"Rosa."

Damian's voice cut through the apartment before I'd even processed what I was looking at.

"Rosa, get in here."

She appeared in the kitchen doorway a moment later, dish towel still in hand, and stopped the second she saw the folder open on the counter.

Her face didn't do anything dramatic.

It just went still, the particular stillness of someone who'd been waiting years for this exact conversation to happen.

Whatever composure she'd worn for the last two weeks... the easy warmth, the careful blankness outside the locked door... dropped away in real time, and what was underneath looked a lot older and a lot more tired than the woman I thought I knew.

"You knew," I said. "This whole time. You knew my father's name before I ever said it out loud in this kitchen."

"I didn't know your name was Calloway until you moved in."

Her voice was quiet, steady, none of the careful blankness she'd worn outside the locked room.

"I knew the fire. I was there, Mira. Before either of you were born."

Damian set the photograph down between them.

"You worked for my father."

"I was his assistant for six years. Before Cole Industries was what it is now, back when it was still small enough that everyone knew everyone's business."

Rosa's hands twisted the dish towel, the first nervous gesture I'd seen from her.

"I organized his calendar. I knew where he was every hour of every day. Including the night of the fire."

"Where was he?"

"At the plant. Officially, doing a routine investor walkthrough."

She looked at Damian, not me, like this part was harder to say to his face than mine.

"Unofficially, arguing with your grandfather about safety costs he wanted cut. I typed the memo myself. I know exactly what corners got approved that week... which valves, which inspections got pushed back a quarter to save money nobody in that boardroom actually needed."

The room went very quiet.

"Then you know what killed my father," I said.

"I know what the official report said. I also know I was told, very clearly, the week after the fire, that if I ever repeated what I'd typed, I would lose more than my job."

Her eyes finally came up to meet mine, and there was something raw in them I hadn't expected.

"I've worked for this family for over twenty years, Mira. Not because I forgot. Because staying close was the only way I ever found to make sure nothing like that happened again."

"That's not protection. That's silence with better furniture."

Rosa didn't flinch from that.

Something almost like relief crossed her face, the particular relief of someone finally hearing their own choices named out loud by someone else.

"You're not wrong. I've told myself otherwise for two decades. It's easier to call it loyalty than to call it what it actually was."

Damian's jaw was tight, his eyes fixed on Rosa like he was seeing her for the first time after years of walking past her in this kitchen.

"Why show up in my father's file at all? If you left the company after the fire..."

"I didn't leave."

Rosa set the towel down, finally, as she'd run out of reasons to keep her hands busy.

"Your father kept me on. Quietly. Different title, same building, until he passed and you inherited the household staff along with everything else."

She looked at Damian.

"I've been three floors below your office for six years, Damian, and you never once asked why a housekeeper had handwriting that matched the memos in your own archive."

I felt the floor shift under that admission in a way the fire itself hadn't managed.

Not just present at the tragedy.

Kept close afterward, deliberately, by the man responsible for it...

Moved from boardroom to laundry room, but never let out of reach.

"Who threatened you?" I said. "Twenty years ago. Who told you to stay quiet?"

Rosa opened her mouth to answer...

And the intercom by the front door buzzed, sharp and sudden, cutting through the kitchen like a blade.

Damian's eyes flicked toward the sound, then back to Rosa.

"Nobody's expected tonight."

The buzzer sounded again, longer this time, someone downstairs holding the button like they didn't intend to let go of it.

Then a third time, insistent, almost angry, the kind of pressing that meant whoever was down there had already decided they weren't leaving without an answer.

Rosa went pale in a way I hadn't seen from her yet...

Not careful.

Not composed.

Afraid.

Her eyes darted toward the hallway, toward the locked room at the end of it, as some old instinct had just been triggered awake.

"Don't answer that," she said.

