropped him like discarded trash. His body hit the cold floor once more.

Ren's blood ran cold. If this wasn't Axton… then who stood at the door?

Terror curled inside him like a living thing. The real Captain was worse—far worse.

Silence swallowed the room whole as footsteps echoed in.

Slow. Unhurried. Heavy with authority.

Every soldier stiffened, their bodies locked in statuesque stillness. Even the air felt like it held its breath.

Ren pressed his face against the smooth floor, unwilling, unable to lift his head. His narrowed gaze clung to the only thing he could see—shiny, black boots stepping closer. Each step reverberated through his skull, through his chest, until his very bones ached with it.

He was about to face him.

Captain Axton Conan.

The man whispered about in every desert camp. The man whose shadow silenced entire cities, whose name was enough to make Beast-bounds scatter. Death incarnate.

And Ren knew, beyond all doubt—he was the enemy.

"Lift him," came the order.

The voice…

Ren shivered violently.

Low. Calm. Cold.

Not raised, not harsh. But in that stillness was something more terrifying than fury. The promise of execution. The inevitability of command.

Hands seized him again, dragging him upright, forcing him to meet his fate.

And there he was.

Captain Axton Conan.

Ren's breath snagged in his throat. The air itself grew too heavy to swallow. His limbs trembled, useless beneath him. He nearly lost control of himself as those eyes—sharp, silver, unyielding—locked onto him.

Silver. Not gray. Not pale. Silver, like forged metal. Unnatural, piercing, merciless.

White hair, cut neat and cruelly precise, gleamed against the midnight of his uniform. His jaw was sharp enough to wound, his expression carved from stone. He stood impossibly tall, so tall that Ren's head, even upright, would barely reach his chest.

Every inch of him radiated power.

Every inch of him whispered death.

There could be no mistake.

This was Axton Conan.

"Undress him," the Captain commanded, his voice calm as still water.

His silver gaze never wavered, never shifted, locked on Ren like a predator pinning prey.

He was relieved because he was safe from contracting the virus, but now he's proven never to be able to be Beast-bound. Also, he feared for his future.'What happens next?' Was he now about to get dissected and shared? Axton slowly took his hand away from Ren and slowly swerved the chair around to stare at Ren's face. For the very first time, a faint, almost dismissible smirk curved up Axton's lips. He ghosted his hand over Ren's face, his eyes piercing right into Ren's soul, "You're valuable, after all." He murmured lowly, his fingertips pressing lightly over Ren's good cheek. Corvin cleared his throat, "Captain," He called slowly. Axton once again found himself pulled out of that strong pull. He stepped back and faced Corvin, "Why was he attacked?" He asked directly, his brows raising. Corvin frowned, "Um, I wasn't there, Captain. I was hoping you'd be more interested in immed

Kael looked at Ren and hardened his face, "An experiment, Captain." He answered."Where does he belong?" Axton questioned, his voice cold."The lab, Captain," Kael replied firmly. "Where did you bring him?" Axton stepped closer, a challenge in his eyes.Kael slightly lowered his head, "I'm sorry, Captain. I shouldn't have brought him to the combat field." He apologised."A specimen is not to hurt. You hurt him, out of your carelessness. Rhys?" Axton called, locking his hard gaze on Kael's face."Yes, Captain," Rhys was beside him in a second."The Sergeant has merited a public reprimand for breaking formation. He will be on extra duty for the next twenty-four hours... no food, no water, no breaks," Axton passed his dehumanising punishment. "Yes, Captain," Rhys saluted and turned to Kael.Axton turned to Ren, "On your feet, Renault. Follow me." He ordered and walked away. The soldiers once again cleared the way as Axton moved, no one saying a word for fear of getting punished as well

Ren chilled the moment he heard the familiar growl. The foul smell permeated the air, irritating Ren's nostrils and lungs.A Beast-bound.He heard the sound of metal wheels rolling over the tarred grounds, and slowly, he lifted his head toward the direction of the sound. A soldier was pushing a tall cart-like cage covered with a thick, black cloth. Ren knew that the Beast-bound creature was right behind that dark cloth. The low growling was a quick giveaway. As the soldier pushed the cage closer, Ren instinctively stepped out of the way only for him to freeze when he realised that he had moved right into the captain's front; he could feel his foot stepping on Axton's neatly polished shoe.'Oh, God, could this get anymore worse?' He thought with dread.Very slowly, he moved himself away from Axton's front and raised his head to look at his face, expecting the deadly, chilling look that would probably make him pee his pants, but, he saw none.Axton wasn't even looking his way, as if h

Ren found himself smiling, "Yes, Captain." He teased.Kael scoffed, "Please, I'm nothing like that meanie. Let's go." He said and turned away.Ren followed closely as they approached Stanley standing on an elevated block, taking out spears from a square metal box."Thank you, Stanley," Kael said as he took the spear from Stanley, twirling it easily around his fingers.Ren saw Stanley's displeased face, but he tried his best to hide it behind a polite nod."Here's your spear, Ren," Stanley extended one of the resonca spears to Ren.Ren stared apprehensively at the smooth, silver metal. He recalled how Kael explained the weapon's mechanism. With just the wrong move, he might just send the wrong energy to the spears, and it would resonate and pierce his foot. "Ren?" Stanley called, agitated.Ren blinked and slowly took the spear from him, "Oh..." he gasped as he was almost pulled down by the weight of the darned thing. It weighed like a 60-pound barbell. He immediately held it with both

Kael nodded and proceeded to lead them into the double sliding door beside them.Ren squinted his eyes to focus on the foggy room, and he realised he'd been led into the general bathroom."Here's your locker," Kael led Ren to a locker and opened it for him."There's a towel, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. You'll also find another pair of clothes in there. Find a free bathroom and hurry. My room is 200," Kael hurried to explain and disappeared into the fog.His head felt as foggy as the humid room. Does every second in the Faction have to be hurried? Can't they do things like normal people do?He sighed and reached inside the locker. He grabbed his things and, closing it, turned to leave and bumped into someone... again."Shit," Ren muttered and held his nose as he had collided his nose with what seemed to be a person's chest."Are you alright?" A hand steadied Ren from falling.Ren slowly raised his head and peered through the fog to focus on the person's face. Immediately, Ren moved

Axton thought back to the time in his office when he had touched Ren and felt that strong humming sensation in his head. Feeling the hum could have been easily dismissed, but, what confused him was that gentle string that pulled him toward Ren.Axton was a man of control, he had never encountered anyone or anything that stripped him of it. But, Ren was easily doing so and he hated it, hated Ren.Ren was a threat; making him almost break his character in front of Corvin. He wondered what he would have done if Corvin hadn't intervened. He should keep Ren away from himself, he wouldn't want anyone to realise that his captive had some sort of strange effect on him. He didn't know what it meant, and he wasn't interested in finding out.On the screen, he watched Ren sleeping quietly. Ren had used his hands to form a pillow beneath his head, his lips parted very slightly. Axton stared, his gaze long and hard.He couldn't even understand why he was watching the hidden camera in Ren's room,
