I woke up to the sound of monitors beeping, and a sharp pain shot across my abdomen. Stirring slightly, I tried to lift my hands…

“Oh my God… he’s awake.”

I heard a voice—familiar, yet it took me a moment to register. Slowly, I placed it. It was Isabella.

I wanted to speak, but I couldn’t. My mouth felt heavy, like it was weighed down. I groaned slightly, still trying to process what was happening.

Then it all came rushing back—the fake DNA result, Elena, the gunshot. She had been in danger. If I hadn’t stepped in to take the bullet, she would have been hit. That explained the monitors, the pain, everything. I was in a hospital. I had survived the gunshot. Thank goodness!.

I tried to speak again, but my mouth was still too heavy. I struggled to open my eyes against the bright lights in the room, only to shut them immediately.