"Don't answer that," Rosa said again, but Damian was already moving."Stay behind me," he said, and it wasn't a request. His hand found my wrist for half a second, steering me back from the door, and then let go like he'd caught himself doing something he hadn't meant to do out loud.I noticed the hesitation more than the grip itself... the way he pulled back a fraction too quickly, like touching me was a door he'd decided to keep closed even now.Two weeks ago, I would have found that unsettling.Tonight, standing this close to whatever was on the other side of that buzzer, it felt like the opposite.Like he'd trusted his own hands more than his own words. He checked the security panel instead of buzzing anyone up.The screen showed a man in a dark coat standing in the lobby, unfamiliar, calm in a way that felt deliberate rather than natural. He wasn't looking at the camera. He was looking at the elevator, like he already knew which floor he was headed to."Do you recognize him?" He was home before seven, which told me almost as much as his face did the second he saw what I was holding.I'd laid the article on the kitchen counter, face-up, the photograph of the fire and his father's name sitting where he couldn't avoid it.He stopped in the doorway, keys still in hand, and for a long moment, he didn't move at all... just looked at the page like it was something that might detonate if he got too close. The city lights had come on behind him through the windows, and for once, the silence between us didn't feel like the calculated kind.It felt like the sound of a man realizing he'd run out of ways to delay something."Where did you get that?" he said. Not a question.A demand, quiet and controlled, the same voice from his office the day I signed the contract."The library. Public record, Damian."I kept my voice steady, even though everything underneath it wasn't."You didn't have to hide it from me. You just had to not offer it, and apparently that was easier f

Damian was gone before I woke up.Not gone-gone... his study door was shut, a note from Rosa on the kitchen counter saying he'd left early for back-to-back board calls about the gala fallout... but gone in the way that told me exactly how much he wanted to avoid finishing last night's conversation.I stood in the kitchen holding a cup of coffee I didn't really want, staring at his closed study door, and made a decision that had been building since the moment security walked Sophia out of that ballroom.Rosa found me there twenty minutes later, still standing in the same spot, and gave me a look that suggested she already knew exactly what kind of night it had been."He does that," she said without being asked. "Disappears into work when things get complicated at home. Started long before you got here.""Is that supposed to make me feel better?""It's supposed to tell you it's not about you."She refilled my coffee without asking if I wanted more."For what it's worth, dear, he came ou

The press was waiting before we even reached the doors."Mira! Did you know about Sophia before tonight?""Mr. Cole, is it true the board is investigating the terms of your engagement?""Mira, over here... how does it feel to be the third one?"Flashbulbs went off in a wall of white, so many at once that, for a second, I couldn't see anything past the afterimages burned into my vision.Someone shoved a microphone close enough that I felt the wind of it against my cheek.I kept my eyes forward the way Genevieve had drilled into me, chin level, spine straight, even though every instinct underneath the performance wanted to run.Damian's hand found the small of my back again, firmer this time, steering rather than reassuring, and I understood the difference the second his fingers pressed harder than they needed to.Get through this. Don't stop moving. He didn't say a word to any of them, just walked us both through the gauntlet of raised phones and shouted names until the car door shut b

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S APPRENTICE BRIDE    Chapter 6: The Whitmore Gala

"Sophia," Damian had said two days ago, as the name cost him something to hand over. He hadn't said anything else about her since, and I hadn't pushed... not because I'd stopped wanting to know, but because I'd learned by now that pushing only ever bought me silence dressed up as an answer.Tonight, I had a different plan.I was done waiting for a stranger's texts to hand me the story one fragment at a time. If there were answers in this world, I was going to find them myself. The Whitmore ballroom looked exactly like Genevieve had described it: chandeliers, marble, a string quartet playing something that sounded expensive. The car had barely stopped moving before the flashes started, a wall of light through the tinted glass that made my pulse spike despite four days of practice standing still for exactly this.Damian's hand found mine before the door even opened."Chin level," he said quietly. "Not for them. For me.""That's not what Genevieve told me.""Genevieve's not the one who h
